Ofunaofu: How can Emefiele be more competent than Cardoso who owed purchasers of fx $7bn, and there was barely $3bn net in the foreign reserves which could barely cover a month of imports, rather than the customary 4 months? During Emefiele term in office, the official exchange rate was always overvalued while parallel market rate was market reflective. Well connected people would simply buy at the official exchange rate only to resell at the parallel rate. Bankers and the well connected such as Buhari's family made billions from it. The practice is called roundtripping. Lamido Sanusi said that the differential between the official exchange rate and the parallel or black market rate should not be more than 3%. The World Bank said 5% There was a time the official exchange rate was 199 to a dollar while the black market rate was 520. That's more than 150%. The floating of the Naira has reduced the differential to less than 3%. Buhari destroyed the economy. He refused to make any tough decisions and was a hard-core economic illiterate who refused to bend. When a country wastes time making tough economic decisions, you just postpone the evil day, and not stop it. It only grows worse. Why do you think the Par Uromis, the Limdo Sanusiss, Okonjo Iwealas have been rather silent? They know the size of the rot, and how difficult it would be to clear. It took Thailand 5 years to get its GDP back to 1996 levels when it suffered a severe economic crisis. The floating of the Naira has been a success. There are websites now accepting payments in Naira. For instance if you're using WhatsApp Business, it says you can start advertising for N1,600. Prior to this, this amount would have been in Naira. Go to cameo.com and you'd be shocked. You must I make a lot of purchases online. During Buhari era, I went through nightmare buying services online. There was a business I wanted to start online in 2021. It was a YouTube channel that would provide live Covid 19 updates 24/7. I would have made tons of money. The business died because I could not make a payment of about $100 on Fiverr. There was even a time, the max spending limit on my Naira card was $20 amonth until it gradually reduced to zero. There are things Tinubu could have done better, but Buhaŕi is largely at fault. A country like Nigeria in such 4 Likes |

haybhi1: I'm not inferring anything. I've outlined FACTS, one of which is that the CBN maintains a rigged official rate for forex which is different from the free market rate used in the black or parallel market. The price difference is the subsidy. It's all public info. Very easy to understand or maybe not. Another matter, if NNPC is getting forex at the CBN rate to pay Dangote for fuel AND the other fuel marketers can't get that rate, the then fuel market is a monopoly. If NNPC is paying Dangote in naira using fresh printed currency from CBN, then NNPC is a monopoly. Private fuel marketers can't compete against NNPC that has the advantage of such official subsidies. Good Luck to Nigeria. 1 Like |

haybhi1 Love800 I stated that the current system of a MANAGED FLOAT has been in place for a loooong time. It was introduced as part of the SAP programs by President Ibrahim Babangida and his Finance Minister Olu Falae. It was THE FIRST TIME that Nigeria ever had any kind of market reflective rate for forex. Prior to that, the FIXED RATE was determined by administrative order. Not even the CBN, but the Ministry of Finance!!!! It caused all kinds of corruption. The rate was so out of touch with the market that it was profitable to import SAND into Nigeria; that's the same reason it's profitable to import USED CARS and 2nd hand clothing today. Let that sink it...the overvalued naira makes it possible for USED, 2nd hand items to compete and win against NEW domestically made stuff. That's why Nigeria is NOT productive, that's why Nigeria is NOT a good place to do manufacturing, including REFINING PETROL. We shall see if the recent adjustments make a difference...we know they've already caused a substantial rise in exports. For more reading, peruse this important interview given by Olu Falae himself. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/358394-interview-why-sap-was-essential-for-nigerias-economy-olu-falae.html?tztc=1 Without IBB and SAP Nigeria would be an economic dead zone. ALL productive and anyway competitive parts of the economy are those subjected to SAP, anyone can check it. BigIyanga: His point is cogent and sound. A free floating currency will MAKE Nigeria a manufacturing and farming hub and generally a productive nation. A market determined currency value PROMOTES productivity. Indonesia wasn't created by God as a manufacturing hub. Thanks. Good Luck to Nigeria. 1 Like |

