It's not a Nigerian thing. It's a husband and wife thing under the common law. It has both liabilities but it also offers some protections. You can be legally liable for a lot of things things done by your wife. If it was his adult kid, he can make a case, but as long as it's your wife, your own done be.

This current loan company's are crazy....they try to take their loan from anyone they can find....the husband is on the wifes contact so they called him and lie she used him as collateral......if he falls for it...otilor niyen..

They've done it to me too calling me on Whatsapp that my cousin is owing 1.7M and that I'm the guarantor, if I dnt pay they will take possession of my valuables.....I laugh tire....

Legal documents must carry the name and be verified by lenders before giving loans. Nobody gives loans when the documents does not carry your name and even if the said property is co-owned, everybody listed on the documents must be present for loan to go thru. The story does not add up. Even local lenders does not give loans to you if you do not own the property because they know when people defaulted, you can't enforce such contractual obligations in court of law.

So, as an account officer processing a credit for a customer, a woman will forge her husband' s signature and that will fly in your eyes to the extent of pushing it further to the appropriate authority in HQ especially for the amount involved for approval?

Oga, which bank will operate like as you say, ie give a loan to a wife using the husbands property as collateral because their name is similar. Omo, even sabinus microfinance merchant bank won't do that. Even if a man dies, do you think the wife can sell his property or take loan from the bank without a letter of administration? In that case why can't she just walk into the bank and demand access to his account as their names are similar and she is his wife?
