Israel's parliament has passed legislation that could restrict the main UN agency providing aid to people in Gaza.

The new laws designate UNRWA a terrorist organisation, cutting diplomatic ties with the agency and barring it from operating on Israeli soil.

The two bills prohibit ties between Israeli officials and the agency, and strips its staff of their legal immunities.

They ban UNRWA from conducting "any activity" or providing any service inside Israel.

The legislation, which would not take effect immediately, risks collapsing the fragile aid distribution process at a moment when the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is worsening and Israel is under increased US pressure to ramp up aid.

The vote passed 92-10 and followed a fiery debate between supporters of the law and its opponents, mostly members of Arab parliamentary parties.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said UNRWA workers must be held accountable for what he called their "terrorist activities" against the country.

He also said sustained humanitarian aid must remain available in Gaza "now and in the future".

Israel accuses UNRWA of ties to Hamas
Taken together, these bills would signal a new low in relations between Israel and UNRWA, which Israel accuses of maintaining close ties with Hamas militants.

Australia and the US were among countries that paused funding for UNRWA this year after it was revealed members of staff were involved in the October 7 attack.

UNRWA terminated the contracts of 10 of the 12 people accused and a subsequent review found no evidence to support Israel’s accusation that 450 UNRWA staff were military operatives in Gaza terrorist groups.

The changes would also be a serious blow to the agency and to Palestinians in Gaza who have become reliant upon it for aid throughout more than a year of devastating war.

The bills risk crippling the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

More than 1.9 million Palestinians are displaced from their homes and Gaza faces widespread shortages of food, water and medicine.

Israel has alleged that some of UNRWA's thousands of staff members participated in the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks that sparked the war in Gaza.

The attack left about 1,200 people dead, with about 250 hostages taken back to Gaza.

In retaliation, Israel's invasion of Gaza has killed more than 42,000 people, according to local health authorities.

The Australian government considers Hamas to be a terrorist organisation.

US has deep concern over ban
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said UNRWA played an "irreplaceable role right now in Gaza" and that the US had raised concerns with the Israeli government.

"So we have made quite clear to the government of Israel that we are deeply concerned by this," he said.

"Passage of this legislation could have implications under US law and US policy that remains the case.

"Look, UNWRA plays a critical, important role in delivering humanitarian assistance to civilians that need it in Gaza.

"That's not the only role they play. They play an important role providing services to Palestinians in the West Bank and throughout the region as well.

"But they really play an irreplaceable role right now in Gaza, where they are on the front lines getting humanitarian assistance to the people that need it."

Folks here can't seriously expect Israel to cozy up to an organization infested with terrorists. Most Hamas terrorists are UNRWA relief officials, and some even took part in the October 7 attack.

On top of that, Hamas has always used UNRWA buildings as a launchpad for attacks on Israel. So, no one's buying their crocodile tears.

I am the most excited human on earth today. I just read that Israel is planning another attack on Iran. They said the Oct 26th attack was in response to Oct 1st attack and now they are planning a second attack on Iran for an attack against their PM, Natanyahu. And my joy was full when Iran foolishly said they will respond after discovering that Israel Oct 26 attack on them was huge. This Islamic idiot don’t even have sense at all. Been praying for this. Bc how can Israel allow that useless supreme leader still breathing. E pain me o no be small. Thank God they have waken up to effect that reality.

For those crying and saying rubbish, that without the American Israel will be destroyed. Now let me give you Islamic buffoons little history:
1. Israel and America entered into alliance in 1978. That was the year America started giving Israel financial and military aid and Israel in return started supporting America with innoventions, technology and intelligence.
2. Israel gained independence in 1948, 30 years before they entered into alliance with the Americans
3. The whole Arab nations ganged up to fight Israel in 1948 and Israel without America defeated all of them.
3. The Suez war (1958) with Egypt. Israel won without America in the equation
4. The 6 days war (1967). The whole Arab again fought Israel and in Just 6 days, Israel defeated all of them. This is without any weapon coming out from America or Europe to Israel.
5. War of Attrition (1970). Again Israel defeated Egypt all alone.
6. Yom Kippur war (1973). Again Israel defeated Egypt and Syria all alone.

It was in 1978 that Israel decided to enter into alliance with US for financial and military support. And the reason is simple, wars are expensive and building high quality military arsenals are very expensive. Israel is not just a small country but a tiny one at that. They don’t have that financial capability to develop such weaponry but they have they innoventions and technology to develop huge arsenals. No country can even developed all weaponry not even Russia or China. Secondly, US don’t want Israel to be close to Russia. Bc Israel and Russia has good relationship before which include purchase of military weapons from Russia. So US has no option than to accept such alliance. US can never do anything that is not of her interest including alliance with Israel or Saudi Arabia. Bc it’s same alliance they have with Israel they do with Saudi Arabia the only different is that Saudi Arabia is a big country and has lots of lots of money.

I support Israel on this. A Neutral private contractor from Norway or Sweden should be given the job of distributing humanitarian aid in Gaza.

UN peace keepers couldn't even maintain peace in the boundary between Lebanon and Israel. Over the years they allow Hezbollah to move very close to the border despite buffer zone created by UN itself.

Their work in North East Nigeria especially Borno State should also be investigated

US 'deeply concerned' by Israel's legislation to ban Unrwa, state department says

If the State of Israel has iron-clad evidence to show that as many as 80 percent of the UNRWA local staff took part in the infamous October 7, 2023 terror attacks on Southern Israel, then they can bring up all the evidence. Based off of the current situation in Gaza and the entire Middle East, there's NO doubt that some infiltrators and terrorist sympathizers (who should be isolated) have partial or full ties with the ORIGINALLY noble work of the United Nations in providing relief materials to those who genuinely and desperately need them in Gaza.

However, it must be emphasized here and now that a vast number of staff of United Nations agencies globally are humanists and NOT terrorists or terrorists sympathizers. Period.
