Maybe because I know a little bit about the history of Dahomey and the Amazons, that's why I have never felt inclined to watch the movie. I don't quite appreciate Hollywood's retelling of a story that involved slavery
Exactly, they retelling the story of Africans written by non-Africans, acted by Americans

Idris Elba as okonkwo.

Oyibo wants to take this away too. Let's see how it goes.

My favourite scene was when one man told okonkwo that akamefuna called him father.

It was touching.
Elba with his fake Nigerian accent😂. But I think with his work with Beasts of no nation and with a24 involved : it could be special

With A24 at least one might be assured they'd give it their best shot.
Imo, This is some level of cultural appropriation. You can't tell me that one of the biggest stories from the African literature scene written by one of the greatest author the continent has ever produced is going to have no involvement in terms of headline casting from the people the story is actually about. It makes zero sense. The production can be foreign given, but give Nigerian actors the chance to star in it. I don't even want to hear the BS, that Idris Elba is black and whatnot, that brother is 100% British and he has no business playing this role except they are gonna interpret the book wrong. It's like saying Tony Umez should go and play Thor!...These things matter.

So, realistically, How will he even interpret Okonkwo? with a British accent? or he will improvise a Nigerian accent? which imo opinion will only make it worse...they are already losing me...

Well, i wish we took ourselves more seriously, the NTA adaptation happened eons ago, and since then no Nigerian film exec has deemed it fit to retell one of the greatest literary work from these parts..😔

Things Fall Apart had a TV series in the early 90s on NTA.

Yep, I heard about that. But it's largely unknown. Up until this project was announced I didn't know Things Fall Apart has ever been adapted.

False. it was a famous series in the 80s, on NTA and it brought Pete Edochie to fame. Young and old always talk about it when the man is mentioned. Stop making unfounded claims like it's authority. You are not omniscient

Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen still does movies but is very very low key. He's mainly doing those straight to YouTube releases now. Actually sad he hasn't benefitted from said Netflix largesse.

Bruh, You know i am in a love-hate relationship with Nollywood. I am their biggest fan when they rarely get it right and their biggest critic when they often miss the mark.

I do know the allure of seeing them is nothing compared to movies from say Hollywood, the gulf in class and quality is so staggering, even worse off, when you actually realise that Nollywood is one of the oldest film industries in the world and should actually be doing better. But please don't turn your back completely on them, there are still some indie filmmakers doing great things here on a meagre budget, far from the noise of the shiny unpolished ones that make it to Netflix and Prime video each week...In fact I made a list, sometime ago...These ones i can vouch for, not Hollywood standard but they are good and worthwhile...do check them out when you have the time...

Adírè (2023).
A Father's Love (2024).
With Difficulty Comes Ease (2024)
Sistà (2022).

Breath of Life (2023).

Funny enough I worked on a Nollywood-esque movie recently so it's kinda hypocritical of me bashing the industry but it pains so much seeing the potential but we barely scratching the surface.
It was a BBC sponsored movie with Nigerian heritage filmmakers. It was a highly organised set and production (something unheard of in Nollywood ) and I might say it's one of the biggest production spend on filmmaking in Nigeria if not the biggest. It told a familiar time in naija's history and I'm looking forward to when it's released and the reception.

I remember we both discussed about Nollywood quality few years ago and how the coming of Netflix largesse will propel the industry to greater heights.
And yet, here we are still talking about quality...only improvements in production quality and being qualified to stream on VOD can be noted.

See how Koreans and Japanese over perform with shoe string budgets compared to Hollywood and yet they deliver and specialized in their capacity.
Nollywood no fit even specialize on good comedy no more, the genre we so much love to produce.

These historical movies with "Oyo Empire" period piece is a cheat code for Nigeria to market herself to the world. And yet these people ain't seeing the big picture despite conquering funding palava.
E just dey pain person dey are all now looking formulaic after someone cracks the code to success.

A good number of your aforementioned movies has crossed my radar sometime. Downloaded King of Thieves, Breath of Life, Gangs of Lagos for a while now but ain't watched.
Afamefuna and The Trade really piqued my interest with the brilliant trailer I watched. Planned on watching them but somehow missed when they released.
I heard of Coming From Insanity a while back.

At least with Netflix and a recently resurgent theatrical culture in Nollywood, the industry seems to be on the way evolution. Probably with more profitability more riskier tales might be told.
At least now Nollywood films now compete with Hollywood films for box office gross over here and popularity.

Make we dey see sha maybe I might start looking at the industry in a new light.

Who has heard of Mami Wata? It was heavily discussed here when it was a contender at Sundance. With the serious marketing the filmmaker did for it. But film release and nobody talk about am for here since then? Wetin sup?

It's not cultural appropriation - telling the story of Things Fall Apart is not just a Nigerian story if you actually think about it - it's an African story and a story of history- the story of Okonkwo should not be segregated to Nigerians only, after all, the events of Okonkwo's death was what played out in almost every British colony.

