Nigerians on Monday took to social media to voice their outrage against some members of the Nigeria Police Force, accusing them of exploiting illegal methods like mounting checkpoints and stop-and-search operations to extort travellers during long-distance trips on major highways.

Despite the Force Headquarters’ Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, urging travellers to refuse any payment demands made by officers on major highways, some victims of these operations insisted that the police required a complete overhaul to end the problem.

On Monday, @grandmaster_01 recounted his experience, accusing police officers of extorting motorists and travellers on highways between the Federal Capital Territory and the South-Eastern parts of the country.

“A road trip from Abuja to the SE leaves one in awe of the misdemeanours of your men and officers against motorists.

The extortion is mindless.

“They are reckless in extorting motorists. Our vehicle dropped money at every checkpoint or you risk being parked for a long time,”
@grandmaster-01 wrote.

A serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, using the handle @Kingmanuel700, recounted a similar experience while sharing a receipt of the money allegedly extorted by policemen at Okpella in Edo State.

He lamented that his complaints had been disregarded despite persistent efforts to seek redress.

The victim posted, “Help me tag @Princemoye1. I still got extorted too, because I was a victim even when I showed them my NYSC identification card.”

Describing police extortion on major Nigerian highways as “a cankerworm that has deeply infected the police system,” @PMalarchy accused some officers of assaulting an elderly man for refusing to pay the N100 they had demanded from him.

“One of their men slapped a driver of about 60 years the other day because he (the driver) gave him (the policeman) N100 and was parked when he protested; the policeman slapped the old man,” @PMalarchy wrote.

While corroborating the alleged extortion of policemen on the major highways, @Sethbundle007 claimed the operations on long-distance journeys had become dangerous for motorists.

“I can relate several times since I will not give shishi.

The incidents on our highway with the police look more dangerous now than thieves. I was once told I borrowed my car from a thief and that they will investigate with government guns in their hands; stories can be created,” @Sethbundle007 posted.

Another Nigerian, using the handle @Brodasolar, called on the Force Headquarters to address the behaviour of its personnel, particularly during late hours on the Benin-Asaba Expressway.

@Brodasolar stated, “Baba, most times the delay is just on purpose, especially at night.

The extortion that goes on every day between Benin-Asaba Expressway en, na only God fit help us overcome am, and this is not the case in the north. You need to caution your men.”

In response to some of the accusations on his verified Social media account, Adejobi urged motorists to support the police’s efforts by refusing to give money to any officer on the highways.

He wrote, “We all need to play our role to curb the menace of extortion. This matter has been addressed severally. It’s better to be delayed at their points than to dignify corruption or extortion.

“Play your role and curb the menace. If someone wants to collect money or bribe you for having all your documents, would you pay? If you pay for such, why? It’s a simple thing: don’t dignify any abnormality. The best way to go.”

That distance even long.

From Aba to Umuahia that's barely 30mins, you can meet about 50, including those on OP Mesa or patrols doubling-crossing with Siennas, Minibuses or their regular Black Maria every time. You may get High BP thinking they are hired killers.

9ja Police is the no. 1 bandit organization in the universe.

The Ademumu is saying motorists should stop giving police money.
If an armed robber asks you to handover your phone, will he advise the person not to give the phone to the armed robber?
9ja police are armed robbers.

Re: Nigerians Groan Over Rising Police Extortion, Checkpoints On Highways by Balistic4: 9:22am On Sep 10, 2024
these checkpoints are never really to protect the masses, the guys that posted them there will ask for his own share of the egunje at the end of everyday.

This complaint has been going on for decades and the solution is very simple. Create a body that will checkmate this act, let them constantly dress as a normal motorists and patrol the highway in normal cars and buses, pick up one or two officers everyday from different locations and make example out of them. The ones that refuses the egunje, promote them or give them cash gift. Once this goes on for few months, every other officer will fall in line.

But we know that this is from the rotten head and won't stop grin grin grin grin

2024 Bribes are openly solicited and forcefully obtained from citizens.

Why are we fighting kidnappers, terrorist and other shady characters.

When the law enforcement itself is forcefully collecting bribes and sometimes ransom (if you dont give the bribe, they will hold you hostage till you pay a "fee"wink)

How is this any different from kidnappers, terrorists and human traffickers ?

The bribes are also shared with superior officers, as they bring 'returns' back to them. Sometimes i wonder is the IG of police getting his own cut ? Is that why he has refused to get rid of Bribes ?

Mene, mene, tekel, parsin".

These words are very short but the translation to English will full a sheet.

But Let me just summarize it here.

“The cries of Nigerians have come to God. And God is bringing judgement. Parsin. God is bring people that will deliver Nigerians from the current bondage. “

Tinubu came to power through unpopular schemes and the back door, and he would have used the opportunity to change the dynamics. Make names for himself and gain popularity for himself. But he chooses to make himself the villain.

Effect of the hunger regime by master hunger strategist. grin
Sunday wey go sweet nah 4 Saturday e go show, PBAT policy isn't working at all, and I can tell you that the Nigerian economy has unofficially crashed. Forget the paper talks and stats. Tinubu should lower his ego and reverse his policies then pickup Yaradua's 7 points agenda bcs reinventing the wheel can be costly and end up in regrets, and that is why we are in this mess. Umar Musa Yaradua's 7 points Agenda is enough for Nigeria only if our leaders can think and continue good legacy
Police nah human being too and they are even hungry than most hungry Nigerians. Above all, never argue with a hungry man with gun just show some love & respect and go in peace.

Jst last week Wednesday here, along Ondo road on my way from Lagos, a policeman demanded 20k from a passenger jst because he couldn't speak nd understand English. He's a Togolese nd he is visiting Nigeria for d first tym, nd as expected can only speak French wch d policeman equally doesn't understand.

He showed Olokpa al his papers, including a duly stamped ECOWAS passport, yet our beloved Olokpa stl extorted him for not being able to speak English.. This shows how malfeasted our force is. Imagine d image he has created abt us for a foreigner visiting d first tym.

Not to mention we gave out money @ almost al checking point... Soldiers sef don dy join extort.. This country is finished indeed grin
