It's not like we can't but it's not the best material for building homes, especially if you cannot maintain it. Also you need lots of lumber (wood) and they have to be highly treated.

It's only in US & Canada that they use wood like that... Other developed countries like the UK and other EU countries use normal bricks, so it's not even advisable.

Our own houses can last longer without maintenance.

imagine having to battle natural disaster and also battle human/leadership disaster

Does that mean is quite expensive compared to bricks.
So now my question is this. Can one get such wood of high quality like that here? The thought of it instead of bricks fascinates me..

The major difference is treatment. It's not as if our wood is not good enough but they are not treated so we don't have the same quality of finished wood for home construction.

In terms of cost however, it would definitely be more expensive in Nigeria since treated wood is not readily available.

Go and sit down with that your irritating mentality. Read your post, and all that kept going through my mind was, how do your wife and friends manage to tolerate you on a daily. Why the endless insult? What did i say that was so upsetting to you? We are going to argue and insult ourselves over "which is stronger; wooden houses or houses built with blocks and cements"?? We still have bad leaders, evil minded individuals, and all sort of internal wars going on.
I always say God knows what he was doing when he choose not to include natural disasters in africa, because we can't handle it.
If stuff like this happens here in nigeria a whole village or villages will go down, because even after some die on the spot, the trapped ones that didn't get rescued on time might eventually die, then those who survived it and need urgent medical help will be disappointed, those that need aids and palative will be embarrassed and heartbroken because the so called politicians will use such means to play political games, and take what is meant for the people.
