Former Nigerian Military Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, has expressed concerns over the country’s economic hardship, stating that it is “getting out of control.”

Abubakar stated this while receiving the leadership of the Campaign for Democracy and Human Rights, led by Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi, who visited his uphill residence in Minna, Niger State, on Tuesday.

He noted that many Nigerians struggle to afford basic needs like food and transportation.

“Everybody is crying about this hardship and it seems to be getting out of control, people cannot afford three square meals.

“The issue of transportation, the hike in fuel, the hike in school fees for the children and the lack of funds in everybody’s pocket is making life difficult for everybody,” the elder statesman observed.

Gen. Abubakar disclosed that he belongs to a forum that had passed three recommendations to the federal government on the way out of the economic hardship, as giving out palliatives is not the solution to hikes in food and other commodities across the nation.

He suggested the government should provide affordable food options by buying and selling essential items at lower prices.

According to him: “There is a need for government to flood and saturate the communities with food, let them (government) buy food and sell it at lesser prices to the people so that people will try to buy some of these food items depending on their pockets and income.”

Abubakar also urged peaceful protests ahead of the planned #EndBadGovernance demonstration on October 1, recalling the violence and looting that marred previous protests.

He lamented: “During the last protest, we saw unnecessary, uncalled for carnage, theft and criminalities; instead of protesting, the people went about looting even private houses; private individuals suffered in the hands of the demonstrators.”

Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Abdullahi Jabi, told the elder statesman that they were in his residence to rejoice with him on the celebration of his birthday, and prayed for long life and good health for him.

He also urged Gen. Abubakar to help prevail on the federal government to solve the problem of hardship and hunger in the land while soliciting his assistance for the implementation of some of its programmes.

shocked

Abdulsalami Abubakar is being economical with the truth.

Things aren't getting out of control, things got out of control the very day Tinubu took over the mantle of leadership in Nigeria.

Tinubu has nothing to offer, he just want to be the most decorated African politician(Governor, Senator and President) nothing more.

We know what would happen to food prices as soon as the federal government starts buying up foods on a massive scale from those producing the foods. Prices will shoot up. Especially, when part of the problem is that there is not enough being produced due to security and other factors.

Add government bureaucracy and corruption, prices will end up being higher than it is now. So, we would be back to square one.

Also, any suggestion that a government in a democratic setting can buy and sell food to tens of millions of people is laughable. Who will buy on behalf of the government and sell to people. Civil servants? What a joke. And who will be in charge of the hundreds of billions that would be deployed? Political appointees? What an even bigger joke.

The only countries that can successfully carry out such a huge undertaking are North Korea, China, Cuba, and may be Russia. And that's because in these countries, they don't need any court to tell them to shoot you if you are corrupt. They can do it on the spot.

In Nigeria, the scheme will turn out to be the biggest corruption fest since Lord Lugard first stepped foot here

It is easy to proffer solutions, but most solutions cant survive the practical realities of Nigeria.

Tinubu should please reverse everything.

By 'everything', I assume you mean fuel subsidy in particular.

Well, it can be done, but there will be severe economic consequences.

If the president announces that he is restoring full subsidy, the international institutions lending Nigeria money will stop doing so. Naira will immediately fall to around N2,000, and slowly move towards N2500 and beyond.

Any benefit people gain from the reintroduction of full subsidy will be lost as prices of everything imported will shoot up to unprecedented levels. Prices of locally produced goods will follow.

So, as you can see, reversing subsidy removal can be done. Nobody will stop Nigeria from doing it. But the pain thereafter will be worse than before. We should be prepared to buy a loaf of bread for N3000 or N4000. May be N5000 or N6,000. Not possible? Ask the people of Lebanon.

See Venezuela, Iran etc for developing countries that don't generate enough revenue but still refused to remove subsidy.

Palliatives are not the way to go but suggested "the government should provide affordable food options by buying and selling essential items at lower prices."

And what exactly do you call that?

It is easy to proffer solutions, but most solutions cant survive the practical realities of Nigeria.

Setting up some sort of government cooperatives, to buy up food or to import basic essential staples not produced enough in the country, and then regulate prices in a way that food will be cheaply available, is now the only option left to Bola Tinubu to save his presidency. Alternatively, he has to reverse all the harsh policies he has made, including the removal of the subsidies that has crippled the economy. Every wealthy country you see today, has_had some sort of subsidies around food production or housing. The Chinese subsidise their agriculture massively.

Some of you are so full of it that you will egg tinubu to his political extinction. Abubakar gave him a candid advice there. And as anformer military ruler, he knows that this administration is so massively vulnerable at this point. You don't know. The problem is that tinubus advisers are the worst types of neoliberal thinkers around. That's if he even has any serious economic advisers. I mean, changes are normally phased in seamlessly, in a way that you don't rupture the peace of the society. You don't overload the people/system with excruciating pains in the name of making the socalled ""needed changes". A people that go to bed hungry, will rise up against their rulers. It's a matter of time.

The North has Bola Tinubu where they want him. The north basically herded him into a ditch. Since his ego won't allow him to get serious minds to help him out of there, he will continue to fumble untill the whole thing blows up in his face. That may happen quicker than later, because they people will not keep quiet and die in their homes deu to poverty.

The north never supported tinubu out of love, or any "southern turn" nonsense. Actually what happened was that the North having been in governance for a very long time, knew that Nigeria was facing a huge economic mess post subsidies. They are also aware that subsidy removal was the only way out, since earnings were almost being used to pay off debts.

What you expected tinubu to do was to phase in changes little by little, with programs to cushion the effects. But no. He basically doubled the pains by removing subsidies, deregulating the exchange rate, increasing tariffs, jacking up school fees and even VATs, all at the same time. He overloaded the system. That's sheer administrative madness.
