Some will still get caught in the flood. Stubbornness or lack of options?
Tough times

How can you even think of stubbornness in a situation as this?

How many law abiding ones have options?

May those in said area get the succor they need this time.

Very irresponsible of govt to just tell people to leave their homes without providing temporary shelters for them......this thing happens every year and their already should be a plan in place to cater for the affected people till the water recedes.

That statement by the commissioner is callous and no iota of empathy on his side " if they refuse to leave then they should face the consequences" leave to where, how, when? Govt business needs to be handled with the highest level of responsibility.

Before you quote me I am a tinubu supporter, but I am not a mindless supporter like obidients ...... what's wrong is wrong!!

Why can't waterboard have a means of discharging the overstayed water without flooding the city?

The waterboard generates funds and should be able to pay for damages and compensation....

That way, their heads will begin to have sense ...

There should have been irrigation channels where this water would have been useful for agriculture so as to avoid flooding in the densely populated parts of the water flow course.

na wa , i think our politicians need to return to the school of governance. how can you tell people to vacate a place without providing a temporary alternative? no alternative given to them, and no temporary shelters provided, should they go and live on the streets?
The government should try and liaise with religious bodies and schools to accommodate people for a while so that when they open the dam people will have a place to stay till the water subsides.
when situations are still preventable and manageable they won't do the right thing until disaster happens then they will start running helter-skelter

another valid point. they should even have a good use for the released water , using it for irrigation purpose is a good one .

Why are all the dams releasing water?

Is it a normal practice?

Yes it is, dams have there water retention capacity and the water needs to get released when beyond that capacity especially during raining season.

It is done almost every year, even dams in Cameroon affects people here in Nigeria when released because water by nature would always find it's course no matter what.

Is this how it's done in Europe and other advanced counties too? With all these plenty water we still dey get epileptic power supply.

It means we have not harness how to use the water productively to benefit humanity and the only thing the unproductive government can do is to release the water into the houses of its citizens, causing deaths, displacements, permanent disabilities, hunger, malnutrition and extreme poverty amongst the citizens.

Why not release the water bit by bit, instead of releasing at once that will cause damage to the areas?

God bless all Nigerians and ignore SE... Why is it difficult to get a reasonable person from your family?

Answer me, why?

This was the reason your father couldn't achieve any meaningful thing all through his miserable life... Even your mother was sleeping with men and using the money to cook for your father... Chai... πŸ˜‚ πŸ˜‚

In case you don't know, your father was aware that you're not his biological son but the poor man has no option than to accept his fate.

In summary, being broke and stuup1d is the height of a miserable life and that's what you are now.

Not all dams are for hydro power, there are different types and sizes of dams....however I. Europ as you mentioned, their are strict laws about property development especially in low lying flood plains so as to avoid things like this.however here in Africa,it's anything goes and no one really cares where you build your house, even if it's right in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

What's the dam for when it can't supply water to the city ,

Must all the dams release their waters at the same time of the year? Is there no standard body regulating the release of this waters.
Unfortunately, the rain is falling everywhere at the same time. It's better to release water than the dam to break. What I don't understand is why people keep building extremely close to waterways. It's never safe to be to close to water channels

Dams need to release excess water during this period to avoid overflow better still dam bust, it's the right thing to do, and it's also good they make a statement before releasing the excess water.

As usual.
Another time to cash out big from contributions.

The only defensive mechanism this useless government provide is only to warn Nigerians about the impending flood nothing more to do.

It's the uselessness and ineffectiveness of these useless leaders in power.....

Funny how this doesn't resonate with the topic in question but let me address something.

What is the proactiveness you speak about please?

That the government alerting the people about the impending flood as the only preventive measure to secure the lives a d property of her citizens?

After the government gets the information concerning the flood, with the time they have. Which resources has been put in place to lessen the effect of this flood?

Lastly, Nigeria still leads as one country with the worst governance in Nigeria so tell me without tears in your eyes, who is making the country look bad to outsiders?
