Your airport experience is a big lie! In all my years of traveling to Nigeria I have never witnessed, seen or experienced travelers slipping cash to officers to skip the line. So many airport lies against our custom officers are so terrible...Omo, naija people!
Same here. I came around in July, the Airport staff showed good professionalism.

Can you imagine? Someone came to his ancestral homeland on vacation to rest after months of hustle and should now spend the bulk of his vacation budget on family support?

What sort of mindset is that? So his own destiny is like that of a machine to just work to support others and die slowly? grin

I am currently battling health issues because of relatives who have mindset like that of that idiotic idiota I replied to. People are never full, they always want more and when you don't have it to give they label you.

It took me 1 year of acute depression and spending time at a psychiatric home before I stopped giving a damn. If you like blackmail me from now till tomorrow, it won't move me.

Thanks for this piece. Also planning to visit Nigeria this December but people around me keep saying I should avoid Nigeria for now due to security issues. Did you get a family member or friend to pick you up at the airport? How risky is it to pick a taxi from the airport to the hotel?Hmm

What security issues? All the flights to Nigeria in December are all fully booked with both Nigerians and foreigners. Stop listening to all this people without papers always trying to discourage people from visiting home.

That is the story of many Nigerians abroad. Prioritize yourself as partying never stop in Nigeria even during Abacha's time. Have a specific budget for charity (only if that works for you), and only give out what won't affect your personal plans. Those are my rules and no amount of emotional blackmail can move me anymore, that stage is gone forever.

If someone needs money desperately he should reach out to his local government chairman, state house of assembly, federal rep, senator, commissioner, governor, minister, special assistants etc, the list is long. He should find someone to help.

I agree with you on this. All the travellers ensure everyone remain in check until it is your turn to have your document stamped. Yeah customs and all get to be overly friendly because they require tips (tips also happen abroad just that it is not generally expected from officials) . Overall Nigeria is still home

When you land in Nigeria you start wondering where people get all these security issue stories from. Every country has its bad spots, understand the bad spots in Nigeria and you will be fine. Each time I'm in Nigeria, I see lots of Oyinbos around even in less expensive hotels. If Oyinbos are comfortable staying in your homeland, what is your excuse for a short vacation?

On airport pickup, yes Taxis are safe and they are registered with the airport. Take additional security measures if you are not getting picked up by family. Take pictures of the taxi, the plate number, and take picture with the driver. I make sure I'm friendly and I chat them up throughout the trip, and jokingly let them know that if something happens to me the entire Nigeria military will be on their family within a few hours. Never agree to your driver stopping to pee and keep them engaged so they don't make phone calls. Those are just extra steps and may not be necessary with Airport taxis but no security measure is too much.

I also turn on my navigation app (google map is fine), and key in the hotel address to give me the good routes so I can at least make sure we are always on track.

Thanks you so much for this. My MTN line has also been blocked. How do I access Internet immediately at least to use WhatsApp call?

The challenge is not that people prioritize foreign wars over native for instance. 6 yards of Ankara and the cost of sewing a is way higher.

On the small jobs, the challenge is that the wage is usually too meager with difficult working conditions coupled with the high price of living. Thus, it makes no sense laboring and not being able to feed well in the least

I've been in that situation, and that means spending more money in most cases. My phone company has international plan with specific roaming rate which is higher than normal rate. I use that sparingly when my MTN acts up. Give your phone company a call and tell them your plan, they will let you know your options for international travel and especially, your specific intended destination.

You are right. Most of our people at the airport are very professional or at least, pretend to be, when eyes are on them. Things have significantly improved on that aspect over the years. Unless you have personal issues relating with people, it's hard to have issues with those airport staff nowadays.

Exactly. I was in naija couple of months back and it was smooth sailing... It's normal to hear officers saying "Oga, wetin you bring for us na?" Here, if you like give tips, if you like just smile and waka go. Tips no be requirement and no be by force. I could give tips but na $s I carry...I don't play with my $s o cheesy

My wife was in Nigeria two weeks ago and I asked her if she felt the urge to stay back, she reverted with a bombastic side eye. It's not easy oversea but you can't help but appreciate the fact that life is more decent

Sure...life abroad is not a piece of cake. But if you preserve and follow the process you will be fine.Abroad there is something for everyone there are incentives that makes life easy for the less earners from government pay cheques, shelter allowance, cheap bus cards, food banks etc when you're come abroad you wonder who cursed Nigeria as a nation and Africa as a continent.
nah its Nigeria alone. Many Africa countries are doing quite well for themselves. Even Ethiopia is now better than Nigeria

What do you mean by customer-facing jobs?
Shikena:
You are spot on about Nigeria and we share similar mindset. I see jobs everywhere but Nigerians don't see them as jobs. Examples abound including those hardworking youths in malls, hotels, lounges, farms, airports, telecoms outlets, cash transfer etc. Many of them have landed great life changing opportunities just by being visible while working those low pay customer-facing jobs.
