Former President Goodluck Jonathan, on Thursday, revisited claims that over $49billion oil money was missing from the government coffers under his watch in 2014, noting that the narrative was not true.

Jonathan made the assertion during the launch of a book, ‘Public Policy And Agent Interests: Perspectives From The Emerging World, co-authored by a former minister of Finance, Dr. Shamshudeen Usman, who served as minister of planning under his administration.

The allegation about the missing money was made by the then Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) now Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, who incidentally is a contributor to the book.

In the book, Emir Sanusi apparently made reference to the saga, which he claimed led to his sack as CBN governor by President Jonathan.

But, Jonathan, who chaired the book launch event, in his opening remark, said as much as he agreed with the concept of the book and recommended it for research and policy framing, he disagreed with Sanusi’s claim on the missing $49bn.

The former president, who said Sanusi was not sacked but suspended, said there was no way such a huge amount of money would be stolen in Nigeria and the impact won’t be felt.

He said that for a country whose budget was about $32bn at the time, it was impossible for the $49bn to have been stolen from the country’s treasury.

Jonathan also recounted how he was confronted by the then German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, over the matter and that he explained that such money couldn’t have been stolen from a struggling country.

He, however, said he was vindicated about the porosity of the claims after the former CBN governor began to change the narrative from $49bn to $20bn and later $12bn.

Let mention that I did not agree completely with some issues raised by one of the contributors. But I don’t intend to join issues because he is our royal father. And he is here.

The one he raised that he was sacked because he blew a whistle that the Federal Government lost $49.8billion is not quite correct. He was not sacked, he was suspended because the Financial Reporting Council queried the expenditure of CBN. And there were serious infractions that needed to be looked at. That was the reason. But somehow, the time was short. So before we finished, his tenure elapsed. Probably, he would have been called back.

On the issue of $49.8billion, till today I am not convinced that the Federal Government lost $49.8 billion,
the former President stated.

Jonathan further added that PriceWaterHouseCoopers (PWC), which investigated the matter, revealed that no such amount was stolen but that $1.48bn could not be accounted for by the NNPC at the time.

He also recalled that the then Senate Committee on Finance, led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi, investigated the issue and didn’t find the claims to be true.

LEADERSHIP reports that Emir Sanusi II, who is currently present at the occasion, might respond to former President Jonathan’s remark afterwards.

No one said it was stolen from the treasury.

A whole CBN Governor said up to $20b from oil sales did not accrue into government purse over a period of years during the government of Jonathan that was then incumbent.

Finance Minister, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala did her own investigations subsequently, and admitted unaccrued oil funds was valid, but the amount was about $10b.

It wasn't exactly a fabrication. I think Sanusi was initially trying to help Jonathan. He had previously written a private letter to GEJ to try and investigate what he believed was missing money by this same NNPC we are still talking about today. But because GEJ did not seem to have either seen the letter or was not seen to be doing anything about it about 6 months later, the private letter somehow got leak to force the hand of GEJ.

Unfortunately, it came close to election and GEJ now saw it as an affront. I think he could have handled that particular matter better. It would have even been an opportunity to shine but those around him made sure he suspected everyone as not wanting him to return to power.

It looks like this guy below is in the finance industry. He has explained what I was trying to say above with the right financial teminology.

mikeapollo:

Jonathan is truly clueless as a president!
Why is he defending the NNPC?
Sanusi said there was an unreconciled difference between oil revenue and remittances made by NNPC to the CBN!
Reconciliation of balances is normal thing in Finance and Accounting. A balance that is unreconciled today can be perfectly reconciled tomorrow.
It was journalists, the media and political opponents that termed it as ''missing'' money.
The total amount can be reconciled in bit and tranches.
It is a fact that the NNPC could not reconciled USD20b up to date

Jonathan the Otuoke man without balls.
That unfounded story from Sanusi and other propagandas affected his government and made him lost his second term bid.

I keep saying it. Anyone that thinks Tinubu will lose his 2027 second term election as a sitting president is just being delusional.

As far as God spares his life, that man will rule 8 years even if he burns the whole country to the ground. grin

He was being used by APC and Buhari because they want power return to the North.

He Sanusi was pathologic lier that was in a government but was working against and playing a northerns card. He used $1.49 billion government money to renovate and build Emirs palaces across the North without legislative appropriation.

I remember when he was summoned by the Senate, he claims and denied that no money was missing because he couldn't articulate the amount he was alleging.

These lies are old and stale. Tell us how despite the biggest corruption in the history of the world He was able to pay subsidy to keep fuel at 97 and exchange rate at 200250? Or how Nigeria became the biggest economy in Africa? Listen guy. GEJ, Tinubu and other Nigeria past & former president's are set for life! So are their children and grandchildren. Let's not support them instead let's gather and take our country back so we can live well when this wealth is spread

Funny enough after GEJ the useless Buhari government that succeeded him supervised official oil bunkering which ran for 7+yrs and his govt of integrity did as if they didn't know and no one was prosecuted.
After the brain dead Buhari came Emilokun who does not know what he is doing and daily further killing the country.
He may be the last president of the fraud called Nigeria because Hunger now walk in Nigeria with 4 legs 😂
