House of Gaa.....7/10

Great African epic. Great story and superb acting inkust say from the cast. Especially superb performance from Femi Branch. Man really proved his mettle and flexed his acting dexterity. Great casting choice.

But I'm seeing a synonymous trend of new Nollywood filmmakers going for this same type of stories of war and pillaging.
I'm hoping it gets more nuanced and unique before they start looking like they come from the same director or filmmaker.

Fumilayo Ransome Kuti.....6/10

Decent story retelling of the life and activist battles Fela's mom had to contend with during her time. Which seems to have influenced Fela later on in life.
Decent story overall.

Kingdom part 3 - Flame of destiny is a solid 10/10 for me.

One word for the part 3 of this franchise is simply "GOATED"
The battles in this movie are one of the best battles i have ever seen either in movies or series.
They didn't just fight battles but they teaches you on the importance of strategies, mind games and bravery when it comes to battles.

Indeed!! The person or rather, the general that leads a battles matters a lot for he is the brain power behind every victory.
This is one movie that you watch and at some point in the movie during the fights, you shout "Omor" in excitement in what you are watching.

I can't even begin to mention the lovely casts that have all captured my heart including the badaas general and the beautiful lady that is fighting along side them in the part 2 and this part 3.
Omor the lady is good, fast and powerful, even more powerful than Shim, though shim is more brave and strategic.

This movie has awaken my interest in chinnese historical movies, that country has fought so many battles, like literally China was form with the bloods of fallen men and women who died in battles.

It's time to look for the part 4 of this franchise, it seems sites haven't uploaded it yet but nevertheless i will do my research on how to get the part 4.
This franchise from the part 1 to part 3 are GOATED.
It's time to hunt for the part 4.

His three daughters is a solid 7/10 for me.
This is one beautiful, cool but tensed up funny family drama.
Totally loved it especially seeing that three of my favorite actresses are the main characters.

These movies with fewer not more than 4 or 5 characters seems to be very interesting because it allows you focus on the dialogues the more and then the characters grew on you on personal level.
The mini fights between two of the siblings was funny and intensed for me.
Totally loved the sibling family rivalry.

Another thing is the importance of casting in this project.
The importance of casting A list actresses that knows their onions and can actually act is very important.
You watch this movie and one thing you noticed are the casts, you can feel their aura as you watch the movie.

One mistake movie and series makers makes is casting upcoming and unknown and unproven actresses for main roles, most of the times it simply doesn't help your project.
If you want your project to grow, then hire actresses or actors that knows their unions and they will help you grow your project.

Love and other drug is a solid 7/10 for me.

This is one romantic drama that got me laughing my heart out.
So many funny scenes in this movie. Anyways it's really an emotional romantic movie, totally enjoyable and it's Adult rated with lots of nude scenes and steamy hot sex scenes.
Anna is a beautiful woman, her face card is awesome and it's nice seeing lagarta from the series "vikings" in this movie, she is sexy as ever.

In the end, love always win.
I love the fact that the true American culture was shown in this movie, the rich having a private party and just having sex with each other, no strings attached.

I do know that the reason why Diddy was arrested is that he involved little children and he was filming the sex without the consents of people but be that as it may, the rich and elites having private parties and having sex with each other isn't a new thing, it's been in existence in every rich society in the world including in Nigeria.

It's because Kunle Afolayan built a film village in Oyo state that depicts the Old Oyo empire, so it has made principal photography for movies along that plotline easy and now every filmmaker suddenly remembers that they have an "Old Oyo empire" story to tell and they are all running to Netflix and those ones looking for more reach here, are duly obliging. One of such movies is even releasing this Friday.

But locations and cinematography has never been the problem of our movies in my opinion. The critical missing piece is still the story and delivery. They will rather throw money at props, locations and etc than properly pay a screenwriter his/her due.

If you buy a shiny new Bugatti and hire a quack driver to drive it, the purpose it's in futility.

If we hack properly story telling, with the other tools of filmmaking we have now, we might actually be unto something good...

The invisibles is a solid 8/10 for me.

This science, supernatural family drama is a slow burner but i tell you something, it's a masterpiece.
If you think we are alone in this world, then you better reconsider your thoughts.

Indeed we are not alone, there is an alternate world in our world where the people over there can see us and we over here can't see them.
This life is indeed a mystery, this life is too deep.
Anyways, this movie is a masterpiece, it teaches on friendship, true love and then letting go off pains or past traumas.

It's nice seeing Gretchen moi from the series "Boardwalk empire", i have come to love seeing her face in movies or series.

Fun facts, she is 51 years and she is still one of my favorite celebrity crushes.

Yeah, I know about the Kunle Afolayan film village as well another one by Ibrahim Chatta where they said they spent 1bn on them.
I know its cos of these new facilities making it easier for filmmakers to start telling these stories that's why there's an influx but I didn't expect this much crazy frenzy for everyone to start telling the same story. This "Oyo Empire" flicks are starting to look over beaten in my opinion.

They're looking just the same. Same focus on war fights and politics and warring warlords with charms and JuJu and stuff. Then slap in a background romance story in between the chaos and that my good friend is a "similar trope" everyone is spamming.

I actually love the Oyo Empire storyline being that I was in my teenage years obsessed with reading those stories on Wikipedia as well as the Benin Empire.
I don't know why there's no one thinking about telling the stories of the infancy of these empires when they just started expanding, no Sango story despite all these largesse, no Osun or Oranmiyan just same old greedy Bashorun and co fights.
There's no active motivation to make each story unique in its own way.

Where's the Benin Empire since they have very similar set and production style. The only issue with that period will be the "Walls".