BigIyanga: Yes China has some controls on it's currency. China does the opposite of what Nigeria has been doing. Early in its quest for development, China SUPPRESSED the value of it's currency to promote productivity and make its exports competitive, right up to the 2010's. Then it switched to BOOSTING its currency value to promote consumption and compete with the dollar. China wasn't created as an industrial powerhouse, in the 1950's it was poor and suffered massive famines. China BECAME an industrial power by enacting some free market reforms in 1978. I challenge anyone to simply Google with relevant queries and find the USA, Europe, Japan and many other countries complaining BITTERLY about unfair export policy anchored by Chinese suppression of the Yuan. When it comes to currency, the best practice is free float, let a currency find an optimal value. In general, SUPPRESSING a currency value promotes productivity & exports, while BOOSTING a currency promotes consumption. Nigeria has ALWAYS promoted and boosted the naira ABOVE its fundamental value. That is why Nigerian productivity is low and manufactured exports are low. In fact the rigged value of naira is the MAIN factor keeping Nigeria down in poverty. Good Luck to Nigeria. 1 Like |

IbeOkehie:Thanks for the terse exposè. It reveals a lot. I realize so much has been lost through subsidy too. However, I notice you're insistent on the free market, yet it's what the president has fired into our ears everyday he gets the chance. Last Oct 1st, the brunt of his speech is that the country operates on a full-fledged free market. Yet, it remains to be seen what results it will yield. 1 Like |

@IbeOkehie you stylishly dodged @Biglyanga response regarding Nigeria's infrastructural deficit on electricity generation and good roads which are key.... Floating the naira remains a bad policy which will only ruin Nigeria's economy because the root problem which is corruption and looting of public funds within the government has not been addressed. No genuine progress can be made when corrupt, selfish, greedy and incompetent people are occupying sensitive public offices.... IbeOkehie: |

Re: Why We Floated The Naira – Cardoso by IbeOkehie: 12:41am On Oct 08, 2024 |
Bebigiby1: No dodge. 1) Mains electricity supply is low and unstable because the entire sector is controlled, dominated and majorly owned by government. The Germans have been trying to help since around 2016, to no avail. Because the government doesn't want a free market system. 2) Roads - do you know its ILLEGAL to export granite from Nigeria since the 1970's? The reason given when the law was made is that Nigeria needs all its granite to build roads, which are badly needed for development. Roads are owned by government. 3) Railways - Where is Oga Gerrard? The Chinese have helped Nigeria to build a new rail network. ALL railways in Nigeria are owned by government and here's what's happening with it - https://nairametrics.com/2024/09/29/fg-orders-probe-into-ticket-racketeering-allegations-on-abuja-kaduna-rail-route/ https://hallmarknews.com/massive-corruption-rocks-railways-ticketing-system/ https://businessday.ng/transport/article/nigeria-rail-stutters-on-passenger-decline-rising-dollar-debt/ Basically, the ONLY WAY to make Nigeria productive and developed is to adopt a classical neo-liberal, free market and capitalist political-economy. Note the POLITICAL. Because the ingredients of a highly developed nation are KNOWN, it's no longer a secret. They are ECONOMIC-POLITICAL factors as follows - *demographic homogeneity, *democracy, *free markets and *property rights. The more of these FOUR factors are present in a country, the more LIKELY it is to be highly developed and prosperous. For example, Nigeria could CREATE more homogeneity by creating TRIBAL BASED states and giving each a HIGH DEGREE OF AUTONOMY. Nigeria could bestow PROPERTY RIGHTS by repealing the Land Use Act and give lands back to the people. Nigeria could ABOLISH the Central Bank and adopt bitcoin as official currency, thus eliminating INFLATION. Here's a convo between Oga Gerrard and myself that summarizes what I've outlined above. https://www.nairaland.com/8182619/cant-believe-got-whole-324k/4#131474779 That's it. The problem of Nigeria is NOT corruption, poor infrastructure, low IQ, Western or White Imperialism or anything. People say Western Sanctions have hurt the Zimbabwean economy, true but...Nigeria is NOT under ANY sanctions and yet it's the Poverty Capital of the World. Nor will Germany, China, Aliens from Pluto or Eskimoes or Singapore ever help Nigeria develop. The ONLY way for Nigeria to develop is to give its people FREEDOM, political & economic freedom. That's all. But we know Black Africans will NEVER allow their own people to be free. I mean these are the tribes that sold their own brethren into slavery. That about says it all. Good Luck to Nigeria. |
Re: Why We Floated The Naira – Cardoso by IbeOkehie: 12:53am On Oct 08, 2024 |
haybhi1: Yes, but it will still be a futile effort until there's COMPLETE AND UNFETTERED FREEDOM. In economics there are four factors of production - Land - in Nigeria all land is owned by government. Labour - the price of labour is regulated by government and indeed government is a major employer. Capital - Nigerian currency value is regulated by government. Until these factors are COMPLETELY controlled by the private sector, Nigeria will not prosper and develop. I know it's very unlikely to happen, so there you are, Nigeria is condemned to perpetual poverty. So yes I commend President Tinubu. I appreciate his efforts while always noting that the same Tinubu caused all the problems he's trying to fix. The problem though is that the policies reforms are superficial, they are not ALL ENCOMPASSING, they don't go to the BASICS of the political economy. Take LAND, why is it that an individual can't OWN land in Nigeria? This is a BASIC building block of economic prosperity!!! If indeed President Tinubu is serious, he MUST tackle that one issue. Another thing is price regulation. There should be a Constitutional Amendment that prohibits government from setting or regulating ANY prices of anything or any service in Nigeria. These are BASIC, BASIC things. Anyway I hope you get the thrust of my thinking. Good Luck to Nigeria. 1 Like |

