Someone earning $700 in the US per month will struggle to pay rent, bills, take care of family and will not have a work-life balance.

thank God you mention security. But you didnt mention value for money, life expectancy, health insurance, a workin society, future of children. Many Nigerians travel not just for shelter and food but for the future of their children i know some persons who are very well to do in Nigeria and have relocated abroad for the future of their children. I see your points in the post you made but there are many sides to this japa matter.

The sad part is majority of those resigned are still earning salaries in Nigeria while they live abroad.

The space they "left" should have been available for another Nigeria to fill but through greediness they keep the role while they share the salaries with their bosses, who gave them protection.

I knew a guy that flew in from Canada to write promotion exam and flew back to Canada second day.

Some people have made this assertion about most of those who seems to have left their work to Japa still corruptly remain on the employment list of the fg and continue to receive their salaries in conjunction with their bosses in the office.

I work in a lucrative parastatal too. Most of the people living for abroad (japa) are southerners ..

The northers in my office will just work their way back to Abuja from Lagos

CBN even picked some of our guys . Those guys have relocated to Canada today

No norther has resigned since I joined the company

Good morning ladies and gentlemen, this article is based on my personal experience.

I work with a High profile federal government parastatal with good remuneration.

We were 100 that was employed in 2013 drawing from South and North.
We have been promoted 3 times and expecting another promotion.

But something is disturbing me as a Southerner from South East.
About 25 persons from my set have resigned and relocated abroad. Only 2 are still in Nigeria.

It is more shocking that this 25 persons are all from the South. Either South West or South East or South South.

My fear is the implications when our set will get to the pick.
No northerner had resigned or thinking of resigning as at today.

The future implications is that they will occupy majority of the apex positions in this parastatal and the south will start shouting marginalization and why all top directors are from the north.

The last meeting I had at the NNPCL Head quarter's Abuja saw 99% of Top Management Staff from the north.

During The introduction of members I was shaking my head. This bring me to ask, could this issue I am experiencing in my own organization be the same in NNPCL?

Currently a Lady I know in NNPCL resigned and moved to Canada. You already know the future implications to the South when her set will get to the top.

Why are Southerners relocating and leaving their beautiful jobs why the northerners are comfortably enjoying the same work.

Is this greed on the south or that our problems are too much?

I taunt my friend from sokoto some days ago why he doesn't want to japa, he laughed and answered me, to do what over there?

Why are the southerners the only people who sees reasons to japa?

The value of money is what money can buy . Can you kindly tell us what that your lucrative salary can buy given the present economic situation in Nigeria? Also tell us how many kids and dependant you have?

Even the blind knows that our country is not healthy...your salary cannot save you ...except you get lots of kick backs you cannot survive here with your salary. Just yesterday ...I spent 50k on prepaid units that will last 2weeks ......this is just for 2wrrks electricity...I have never talked about fueling my car ...feeding is no go area . Let's stop pretending all is well . Anyone with the opportunity shoukd leave for a better opportunity for your kids ...The health implication of staying in thus country is enough reason to japa. I have heard alot about replacement opportunity in govt establishment...they use quota system or federal character to recruit people ...if people from South are resigning...they should do the needful by replacing them with people from South to nslance the equation...this shouldn't be a thing a serous minded person should bother his head on . My sister was earning averagely in Nigeria, then she traveled last year with her family. Almost every month she sends the equivalent of her 3 months salary in Nigeria. She has paid back the money she borrowed.

She was doing multiple side hustles in Nigeria before she left, the thing is if someone working in Lagos with the stress level goes abroad with the same working output, the person gains more. Nigerians are hard working and the motivation of money brings the best in us... Abroad offers such motivation.

You are wrong bro. My uncle gave over 2,000 southerners Job during his time because he got to the top. I am a beneficiary.
Another of his beneficiary was just appointed permanent secretary recently.
He has started giving southerners Job too.
The problem is us not the northerners.
Imagine having 30 people climb up the ladder and 7 of them are Southerners, it will still be good because 7 southerners will get Job but if among the 30 no southerner, the FG can not appoint a junior southerner when there are seniors from the north. Never.

My uncle gave people Job in many government agencies and parastatals. Some are DPOs, Controllers both in immigration and customs, some are Captains in Army, navy and Air Force. They are climbing with their set, if they remain till their pick, one of them must join the top ladder because federal character is still being used where you have personnel across the geopolitical regions.
Greed is stopping us from taking what belongs to us.

Southern Nigeria have been celebrated globally for their intelligence and expertise but not in their own country....


Highly qualified individuals are refused jobs and even promotion...


Many times that same government parastatal has issued several mass vacancies the outcome of which the Nigerian populace knows nothing about till today....

Even the operation of the parastatal is shrouded in confusion and murky outcomes...

Those that japa have seen the handwriting on the wall and are adjusting appropriately.

There is no way you will have your own among the top echelons and whether a replacement or recruitment will not come your side through your own.
Lets consider the future implications as I enumerated above.

It's very true.

Most of them are still earning salaries for years. They exploit the gap in our processes. If Government wants to weed them out, they cannot rely on their bosses to get to know those who are doing such. Their bosses are compromised.

Just tell them to be doing fingerprinting at the end of each week or each month, then you will realise how a lot of these ghost workers would be weeded out. Now the Govt should calculate how much they have "stolen" in salaries, tie it up to their passport number. As they are landing, get them arrested or ask them to pay the full amount with interest.

Robust apps can be developed for this.

You cannot get away with these with the US government.

One of my Boss son abandoned school in UK and get into drugs. He is serving jail term in UK prison.

You gave only 2 examples, what about the other 30 that did well abroad? every child that relocated abroad will not become gay, lesbian or a drug addict, there are gays lesbians and drug addicts in Naigeeria also. So park that example. Try another reasonable example.


These people you mentioned has the tendency already to become whatever they became abroad even before they left Naigeeria. The UK or US didn't turn them gay or drug addicts.

I don't know how old you are but let Me start by asking you if all those employed by the organization where you work are all employed based on merit north and south. Where all employed based on merit?

See my dear, a structure built on quota is built on a faulty foundation. No where on earth where people want good results or returns on investment is such philosophy ever contemplated talkless of making it a national benchmark in civil administration.

Your observation is right. Southerners love to Japa. But in the north, it is not their thing to do so.

I was working in a teaching hospital for close to 11 years, before I Japa. My pension I accumulated in those 11 years was about 4.5million.
To tell you how corrupt our system is I am still receiving SMS messages from my pension manager despite resigning almost 3 years ago. The pension is now about 7 million naira.

This 7 million naira is the amount I make now in 2 months and sometimes even more.

So tell me, why won't I Japa knowing I am securing the future of my kids.
