Traditional Chiefs Storm Badagry Market To Force Down Prices by Morbeta11(m): 4:46pm On Sep 08
Traditional chiefs in Badagry on Saturday stormed Agbalata Market to enforce a directive by the Badagry to force down prices of foodstuffs and goods.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Traditional Ruler of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi 1, on Aug. 28, dissolved market committees dictating the prices of foodstuffs and goods in Agbalata International Market, Badagry.

The Akran made the announcement at a meeting with Agbalata market men and women at his palace in Badagry.

The Akran, who was represented by Chief Michael Onu-Osekan, the Jengen of Badagry, said no committee should set the price of foodstuffs and goods brought to the market by sellers any longer.

Onu-Osekan sent town criers to assemble the traders at four different venues in the local government to address them.

He said the chiefs had come on instructions of the Akran in reference to the meeting he held at his palace.

“We have come to disseminate information round the market and see if the instructions issued to marketers are being followed.

“We heard that some marketers are not willing to pay waste, security and other fees, due to the instructions from the palace.

“The message is that they should not make things harder for our fellow people of the community, they should not over charge people with the aim of gaining too much,” he said.

Similarly, Chief Anthony Oloyede, the Efiyentan of Badagry Kingdom, said they were in the market to ensure marketers regulate the price of foodstuffs according to the Akran’s directives.

Oloyede said: “Shortly after the directives on dissolution of market committees and reduction of prices of foodstuffs, we heard that some traders are adamant and even refused to pay their normal market levies.

“The levies include security and waste fees which they used to pay monthly to ensure that the market is cleaned.

“This is part of what brought us here, Akran urges them to pay their monthly dues and have human feeling while selling their goods,” he said.

Also, Mr Tunde Hundeyin, representing the Coconut Sellers Association of Agbalata Market, commended the traditional chiefs for coming to address the marketers on high cost of foodstuffs.

Hundeyin, however, urged the traditional chiefs to appeal to government to reduce the pump prices of petrol and diesel.

He said these were a major cause of hike in prices of foodstuff.

Chief Solomon Alabi, the Otun Baba Oja of Agbalata Market, promised that all traders in the market would comply with the directives of the traditional ruler.

Alabi thanked the chiefs for coming to the market to brief the marketers on Akran’s directives.

Maybe they heard there are traders from a certain region selling in the market.

After they are done, they should quickly march to all the major NNPC filling stations and big shopping outlets like shoptite etc in ikorodu and enforce same laws.

But they allowed Tinubu's daughter to be extorting money from the traders.

They should storm NNPC and force them to sell petrol at 450 naira per liter.

After reading the article, the main reason they were there was to collect their own levy.

The cost of clearing a 40ft container of goods is over 15 million, cost of transporting it across Nigeria is over a million. Our over dressed high chiefs should also match to NPA headquarters and make sure these new charges added by tinubu that are responsible for the hyper inflation, are brought down.

Problem is that no one fights for the traders in this country. Rather, every government in power conveniently blames the traders for the net effects of failed government policies. Buhari used to blame the "middle men" too.

You source dollars at over 1600/1usd, pay freight charges chasing 4k usd, pay for warehouses owned by our "accomodators" at wicked prices, clear the goods with 16 million, transport it with over a million and then some worn out chiefs will appear at your business place to instruct you on the approved prices for you to sell! Interesting.

What I understand here is that they went to the market to ensure that everyone is free to bring in his or her products to sell at his /her price instead of the situation where the union people would tell you you must first register before doing business. This union issue is very common in Nigerian markets and the consequence is that they help inflate prices of goods and services Allow everyone to sell at his or her prices

The same handpicked traditional rulers should match, to Aso rock 🪨 and meet Tinubu to bring down the price of fuel, because things weren't expensive like this, it was the day he removed subsidy, that things started getting expensive and out of hand....

Foolish sets of idiots.

When they informed them that the election had consequences, they thought that Tinubu would literally exempt them and the Yoruba race from any woes that would befall the country.

Even GEJ and PMB didn't have an effect in Bayelsa and Katsina, respectively. Politics is more than the eyes can see. It doesn't care about any race, just a heated rush for coins stacking.

What these sets of idiots don't understand is that it's the market that sets its price. You don't impose prices on goods at will. That's only possible in a monopolistic market. And that's why free market and competition is a key to improving the economy.

The more the government tries to impose prices, the more unwilling sellers will want to sell their goods, causing a drop in supply and increasing the prices as a result. Because the price will skyrocket when demand is high, and supply is low - the joy of every seller or producer.

Protest against insecurity. No.
Protest against bad roads. No.
Protest against custom malfeasance and corruption. No.
Protest against unnecessary tax hikes. No.

But this set of mumu traditional chiefs want to regulate the prices of goods. Something that no country on earth has ever done or done but prove to her how stupid they are + further plummet the state of their nation.

There are too many goods in the market to start imposing prices. Millions and millions of goods. It's a futile journey. And a stupid one at that.

Solve the problem of insecurity.
Reduce custom duties to the barest minimum.
Fix bad roads.
Allow the ease of doing business.
Stop printing more money.
Reduce tax fees.
Pay civil servants and pensioners their dues.
Provide stable electricity.

Do this, and the price will drop automatically.

Until then, let's continue to wallow and paddle in the cesspool of bad governance and corruption.

Thanks.
