Nigeria’s Super Eagles moved up from 39th to 36th position in the latest FIFA men’s world ranking.

The latest world ranking was released today (Thursday, October 24) and published on FIFA’s website.

In Africa, the Super Eagles also moved up, as they climbed from sixth to fourth position.

The Eagles are behind Morocco, who are Africa’s highest ranked team in 13th place in the world, Senegal (20th) and Egypt(30th).

Benin Republic, who will host the Eagles on matchday 5 in Group D of the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, dropped to 95 position in the ranking.

Matchday 6 opponent in the AFCON qualifiers, Rwanda, moved up in the latest ranking to 126, while Libya dropped to 122.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have emerged as one of the biggest winners, climbing three places globally to 36th position under interim manager Augustine Eguavoen, solidifying their place among Africa's top five nations.

Algeria's improvement has been equally noteworthy, rising four spots to 37th in the global rankings, while Senegal maintains their position as one of Africa's elite teams.

Morocco remain number one in Africa.
However, the rankings have brought sobering news for African champions Côte d'Ivoire, who have dropped seven places in the world to 40th position, now sitting sixth in the continental hierarchy.

This significant decline comes at a crucial time for the Elephants who only recently lifted their third AFCON title.

Tunisia's position has seen an even more dramatic decline, falling 11 places to 47th globally and seventh in Africa, marking one of the most substantial drops in this ranking period.

In contrast, Cameroon have shown resilience by climbing four places to 49th globally, maintaining their position in Africa's top eight.

Mali (54th) and DR Congo (57th, up one spot) round out Africa's top 10, demonstrating the continued competitiveness of West and Central African nations at the continental level.

The rankings reflect a period of significant change in African football, with traditional giants facing challenges from emerging forces.

The movement within the top 10 suggests an increasingly competitive landscape in African football, particularly as nations prepare for upcoming competitions including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Lower-ranked nations have also made notable strides, with Comoros and Sudan both climbing 10 places after impressive victories over higher-ranked opponents in recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Botswana are the biggest movers.
Botswana recorded the biggest points gain in this ranking period, highlighting the growing competitiveness across all levels of African football.

These changes in the rankings come during a busy period that saw 175 international matches played in October, including 47 Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifiers.

I read that the Arab North Africans have come together to support Libya in their case with Nigeria.
Part of the reason CAF is dilly dallying on taking appropriate sanctions against Libya. They have even threatened to go against the reelection ambitions of the current CAF President from South Africa.

What is the CAF decision regarding the Super Eagles and Libya situation? We all need to keep tab on the issue - it must not be allowed to be swept under the carpet! Those barbaric Libyans must be sanctioned for their primitive behavior.

A whole Nations Cup winner dropped to no.6 in the continent. That's how low FiFA rates AFCON

The federal government of Nigeria must wade in then to ensure that justice is served. Libya must not escape the consequences of their barbaric actions;they must be punished! Those Arab terrorists must be made to understand that there is no place for terrorism in football. Nigerian government must be on top of that issue with a view to seeing that Libya is punished for how they treated our players.

Nigeria can quickly rally other west African FAs for supports and they all can threaten to withdraw their membership from CAF if the Africa's apex football authority fails to sanction Libya for the offence committed against the Super Eagles.

I hate those Arabs;they think they are special!

We used to have WAFU. That's The West African Football Union. That organisation is no more as effective as it used to be in the 80s and the 90s. It should have been the rallying point for this kind of defence and interest aggregation from West Africa. The North Africans have been doing exactly the same thing since the days of Hayatou. Other Africans should have started to push back earlier than now.

It doesn't work like that.

What was their position (points accrued) before winning the afcon?

How many matches have they won (additional points) since winning the afcon?

It's a point based system, if winning Afcon is accrued 300pts and you had 200pts while number 1 ranking had 600pts

No 1 ranking will still be ahead of you even without playing any game
