Labour Party Candidate Akpata Blames LP Members For 'Selling Their Future For Peanuts’ By Working For APC, PDP

In a post-election statement, Akpata highlighted that while powerful forces were expected to influence the election, the real shock came from within the electorate.

Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s governorship candidate in Edo State, has expressed his deep disappointment in the role of voters, party members, and agents in what he described as the manipulation of the election held on Saturday.

In a post-election statement, Akpata highlighted that while powerful forces were expected to influence the election, the real shock came from within the electorate.

“We anticipated that powerful forces would attempt to skew the outcome in their favour, regardless of the will of the people,” Akpata said in his statement on Monday.
He added, “Regrettably, these fears have materialised. Yet, we must also confront an uncomfortable truth: the outcome was enabled not just by those who sought to manipulate the process, but also by the actions—and inactions—of a significant portion of our electorate.”

Akpata condemned the process, calling it “not an election but a transaction,” blaming the APC and PDP for vote-buying and accusing voters who stayed away of facilitating the manipulation.

“Let us be clear what transpired on 21 September 2024 was not an election but a transaction. It was enabled by those who chose to stay away, making it easier for the two dominant parties to afford a significant majority of the few votes on offer and by those who came out and willingly sold their votes,” he stressed.

Akpata lamented the situation, adding, “It became painfully clear that we did not have the people, as many, including some Labour Party faithful and agents, willingly sold their future for peanuts to the very political parties whose actions and policies have impoverished them.”

Following the election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APC candidate Monday Okpebholo as the winner, with 291,667 votes. PDP’s Asue Ighodalo polled 247,274 votes, while Akpata finished third with 22,763.

Labour Party Chairman in Edo, Kelly Ogbalo, also spoke out on Monday, claiming that the party would have won if the election had been free and fair. He alleged, “Labour Party won the election but was not allowed to take possession.”

Ogbalo detailed further, “What I mean by that is that the election was marred with serious irregularities. There was open vote buying. The security agencies failed to check this anomaly.”

When asked if the party would challenge the results in court, Ogbalo stated that no decision had yet been made.

The indigenes of Edo state are so happy with this election outcome.
Not a single death or chaos was recorded as it has been happening since '99.

Even the revered Oba of Benin came out to celebrate 🍾 and gave us some beautiful Edo dance steps 🕺 🕺 🕺 💃 💃 💃!!!

Na some children of hate, frustrations and perdition that have never visited Edo state for once in their miserable lives they cry pass on top this issue.

Enemies of the nation dem.

(Quote this post if you are one of them, inconsequential elements dem 😛 ).

After elections, sensible politicians carry out a post-mortem and take the lessons for future contests.

Olumide Akpata understood where their limitations came in.

In addition:

(1) Olumide Akpata ought to have seen that the general sentiment in Edo State was to support the governorship to come from the least populated senatorial district for inclusivity. LP ought to have considered that.

(2) Olumide Akpata obviously did not have a huge financial warchest for big rallies and to pay media houses for live coverage. All those funds he voted for media appearances on two networks ought to have been spent on mobilizing rural voters. Get these people to know you. There are areas in Edo State that have no electricity, some due to faulty transformers or outright government negligence. How would they know you when you are wasting time on television interviews?

(3) LP did not have dedicated structures on ground. There are 192 wards in Edo state and more than 4,000 polling units. LP needed more than 4,000 dedicated representatives to cover those polling units. LP dropped the ball here. We even heard some of their local party agents did not attend INEC training for election reporting. In the political game, you rely on the locals who are familiar with the terrane, not people who are social media careerists polluting the political atmosphere, but have no weight in local political persuasions.

(4) After the 2023 presidential elections, the Peter Obi revolution fizzled out like gas when you uncock fizzy drinks. Olumide Akpata banking on the Obidient movement was a recipe for losing. Even in the southeast, Peter Obi could not influence any governorship election. Alex Otti was already a popular politician and allegedly won the election in APC before he was manoeuvred by the ther behemoth.

(5) To run for any political office, have money or have a network of people who have lots of it. be ready to spend it and spend it like water. It is the biggest risk you'd take, because if you lose, you'd cry.

(6) If you want to run in 2028 or 2032, start preparing now. Be a frequent visitor to your state. Collect a chieftaincy title. Start a foundation. Be visible. Open your house to every tom, dick and dickhead. Help as many people as you possibly can. Let your people know you. Don't be elitist.

Best luck.

I hope he recoups all the money he has lost

Many elites do not understand the poverty of Nigeria's lowest class who form the majority.

Let's face it, it wasn't like Obi gave Anambra 24 hours power supply or the best road network. The only things the average Nigerian benefits from Government are subsidies (energy, electricity, health, and education) which are not quality.

If Obi had distributed the money to Anambra's downtrodden during the election period, wouldn't it be better than "saving" it for his successor to embezzle?

Nigeria has large ungoverned spaces and there's no guarantee that if electorates living in those spaces vote without receiving cash and gifts, good governance will come to them.

These people know that the politicians are the same people and getting election gifts from the highest bidder is the only way they can benefit from their collective wealth at least at the moment.

What did the people who refused APC's money in 2020 with the slogan "Edo No be Lagos" gain by voting Obaseki?

It was Esan's turn so this chancer should never have been on the ballot box in the first place.

Like one or two senators in Abuja, he jumped on the Peter Obi bandwagon, now he knows the kind of influence Peter Obi has in Edo state.

President Tinubu didn't even bother campaigning for Akpakomezer and APC won the state, shoe get size.

Zoning did not favour him.

Is it that LP does not understand that most people who voted for Peter Obi are not LP registered members?
