If you can afford 40k bill on a month, then you can afford to get your own prepaid meter. But be aware that prepaid meters are not movable.

They are movable within district.

Although, Nepa as they are generally called in Nigeria usually frowns at it.

I share prepaid meter with four people including my landlord. We spend only 16k in a month. We are on Band C which is approximately 16 hrs a day

Yes,u can confirm...it was only those old meters that can't be moved.
Depends on your disco.. Here it is tied to your address, it's illegal to move it even across the road

. In my compound, we have one central meter, but everyone has their own card reader .... That means you only pay for the electricity you consume, and you can give the person in charge of the prepaid meter money to recharge your own for you when ever you finish your own units or when ever you want more units....

The card reader is only 10k here in Lagos, but I got my own free from my landlord when I rented where I live now...

Note: the electrician guy who told me 10k likes to inflate prices of things if he is the one buying it o....

This thing might be lower than that

I may not agree with u on this. My landlord stays in the house am living. The man is one the good person I ever met in my life. Infact he is like a father to me. Somebody that always use is own generator to pump water for the tenant wen thier is power issue. Anytime u called him for any issue he is ready to leave his work and fix it for u. He makes life so easy for his tenants. If he discover that u are using heavy electric consuming things in ur room, he will.go to the extent of changing ur meter to 3phase, so.that it will not giv u any issue.

But the thing is pay his rent wen due.

Thank you for this. I am a tenant and in sincerity, my landlord is one of the coolest being I have ever met.
Everybody goes their own way. Pump water with his diesel gen when there is black out and many others. Baba even have a farm that we harvest from in the compound freely.
My neighbour has used up to 13yrs here and this is my 5th year in his house without no issue.
The only thing is pay your house rent when it's due.

All this ppl that always look for houses with no landlords sef, their own too do cuz if they themselves are peaceful being, they should be able to tolerate living others.
The biggest thing is why will a tenant live in a house and frustrate his/her landlord because of reasons unknown and expect to have peace?
Na them Sabi.
I pray they too become a landlord one day and they will see how the table runs.

Just get your own meter, that's the best thing to do.

Why will you take it from the rent when you can buy your own meter, register it in your name and it becomes yours so that when you leave, you can take it with you?

@OP, there is no way to calculate how much you power you use at this point, your best bet is to go get your own meter and register it in your name. This becomes yours and you can replicate it if/when you move out. You don't even need the landlords permission for this

Equal contributions from all tenants..

And in your case (and others who are not always around in band A areas), paying light bills when you don't always enjoy it as others because of your busy schedules. You should do one of these;

1) Look for an apartment where everyone is busy with (physical) work. A house where hardly before anyone stays at home. It will help you cut down costs.
2) Discuss with the house owner or caretaker (depends on who is in charge), about you having your own meter (they always agree especially if your explanations are reasonable enough). Then go to NEPA office, get it and have it fixed. The good thing is, it's not a waste because you will still use it when you finally build your house.

However, in all you do, please avoid renting a house where the landlord/lady dwells...

This is absolutely false.

Everything about your post doesn't make sense.

All this idea of not wanting to live with your landlord...are you crazy ...so person go suffer build house finish, you'll come dey pray make him no reside for the house because you wan rent am

Secondly, finding a house to rent where everybody get work so dat light bill no go go up is hilarious...

Even if na 2 hours some people dey spend in a day for house , if they are wasteful , they are wasteful ...it not by who dey house pass... Most people these days no dey even watch TV anymore, they just charge fone and sleep.

This is one issue that has been bothering my mind for a few months now. Who actually owns the meter - The distribution companies, the landlord or the tenant? This question can to my mind when the meter of one of my neighbour got burnt. Ikeja disco came and evacuated the meter and gave my neighbour two options - Buy a new meter at N150k or be put on estimated billing, which is about 80k a month. The landlord says he was not the one using the meter when it got burnt and so not responsible for replacing it. My neighbour asked that if he pays for the meter will he be allowed to take it if he moves to another location? Ikeja disco says no, that the meter is their property. If the meter is their property, when why collected money from customers?
NERC needs to clarify this meter issue.

There's a kind of meter in the market that measures what each apartment uses. You can use that to measure your consumption and use that to determine what to pay.

People suggesting he should buy a prepaid meter and register in his name are probably Tennants that doesn't even know the process of acquiring a prepaid meter.

The only remedy is to plead with your landlord to get another meter then you share the bill or deduct from your next rent if you're paying for it.

Two of you should donate money and buy additional one meter. Price of meter is not up to 100k. But you should discuss with the landlord first

Price of single phase prepaif meter is 135k, you will also pay for KYC and installations. Getting a meter now together with Installations is high. The landlord should purchase the meter or if the tenant does, calculate total expenses then make agreement with oga landlord for you to use it as rent.

smart meters are not movable, you can only use it at the address it's registered, if you are going to split account, the new account will still be registered in the name of the landlord, while your name can only reflect as the tenant that does the migration to prepaid meter. Even if you go with the meter at the expiration of your tenancy, you can't use the meter elsewhere

Re: Tenants On One Prepaid Meter, How Do You Share Electrity Bills? by Patriotic9ja(m): 7:50am On Oct 03
Point of correction. Your inverter usage doesn't economise electricity consumption. Infact it doubles it. A simple analogy for you..... it's like you having water tank in your house for storage and your neighbour hasn't. It means during normal supply you take more by using and also storing some. So when supply isn't available. Your neighbours will have nothing. While you have stored water as backup for your use.

The only condition where it becomes economical is if you have a solar system in addition. Then your electricity consumption from mains will be reduced.

Your simple and best solution is to have a separate meter......or you play the matured and understanding card by simply maintain status quo without complaining. You can as well renegotiate the sharing formula with your neighbour putting forward your facts

It is very easy, Go to NEPA abi PHCN office and ask them to give you 2 card readers.

They will ask you to pay a certain amount, pay them and get the 2 card readers and they will come and install 1 for you and 1 for your neighbor so anytime the light finishes, you will check the card readers and know each persons consumption.

From there each person will know how much to recharge.

No stress.

Go and implement this and thank me later.