If it has to be told on screen by a Hollywood studio with a budget a Nigerian studio can't afford: I think it'll be perfect and also you forget Idris Elba produced Beasts of no Nation - 90% of the side characters were Africans. The boy actor who played as the protagonist spent a year in Africa learning the accent and practicing for the role. I'd rather have a good Hollywood actor play a role than the mediocre actors we have in Asaba.

We have talented actors - probably, but most of them don't understand Hollywood and if you don't know this - A24 is a Hollywood studio and they have to abide by the Actor's Guild - no actor can act in a Hollywood film without being a member of Actor's Guild Association except you're a background actor or extra and you don't believe A24 with a tiny budget will fly a lot of Nigerians to act as background actors in different film sets🤷🏽‍♂️.

If you haven't watched Beasts of no Nation - watch it - they did an amazing job with the accents and the acting. Idris Elba did an amazing job with the accent - accents can be acted - there're a lot of actors who act with different accents from their main accent : even learn a new language for the role : I won't be surprised if Elba speaks Igbo in the series, anything is possible.

Think of the screenplay - I don't trust Nigerians to write a great script that's totally original🤷🏽‍♂️ sorry but that's just the honest truth.

It's not necessarily the problem of the writers and directors. The normal consumer of Nollywood content don't want to be challenged with complex storylines - it's not like they're force feeding Nigerians bad content - it's just the content most Nigerians want🤷🏽‍♂️ that's why most movies like Mami wata doesn't do well😪.

True. Solid point.

Cos I know no matter how I hate Africa Magic or Nollywood low tier Asaba films, my dad will be there to watch whatever that nonsense Epic has to deliver.

So, you're right. Without the audience willingness to watch those content, they won't have the guts to keep regurgitating same shït. Profitability would have forced them to look elsewhere or evolve.

Who have watched this LISABI??
Wanted to download it now but went back to check the teaser trailer and I just dey vex.

Just watched this main trailer and it got me hooked with the nice Cinematography, color grading, set design, visuals and costume, location.

The only problem is this story is just almost the same thing I watched in HOUSE OF GAA last weekend. Same everything, the difference only being this time they've fighting against tax collectors but the themes still lies on greed and excessive power.

Loosely even similar to FUNMILAYO RANSOME KUTI I watched same weekend. Something that's not even in similar subgenre. Same greedy tax collectors and a wicked and stubborn monarch. With a figure of the people to lead an uprising. Slap in some romance story while at it. And you've got a perfect blend. 🙄

Omo, I no understand again. 😩 E be like say these people just dey copy and paste from same writers.

Chiwetel Ejiofor did a marvelous job as the lead actor in 12 Years A Slave. According to your argument, an American of slave ancestry ought to have played the role instead of Chiwetel of Igbo ancestry.

Commerce doesn't give a damn about tribalism. Those behind this project are in it for the money. They know Idris Elba will give the movie a broader reach, while an Igbo actor will subject the film to an Igbo confinement.

Take a look at all those who have starred as Mandela in movies, how many of them are South Africans?

If you guys want an Igbo man as Okonkwo in a new Things Fall Apart, then go set up your own production and stop telling David Oyelowo what to do with his own investment.

It's so sad to read post on X complaining that a Yoruba man is behind the project. They are already trying to start a campaign against him. Well, there's nothing anyone can do about it except rant. Angry people should go and do their own film and let's see.

I have had time to reflect bro. I think we not being serious with our movie industry it's the root of all these, and it's not even peculiar to Nollywood but the entire African movie industry. Most of our stories and historical experiences in the continent, have been continually retold by Hollywood, even sadly better. Take e.g Joseph Olita's (An African) portrayal of Ida Amin in The Rise and Fall of Ida Amin (1981) and Forest Whitaker's portrayal of the same character in The Last King of Scotland (2007). The latter was seen as too brute and historically inaccurate and met with so many negative reactions, with many accaliming it was "unrefined" for the screen. Forest Whitaker went on to grab an Oscar for his, so i need not say more.

Wait, shey na Idris Elba wan portray Okonkwo?? Omo..😳

Case in Point. Nigerian film exec, like i have been have been telling you for days aren't serious, just leave Chinua Achebe's "Things fall Apart" sef, there are literally thousands of exceptionally good books here they can bring to screen, They can just go through Cyprian Ekwensi catalogue and they will be good. What about Buchi Emecheta's Joys of Motherhood or H.A. Mohammed's The Last Days at Forcados High school . All these will make for good tv but No, A typical Nigerian Film exec thinks the Nigerian experience is about been unnecessarily loud, crass, jaiye jaiye and the likes, so this niche is what they repeatedly try to bring to screen.

The EbonyLife deal with Netflix is actually dead in the water in respect of these adaptations we seek. These mfs haven't come up with a single script since the deal, and the last big project they had was that Ólutûre part 2 that nobody asked
for

See bruh....i genuinely can't with this industry 😔
