Many Nigerian parents do not believe in paying a premium for their children's education. Even those schools that give education cheaply still have to contend with parents who owe. And schools only have an opportunity for cash injection 3 times a year. So what to do |

Flangelo12: Same way no one is forced to apply for the job. Kobojunkieee: Are you asking the proprietor to run a charity? No one is forced to apply and while the salary is depressing, I think we sometimes need to take a back step out of the real world situation and think about it from a Nigeria perspective. |

GboyegaD:Businesses are required by law to pay their employees at least the minimum wage. Any business not able to pay at least that amount violates the law; such a proprietor has no business being in business(hiring anyone, no matter whom). Even Charities are required by law to pay their workers at least the minimum wage. So, let's not get this tangled up where it ought not to be. |

Bluntemperor: I have being listening to a particular program in Nigeria and last week, they discussed back to school and try raise funds for some kids to return back to school. Hearing school fees of N10000, N17000 etc, how much do we expect such schools to pay their teachers? I think the challenge sometimes is we forget to put things in their right perspectives. |

Kobojunkieee: This should be the ideal however, in Nigeria that I know, businesses have being paying below minimum wage since time immemorial and until this is challenged, there isn't much we can do about it. Perhaps, one of our labor lawyers will educate us better on this. One aspect I think lawyers need to exploit in Nigeria is Labor law. So many things are going wrong because we are not too sure on what our law states about working environment/conditions. |

Biodun556:lol. The owner of that school must be a school cert holder. After seeing this I can't help but ask myself, what's the point in getting a degree in school? Better to borrow money to start a hawking business than earn 18k or 26k monthly. |
Re: Funny Teacher Vacancy: Degree 26000 Naira by Kobojunkieee: 5:53pm On Sep 12 |
Bluntemperor:some laws guide the way businesses are to be run and one of them is the minimum wage law which requires that all businesses pay their employees at least the minimum wage. A business that receives support from the FG or State would be considered a non-profit business and that support would have to be given to aid the business in meeting the minimum requirements of the law without exemption. 2. It does not matter their qualifications or experience levels. Once a business owner commits to hiring an employee, that decision is to be made in agreement with that stipulated by the law. Even if hiring an employee as a driver, that driver is to be paid at least the legal minimum wage. That is the law. 1 Like |

Tokskob2008:Walahi teachers are suffering well well for Nigeria. My greatest regret was teaching during my productive years. Na so one idiot principal asked me to take physics, chemistry, biology , mathematics and further maths for year 2008 that they will pay me 11k . The idiot said he pays his principal 12k. Na so I curse am. 12k that is not up to my hour pay. God punish poverty |

GboyegaD:1. We say we want things to work in Nigeria yet in the same breath we give reasons for why the law should not be respected. Come on! naw! Why would you need a labor lawyer to educate you on common things such as abiding by the law? The major reason these businesses openly flout the law has to do with the fact that most Nigerians do not understand their rights by law. It has nothing to do with labor lawyers but with people always trying hard to make excuses for why the law should not be followed by ALL, something you are doing right this moment. 2. This does not make sense to me. The Law says the minimum wage is Naira 70,000 meaning that anyone who pays anything less than that is cleary in violation of the Law. Why are you tagging labor lawyers as if the law somehow depends on them? Any citizen not receiving minimum wage ought to have their employer sued for that. You cannot go and negotiate another minimum wage when the law is clear on how much it is. Simple! |

Well, I was paid same (25k) in my first teaching job in 2021 and that same year on September, I got another offer in a school paying 50K which I am still doing currently but now transport fare wan kill me. If there is no increment at least to minimum wage, I will sign out by December. Biodun556: 1 Like 1 Share |

GboyegaD:The Right Perspective is that which follows the Law. If education is too expensive people can also try homeschooling or sending their kids to public schools. No employee should be paid anything less than Naira 70,000. That is the Law! |

olumidedvd:Minimum wage is Naira 70,000. If you want to be paid according to the law then you can take it up with your employer, or have him sued for refusing to comply. It is the Law. |

