I know I'm not the only one passing through this. So, MOD, please endeavor to take this to front page for wider viewing and responses.

Me and my co-tenant are using same prepaid meter and we are in band A. I'm not always at home while my neighbor is always home and using big machines for his jobs. He acknowledged the fact he's consuming more. We pay like 100k in a month. While I pay 40k, he pays 50 to 60k but I know I don't use up ti that 40k. We don't always turn on AC and my fridge and AC is low power inverter type. I also have inverter that which i know I can use to economize my usage sometimes.

So, I heard about sub metering but I don't know about it. If you have had similar issues, how did you go about it?

Also, if you know about this sub metering thing, pls help.

Moderator, please do the needful because this issue has caused several fights among tenants and neighbors.

Just maintain the line. Or ask your landlord to split the meter account, so that you could be paying yours.

If your landlord insisted on having no money to do it,you do it and deduct it from rent.

Why will you take it from the rent when you can buy your own meter, register it in your name and it becomes yours so that when you leave, you can take it with you?

@OP, there is no way to calculate how much you power you use at this point, your best bet is to go get your own meter and register it in your name. This becomes yours and you can replicate it if/when you move out. You don't even need the landlords permission for this

We calculate number of units per items we have (tv, fan, iron, etc) and bill each tenants. We contribute money and ask Papi Ebuka to go and pay at NEPA office

Equal contributions from all tenants..

And in your case (and others who are not always around in band A areas), paying light bills when you don't always enjoy it as others because of your busy schedules. You should do one of these;

1) Look for an apartment where everyone is busy with (physical) work. A house where hardly before anyone stays at home. It will help you cut down costs.
2) Discuss with the house owner or caretaker (depends on who is in charge), about you having your own meter (they always agree especially if your explanations are reasonable enough). Then go to NEPA office, get it and have it fixed. The good thing is, it's not a waste because you will still use it when you finally build your house.

However, in all you do, please avoid renting a house where the landlord/lady dwells...

If you can afford 40k bill on a month, then you can afford to get your own prepaid meter. But be aware that prepaid meters are not movable.

Two of you should donate money and buy additional one meter. Price of meter is not up to 100k. But you should discuss with the landlord first

I will advice anyone sharing metre to buy a personal "CHECK METRE". This is not the regular metre, but, a check metre. It measures your energy consumption. Once you know your energy consumption, then, you have the idea of the amount to pay

You can also suggest to the landlord or facility mgt company to install Check metres for all tenants or occupance, thereby, everyone pay for what they consumes while sharing on Metre

Yes, you can calculate your usage by installing sub metering which is called extra and mind you, you cannot take the meter away from the house it was registered in

I may not agree with u on this. My landlord stays in the house am living. The man is one the good person I ever met in my life. Infact he is like a father to me. Somebody that always use is own generator to pump water for the tenant wen thier is power issue. Anytime u called him for any issue he is ready to leave his work and fix it for u. He makes life so easy for his tenants. If he discover that u are using heavy electric consuming things in ur room, he will.go to the extent of changing ur meter to 3phase, so.that it will not giv u any issue.

But the thing is pay his rent wen due.

Meters don't work like this.
You can't remove a meter that has been registered in one residence and put it in another residence.

Sharing meter can be very painful especially if your neighbour is that type that doesn't go out.

I made sure I stopped sharing meter with neighbours I got a meter for only my apartment alone.

Now, I use my light the way I want without the fear of getting finished within 2 weeks

Use a check meter.

The check meter will show exactly what each apartment is using or has used.

@nlreserve

The picture below is what you and your co-tenant needs. The person that introduce me to it called it CHECKED METER. I guess the sub meter nomenclature fits perfectly.

Lets assume both of you have it installed to your respective flats, you will have an agreement to recharge maybe 100k at first , contributed equally on the prepaid meter.

Once connected, you will be able to see the unit you consumed out of the 100k you guys bought. Then you can contribute the exact amount of unit you consumed for the month. Same as your co-tenant. And to cap it all, you can go with it when relocating. It is your property.

No more headaches. You both live happily ever after.

Ha, This won't work with everyone. Imagine me as a banker who leaves home early every morning and come back late just to sleep and prepare for the next day. Even though I have a lot of stuffs, I barely have time to use them and my family isn't even around with me to utilize anything. Well, I don't share meter so it's good. Sometimes, in a shared space, it's just to make sacrifices and contribute or try to stop sharing

I feel your pain op, I was going through this issues for months, landlord said he won’t be responsible for new meter if I apply, I stopped paying light bill but at the end I had to get my personal meter since meter are not movable I plan to sell it off when I leave here, and since I got my meter my neighbor hardly pays for light this shows I’ve been the one paying the most. The height of it was when they couldn’t recharge for days claiming its network meanwhile the whole street was recharging. You need to see the way this people act bossy. Express meter is 150/160 not 200 get yours.