Just like you said, the writing and storytelling are the main issues cos Nollywood seems to have overcome the cinematography and quality equipment hurdles. Seems they've also learnt to depict decent action scenes regarding the times and costumes.
Cos I remember being gripped by these stories just only reading them back then. It was novel with the Jagun Jagun hype but now it's looking the same. There's even another one LISABI coming out later this month.
Good story but average delivery is the game. They'll just hype it because of the big production scale with the backing of Netflix money and co

Well i beg to differ.
Though i understand where you are coming from but actually some asaba movies have good story lines and plots, the problem with them are budgets, location and Cinematography.

Trust me, there are some Asaba movies you will watch either on Africa magic or YouTube that will get off your feet.
The problem is that the industry entirely lacks the financial budget to make their movies world standard.

Fun facts for those that actually spends time with Africa magic.
Asaba movies actually has better storylines and plots than Lagos movies.
Yes i know people will want to eat me raw for this like i don't know what i am saying but the thing is that you have to really sit down and watch movies from both industries and then compare the storylines and plots.

Personally i think if big companies start dropping huge budgets for asaba movies, you will be surprise how it will start gaining world wide momentum like k dramas, especially all these village k dramas like Gumong.

All the Asaba industry needs are big budgets for Fx and more so proper battle scenes.

Well this is just my opinion.

I think this movie deserves more than a 6/10 rating tho...the market women riot scenes alone deserves an 8/10 for dramatization. You can tell those actresses really put in some laudable efforts to bring the story of the movie's main character to life, partly because it also bordered on the issue of gender inequality.

It's mainly cos of those women riot scenes that it's score is even this high to me...the women significantly propped up the score for me. But for some reasons I didn't really connect with the overall story, a few actors and some smaller nitty gritty.
The movie just doesn't resonate with me as same as others.

You should know Nigerians by now. They are always seeking the next gold whilst still exploring the one in their hands. That particular niche of story seems to be the biggest pull of Netflix's money now, who themselves want a footprint here of projects grounded in our culture and rich history. The spamming would have been worthwhile if these movies had any semblance of depth.

Again, this stems from the reason i gave in the previous paragraph. Old Yoruba filmmakers used to tell these stories you crave but this was way back in the days, so low quality and an hairline budget , but they actually used to be good and historically factual, i actually enjoyed quite a few. But since Kunle Afolayan seemed to have struck gold with Aníkúlápó, all other filmmakers have been trying to replicate it by making movies along that line, sadly, all other stories around the Yoruba lore, will have to wait 😔.

Where's the Benin Empire since they have very similar set and production style. The only issue with that period will be the "Walls".
Bruhh, to be totally honest, the Yorubas and Igbos practically own filmmaking here, so filmmakers from other parts of the country lack the pull to attract the kind of "modern investment" it would take, to properly tell these stories, hence less incentive for them and i am not sure the country is tribally and religiously sane enough for a Yoruba or Igbo filmmaker to tell the story of the Benin Empire, i can't even imagine the uproar if they even make the slightest mistake. The biggest filmmaker from Edo, Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen, made a film about the "1897 invasion of the Benin Kingdom by the British", that was actually good but bro couldn't sell the film to a major distribution company, albeit in times without streaming platforms boom. He couldn't recoup his investment and he just left the scene.

Just like you said, the writing and storytelling are the main issues cos Nollywood seems to have overcome the cinematography and quality equipment hurdles. Seems they've also learnt to depict decent action scenes regarding the times and costumes.

Bruhhh, You don't want to be in a room with a Nigerian Film exec that has Netflix wallet to burn. They don't listen to anything you have to say. You present them with a story, they redo 90% of it, and tell you, if you want your name to be on Netflix, just relax and let's do it my way, if you agree, the movie comes out lacking substance and you are blamed, if you don't agree, you lose money, get blacklisted in the industry and lose international exposure because of one stubborn film exec. That's why most Film exec just go ahead, and double as director, cinematography, casting, and costume in their film!, giving rise to subpar projects but hey, it's on Netflix 😩.

Even this "House of Gàà" , a freelance filmmaker on twitter back then, decimated all that was wrong with it from the trailer alone, months before it even released and instead of take notes, industry bigwigs were calling for his head. They were wrong costumes and the actors actually using "Lagos accent" for a supposed Oyo film. A little effort into research and they would have known that though, Yoruba is the common language of the South west, but each region speaks it distinctly. An Ondo speaks different from an Oyo person, even within Ondo, they are distinct differences within the same Yoruba dialect with each region. These little details matters when telling a story as grounded in culture as this. The original one before this called, "Bashòrun Ogà" was more grounded in the nuances of the subject matter than this, despite the low visual quality and it coming out some 20 years ago...

If I have my way, i will ban any movie from Asaba because what the actual F, are those Mfs even doing making movies over there? 😩😩.

They write, direct, cast any riff raff they see on the streets, do principal photography, edit, and release all inside a week 😩.

They saturate the market with rubbish, and dance around the same nonsensical 5 plot that makes absolutely zero sense.

The only reason Africa Magic (which is an absolute dead channel anyway) insists on them, it's because they pay close to nothing in royalties, airing them, they are even given the garbage free promo. Instead of paying huge distribution fees for movies with actual quality.

That Africa Magic needs to be tried for crimes of intellectual retardation. Those people are the lifeblood and reason these Asaba Nollywood are still in business and continues to mass produce epic rubbish. They've made them realise they have a market for their rubbish.

Just watched a trailer this afternoon on WhatsApp posted by one former colleague I know who works in the filmmaking industry and a production company. Saw some veteran actors in it including Ramsey Noah.... Epic shite I must say just from seeing that trailer alone. I just hissed and know I won't be caught dead watching that rubbish.