Hmm, you are right but remember this is Nigeria where things don't work. Take for instance I have the money to hire a lawyer and sue my employer for not paying me minimum wage, remember my employer might be connected and do you think the judiciary are not compromised? They can delayed the case till eternity. Kobojunkieee: 1 Like |

olumidedvd:There is actually a free legal aid group in Nigeria. Problem is not too many are aware of their existence and they only probably receive funds based on how many legal cases or issues they get, https://legalaidcouncil.gov.ng/ You are right that this is indeed Nigeria but in that same country, what is been learned is that when the people band together to fight for a cause, things work sort of like they do in other countries and climes. For instance, if you and other Nigerians are sick and tired of being bilked by your employers, you can all come together to make a formal complaint and take your issue to the courts to have these employers made to account for why they refuse to abide by the law. Again, it is up to the people to decide whether they have had enough of the same bullsheet. 1 Like |

Thanks for the link, I have copies it to use for other things, but my current employer truly tried for me and you know the government just signed the new minimum wage, so we are all waiting keenly on their side to augment that in our next Salary (September or October) and if that is not done, many people are ready to go. Though, they have over 120 staffs. Kobojunkieee: |
Re: Funny Teacher Vacancy: Degree 26000 Naira by GboyegaD(m): 6:19pm On Sep 12 |
Kobojunkieee: Have you not read some state government in Nigeria saying they cannot afford to pay this? Are there not some states in the US where state minimum wage is less than that of Federal (Georgia, Wyoming, Montana etc.)? I think you should stop arguing this and focus your energy on something else. |
Re: Funny Teacher Vacancy: Degree 26000 Naira by GboyegaD(m): 6:21pm On Sep 12 |
Kobojunkieee: Aunty, I do not have full information on how the law applies and I believe ideally, every organization should comply however, we have seen instances where some states claim they cannot afford to pay. Besides, some companies are registered outside of the Federal Government thus, they may not be obliged to abide. I think we should leave this to labor lawyers to educate us. 2 Likes |

olumidedvd:I get what you are saying about your employer "trying" for you. Nigerians typically use that as an excuse to allow the status quo to continue without realizing that they harm the country by such pronouncements. The law is there as a guide to help make things work better for all Nigerians combined. You can't create pockets of exception when it suits you and then wonder why the country as a whole does not work at all for you and everyone else. It's kind of similar to what people keep saying about Tinubu doing his best. Yes, many Nigerians are hesitant to call for his immediate impeachment at this point even with all the many reasons piled up over the last 16 months in favor of just that. When you ask, some think it makes sense to let the man have until the next election which is about 3 years away even knowing that the current level of suffering in the nation is way too much for them to handle. Why do people do this? What you expressed there in your response has a lot to do with it. 1 Like |

Kobojunkieee: Stop what you don't know! Which law that says I should pay you above what I received as Income? So,if you have a business and you hire, people as Support group, which labour law, will make you run- down the Organisation, just because of Minimum Wages? May I ask you to tell this Nairaland Forum, where your business is,so that Nigerians can come for their Minimum Wages! Besides, why do you think the Private Entrepreneurs are saying Govt and Labour Leaders did nothing for Private Sector to follow the govt,in payment of the Newly agreed Small Scale. Payments of Workers Salaries is based on the Workers Productity and assurances of Continuous Existence of the Organisation Not on you pay today ,no more business tomorrow! Get that rule and stop advocating about the law that can't guarantee the Sustainability of the Business. Private Organisations all over the World are not the same as Government entities - that can Create Money anytime and even decides to riddle with Corruption of the resources. You either take what is offered to you or run to govt for employment. Life is full of Choices! |

GboyegaD:To answer this question of yours, there are no states in America where the Federal minimum wage is flouted. Yes, state minimum wages can be lower than federal minimum wages:That some states have yet to update their minimum wage acts at DOES NOT imply that they are in violation of the Federal Minimum wage.