I am not an economist, we can continue to massage your hypothesis, play around with economic theories and comparative analysis but the bottom line is that when goods are outrageously expensive and the purchasing power of majority of the people (Nigerians) is low, the economy, commercial activities and trade will be affected negatively. Floating the naira without a condusive environment for production and manufacturing to thrive is a waste of time and a recipe for disaster.... I understand your point regarding the long term benefit of a totally free economy without government interference but we must learn to crawl before we can walk, you don't build a free market over night without a solid foundation, massive corruption and systemic looting within federal government MDAs, stable electricity supply, high rate of insecurity and good transportation network (Roads, Rail...) are issues that must be thoroughly addressed before you can implement an all encompassing reform such as the floating of the Naira. This is why Tinubu and Cardoso need to eat the humble pie and accept the fact that their currency floatation policy has failed, it is not helping the economy but making it worse. I don't expect much from this APC government because it is run by selfish corrupt and incompetent people starting with the president, just as you said they are not ready to let the people to be free.... In my opinion, the way forward for a serious government will be to immediately reverse the failed currency floatation policy and peg the naira to N400 to $1 to stabilize the economy to stop ongoing massive job losses and shut down of manufacturing businesses that rely on FX, work with Dangote refinery within 1 month to crash the price of petroleum products particularly fuel to N500 per litre, fix one national refinery (PH Refinery) to augment and compete with Dangote refinery within 3 months to further crash fuel price, declare state of emergency on electricity by breaking up AEDC, BEDC et al to fully deregulate both power generation and power distribution sectors to allow easy entry for investors to come in and compete with existing power companies (this new power deregulation policy can be fine tuned and fast tracked by a serious national assembly), finally sack and replace all incompetent security chiefs, deploy the nation's full military might to combat insecurity all over the country by declaring war on all terrorists, herdsmen and criminals killing Nigerians with a mandate to the newly appointed generals to flush them out within a month. All these can be done to improve Nigeria's situation if we have the right people in government but unfortunately we don't.... The best I can hope for now is for Cardoso and his boss to reverse the policies killing Nigerians.... As for implementing other points I raised, we may have to wait till they are removed from power..... Nigerians need to eat and be alive first before your "classical neo-liberal, free market and capitalist political-economy" IbeOkehie: |
Re: Why We Floated The Naira – Cardoso by IbeOkehie: 3:11am On Oct 08, 2024 |
Bebigiby1: The Nigerian PEOPLE are completely responsible for everything that Nigeria has become. The leaders come from the people who voted for them. In 2015 the Nigerian PEOPLE voted for a feudal-socialist party that told the "fuel subsidy doesn't exist" and promised all kinds of social welfare goodies AND rolled back free market reforms in education, electricity and fuel. Yes, APC delivered....at a painful cost. Nigeria is a socialist country. Imagine a country where government PAYS FOR PILGRIMAGE Nigeria has been operating a socialist economy for so long THE PEOPLE have forgotten what it is to be free, to be responsible for your own fate, to strive and enjoy rewards and fail and try again. Government ownership and control of the economy has reduced Nigeria to the Poverty Capital of the World and THE PEOPLE still don't want to try the right thing that has been PROVEN to work even in Nigeria. Now that's masochism writ large, for real. IBB tried to set Nigeria on the right path, he was vilified. PDP under OBJ and Jonathan tried, they were cursed and rejected. The sectors reformed under IBB, OBJ and Jonathan...cocoa, cement, telecoms, airlines, banking...are the most efficient industries in Nigeria. The most profitable company in Nigerian history is NLNG established by IBB and endowed with a PRIVATE SECTOR ownership. Well let them carry on. Nigerians must be alive abi? Let them live on. Good Luck to Nigeria. 1 Like |
