I think there's a misconception out there among our people that if do 9 to 5, you can never really be successful like the average businessman. It is on that premise the whole talk about getting paid 12times a year being a bad thing came from.

There are enough number of big boys on LinkedIn that made very good money from just doing 9-5. They can easily buy any choice property in any location they decide in the country. Boys that worked in foreign operations and treasury departments of financial institutions that made money trading and their salary still dey there.

The apprentice gets settled after years of servitude and starts "business" on his own. There's no guarantee this new businessman will have a better life financially like his friend who got a job as a chemical engineer in an IOC.

As for the contract chasing businessmen, we all know the drill. Most of them will not be as rich as they seem on paper had it not been that we have a very high tolerance for corruption in this country. Contractor wey no agree construct standard road go dey do Thanksgiving for church on 31st December about how God has lifted him this year 🤦‍♂️

He came to scort with one of his distant uncles In Lagos after school to start searching for jobs after NYSC in the east. He said the first child naming ceremony he did, he used the money gained from the ceremony to write a professional exam. That cat alone positioned him for greater things.

The former MD of First Bank na someone I knew from a distance from his days at Arthur Andersen and I had an idea of where he came from. His background was very humble, there are some of his peers growing up that are drivers and mechanics till today but he was brilliant, he got admission to UI studied Vet medicine, got into banking, into Arthur Andersen, Citibank, IFC FBN and later became the MD of the biggest bank in Nigeria
Basically from a random poor boy to the top of the financial industry in Naija

She also mentioned how the Kidnappers kept reminding them that anybody whose relatives don't cooperate will be killed without much issues.
