Get your own meter.

This is pure scam! This issue needs to be litigated all the way to the supreme court. Why ask people to pay for an item and yet claim the item does not belong to you? Is the money paid then a donation?
This is Nigeria

The picture below is what you and your co-tenant needs. The person that introduce me to it called it CHECKED METER. I guess the sub meter nomenclature fits perfectly.

Lets assume both of you have it installed to your respective flats, you will have an agreement to recharge maybe 100k at first , contributed equally on the prepaid meter.

Once connected, you will be able to see the unit you consumed out of the 100k you guys bought. Then you can contribute the exact amount of unit you consumed for the month. Same as your co-tenant. And to cap it all, you can go with it when relocating. It is your property.

No more headaches. You both live happily ever after.

Very good initiative

don’t mind people saying he can take the prepaid meter when he leaves the house, majority of people here are still being fed by their parents and that why they don’t know anything.

You are a dummy.

In Edo, Meters can be moved.

You just have to do transfer , like PVC.

I am seeing that in Ikeja, the policy is different.

Even if you can’t, there is always back door!

I have had this feeling that someone somewhere is trying to scam the whole community in the name of community CDA. The amount was first put at #60,000 then moved to #80,000 for late payment. From 80k to 150k then upward to #285k.

I swear not to pay. We encourage so much scam in Nigeria. All of the community should go to NEPA and seek clarification.

Why will you take it from the rent when you can buy your own meter, register it in your name and it becomes yours so that when you leave, you can take it with you?

@OP, there is no way to calculate how much you power you use at this point, your best bet is to go get your own meter and register it in your name. This becomes yours and you can replicate it if/when you move out. You don't even need the landlords permission for this

He can't use the meter elsewhere when he is leaving.

It is against the Meter issuance terms and condition

E no hard brother. People are using the meter and e dey solve their problem. I want to believe that the two tenants are gentlemen. They just need some sort of understanding

Wow, I didn't know this was possible.
So if you relocate to another location to live, you can take the prepaid meter with you to the new house, connect and continue using it there?

If yes, how much is it now?

So many things need clarification in this country. Another issue bothering me is concerning electricity connection. I built a house for my parent but electricity is yet to get to the area. My parents are staying there and have been managing the small solar installation.

Now while the electric pole is being gradually installed, The community CDA is asking the houses to make payment for the poles and the metal nepa cable that connects the poles before being allowed to connect their houses to the mains. The requested amount from each house is close to #300,000. So I have been wondering who owns the pole and its connecting lines. If it is NEPA, why then do we have to pay that much to connect our house?

Is it not the electricity companies' responsibility to bring their service to the area while the landlords pay for monthly services rendered?

Inform the CDA that there is a Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission's Regulation known as the Third Party Investment in Electricity Distribution Network. This regulation allows individuals or communities to invest in Distribution networks like your community is doing. The advantage is that the Disco is mandated to record the investment as the community's investment and the value. And over time credits the community with units until the amount spent is consumed.
Apply formally so that your investment doesn't just go unaccounted for and ofcourse it will be owned by the Discos.

Depends on your disco.. Here it is tied to your address, it's illegal to move it even across the road

It can be moved but NEPA doesn't like it and would probably confiscate it if you install it .
It also works on your band..so moving it to Band A area would trigger an alert from their end

After paying the N135k, is the meter legally yours?

No.
The meter is owned by the DISCOs, like all other electrical components purchased by communities or individuals..
It's a useless ACT copied from the derelict era of NEPA and PHCN

Good question. It's legally yours but cannot be moved from one location to another. You can only use it in the location you registered it. The process is very annoying to be honest after installation and commissioning.

We are 4 in my compound and before we contribute 3k every month until one werey among us bought ac, washing machine and other using electric cooker. Before these two people enter we've been enjoy 5k for a month not until they enter

We had a meeting to increase the contribution to 5k, ignorant me I accept not knowing he had planned to acquire ac and other high consuming applicanes. The 5k × 4=20k no reach 2weeks again, so he organized another meeting that we should be paying it 5k twice in a month, that's when I boyscout the meeting and told them they should count me out

I pay them 5k every 1st or second of the month, whether it's enough or not na their business and I've maintained that rules for over 7months now till I go move to my own house

Discos are only able to install meters in the name of the owners of the property therefore it is not possible to retrieve an existing meter from a property and move it to another property.

Tenants sharing meters can do any of the following options:
- Apply to separate meters and pay for another meter which the landlord can be notified so he/she pays for the said meter or the tenant pays and the amount is deducted from the rent subject to the tenants and landlord or their agents agreeing to this arrangement - Best but more expensive option
- Install check meters for each apartment connected to the said prepaid meter and so that upon the exhaustion of the tokens loaded, each tenant knows what units/kWh they have used from the initial tokens loaded and then reimburses the purse accordingly when the tokens are exhausted. Least preferred but cheaper option.

Equal contributions from all tenants..

And in your case (and others who are not always around in band A areas), paying light bills when you don't always enjoy it as others because of your busy schedules. You should do one of these;

1) Look for an apartment where everyone is busy with (physical) work. A house where hardly before anyone stays at home. It will help you cut down costs.
2) Discuss with the house owner or caretaker (depends on who is in charge), about you having your own meter (they always agree especially if your explanations are reasonable enough). Then go to NEPA office, get it and have it fixed. The good thing is, it's not a waste because you will still use it when you finally build your house.

However, in all you do, please avoid renting a house where the landlord/lady dwells...
why avoid where landlord stays?

Are you sure if you sure if you disconnect a meter you can use it elsewhere? I don't think. Meter is something that should be provided by the landlord

Two of you should donate money and buy additional one meter. Price of meter is not up to 100k. But you should discuss with the landlord first
