Atiku Writes National Assembly, Seeks Six-year Term For President by Kuginzi: 6:42am On Oct 01
A former Vice President and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 general elections, Atiku Abubakar, has written to the National Assembly, requesting an amendment to the Constitution to allow for a six-year single term for the President and state governors.

In a memorandum to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Review, Atiku also proposed that the presidency be rotated between the North and South.

It is noteworthy that during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s presidency, he advocated for a six-year single term for the presidential seat.

Following the 2023 general elections, Atiku has continued to support this tenure proposal
.

He stated, “The office of the President shall rotate among the six geopolitical zones of the federation on a single term of six years, flowing between the North and South on the single term of six years respectively.”

Atiku urged the National Assembly to “amend Section 135(2) to read: ‘Subject to the provisions of subsection (1), the President shall vacate his office at the expiration of a period of six years.’”

Additionally, he proposed the “substitution of an aspirant” in Section 285(14)(a) with “a voter.”

The former Vice President also suggested that the minimum educational qualification for a person to run for election should be the Ordinary National Diploma instead of the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination. He proposed an amendment to Section 65(2)(a) to read: “He has been educated up to at least Ordinary National Diploma in any recognised academic institution.”

Furthermore, he recommended the insertion of a paragraph in Section 65(2)(a)(i) to read: “Evidence of certificates of all educational qualifications of a candidate shall be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission or an affidavit by the candidate in the event of loss of his/her educational certificates, qualifications obtained, and dates, stating the schools attended.”

Atiku also advocated for political parties to have more power in the candidate selection process. He proposed an “amendment to Section 65(2)(b) to read: ‘He is a member of a political party whose name is in the register to be made available by his political party to the Independent National Electoral Commission 30 days before the conduct of the political party’s primary and he is sponsored by that party.’'

Lol, so a useless president can stay for 6 years..

4 year tenure is still better.

At least they perform for 2 years out of the 8 years.

1 year each before election, for performance.

Imagine 6 years with nothing to lose, a looting spree

Where are the performances you're talking about? Where are buharis and Tinubus "two years" wonderful performances? Has the country not been practicing 4 years double tenures that has ruined everything and accentuated the level of ethnic acrimony across regions? Copying everything done in America, is part of our political problems in Nigeria. Who needs a bicameral Legislature at Abuja for instance, when all of tinubus bills are passed with ease?

Imagine the billions that could be saved if we only have a single house of less than 60 men as the National Assembly. Atiku seems to be the only one amongst them, that is worried about what is going on. Few days ago, he warned everyone of the dangers of a "one party state", and some were laughing because they are currently ontop. They will soon cry when they're at the receiving end. He seems to understand that an illegitimate president, can not spur a nation towards political peace and economic growth.

Don't mind them. So that we will be with little or no good leadership in 6 years. As in 6 freaking years. These people think Govornance is just a game they can push people here and there.

A Tinubu in a 6 year presidency na die. He never use 6 year sef,we dey see shege.

Contesting for second term makes some of them to perform in their first term all because they needed second term votes. Now just giving them a single 6year term is an avenue for them doing nothing

As in absolutely NOTHING

6 year tenure. Logical reasons why❓ none. If Our present condition in this present regime is to deepen in the next six years at this rate? Terrible. We vote in useless keadrs in nigeria and since we r looking for a savior we can't give longer tenures to subtle criminals
2.Ond is too minor to give to someone to run an entire nation. Too minor. B Sc or even PhD shud be d least.
3. If only we can restrixt our voting populace to people of sound academic mind to avoid these disastrous national electoral mistakes we keep making

One thing I like about Atiku is that he is not into lamba or seeking attention like the other guy or just criticizing for criticism's sake. He at least does some level of research and even when he is playing politics like the Oando saka, he does it in the form of asking the FG to clarify on position.

I think I kind of like the 6 year single term position. I remember GEJ also proposed same. As for rotation, I do not know if one region will jetison it after they have already enjoyed it because it will mean that every region has to wait 36 years cycle.

The first problem I envisage will be "Who goes first", just this reason alone can prevent this idea from taking off because of the high level of mistrust in the country.

That’s what baffles me , upon all their education these people are the willing executioners of a tyrant ( Buhari and Tinubu) all based on tribal affiliations, abacha was just less than 40 yrs ago and one day the table will turn again

I am undecided about the 6 year term...

But I like Atiku's constructive way of criticism and his obvious perchance for reforms in the current system.

It's a debatable idea that may pay off.

The drug lord just went to occupy that position with no iota of reform in his head.

Only "subsidy is gone" which he can't even make any meaningful impact from!

As adept as this may seem, it’s still shallow cos there are two sides to a coin.

Systems are made stronger via checks and balances not the length of the president’s tenure. This policy greatly solves the rotation of power problem among the geopolitical zones, which is why I support it 100%.

Local government autonomy (from this month) has fixed the allocation of resources problem we’ve always faced , now let’s fix the power rotation issue
