In a bid to curb the economic losses incurred through illegal mining, a Senator representing Abia North, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has called for the establishment of a ranger service to tackle the issue, ABN TV reports.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6nGq-DTSHc
Speaking during a plenary session, Kalu emphasized that Nigeria loses approximately $15.9 billion yearly due to illicit mining activities.

Kalu stressed that a well-equipped ranger service would not only address illegal mining but also assist the Nigerian police and customs in combating smuggling. He proposed arming the rangers to ensure their effectiveness.

The senator highlighted the significance of securing Nigeria's mining areas, pointing out that mining has the potential to generate more revenue than crude oil. With natural resources abundant in every region, Kalu urged Nigerians to capitalize on these opportunities.

How these guys quote figures without statistics or proof is amazing!
Is 15.9 billion dollars not more than our yearly budget?
Why can't we secure and regulate the sector if such revenue can be generated??
Is this amount not far more than the amount we are owing different countries and world bank; and we are still borrowing
Na God go help us for this country!!

Everything is Nigeria is always stolen...

People's Mandate, stolen

Constituency development, stolen

State allocations, stolen

Mineral resources, stolen

Pension and gratuities, stolen

Salaries, stolen

Even some people are stolen....

Before the election, even Tinubu advised that power is to be grabbed and run with, which means, 'steal'.

Just tell me what is not stolen in Nigeria if not de@th.

Most times I wonder how Nigeria still stand with all these stealing...

That's a country that was formed out of the selfish interest of the British to steal from her people

Mind you, our great grand children will still complain of everything been stolen in Nigeria.

My advise is, this country should go back to regional government or we divide... By doing that, everyone should handle their own thieves the way they like

Compromised Nigerian elite are complicit in this illegal mining trade across the four corners of this country

Settle them with a pittance, and the resources are all yours

Illegal mining is a drop of water in the ocean compared to what we lose daily to looting, stealing, wasteful spending and corruption by government officials

Why Ranger service?..... is it to go after individual citizens mining with spade and bucket? ... when "foreign investors" that the FG invited are openly doing large scale illegal mining? Are they presently untouchable? How much are we losing through them? ...$2.8 billion?

Too bad. That's why banditry is thriving in the North West and North Central.... Since the security agents can't provide safety and security for legal mining, government should contract security of the mining sites to Turji Bello, same way they contract Tompolo to secure pipelines in the creeks of Niger Delta. Failed government and useless soldiers/ police

We all know this can be stopped 95% by restructuring and let communities own their resources n pay tax to a regional government who in turn pay taxes to federal

There is no how the community that owns the resources would be in charge n u have illegal mining it's not possible

But because we are scares of what a particularly people would do in a restructured Nigeria... So let's keep messing around

But, where do you get that figure from?
How much percentage is stolen?
How much do we make annually?
Don’t just throw words around because no journalist will ask you to give us proof.

Nigeria bureau of statistics should come and confirm or disprove this information.

He is saying the truth.
The amount of solid minerals and precious metals that are being stolen from Nigeria on yearly bases is alarming.

The man (Orji Kalu) himself has some investments through his company in the solid minerals or mining sector which he was referring to in the video. Towards the end of the video reportage, he did CLEARLY say that oil which Nigeria depends on is going out of fashion in many countries of the world and it important to focus on the mining of solid minerals found all over Nigeria with the provision of armed forest rangers to tackle the illegal mining menace which has led to the smuggling of solid precious minerals (Just like what is going on in the Democratic Republic of Congo).

You're right it's alarming, but mere quoting these figures like he keeps the records is something else.
On the other hand, mining and solid minerals is the most stolen, hidden and under reported cabalistic sector in the Nigerian economy, far more corrupt than the much talked about oil industry!!

Insecurity is a big problem here, bandits don't allow people farm again, soon they will also invade the mining sector and take over, a government that cannot protect it's farmers, and pipelines (which is the main source of income), you're talking about mining?
If you cannot protect your source of income, what then you can protect
