What Is The Origin Of The Name Yoruba by lawani: 5:10pm On Sep 24 |
Origin of the word Yoruba. The word is of Islamic origin in Mali. It means people who.have a high civilization without having religion. It was used to describe people of the Oyo empire but it would have included IJESA, Ijebu and etc in Mali because they would not have been able to tell.the difference. The word was in my opinion gotten from Europa meaning Europe because Europe was a region that was civilized without submitting to Allah. It came to be used by Malian Muslims for Yoruba people because they were the same way. Europa originally meant west of Phoenicia. It was a Phoenician word. Europe is west of Phoenicia. 1 Like |

From the first sentence, you can tell that this is absolute hogwash because Yoruba are historically known to be very religious with their steadfast belief in juju. The word yoruba was coined by Oduduwa after a fight with Angel Michael over the smell of Iru in heaven. The archangel, enraged by the combined dirtiness and offensive odour, grabbed Oduduwa and kicked him down to earth and he landed in Ile Ife, screaming "nitori iru ba?!" all the way down, which translates to "is it because of iru?". This scream was heard all the way of his fall from heaven to hell (Ile Ife) and it echoed all over the earth as 'toriruba and riruba. The echo was mistranslated as Yaruba, Yaribah and later Yoruba. |

1Sharon:I don't know the root word in Arabic. My post said it originally was Europa which meant west of Phoenician. The Phoenician language can be described as the ancestor of Arabic |

I found this article online regarding Yoruba culture The Yoruba people, predominantly found in southwestern Nigeria, are one of the largest ethnic groups in Africa, with a population exceeding 40 million. The Yoruba cultural heritage is woven with elements of history, language, religion, art, music, and social structures that provide a fascinating insight into their way of life.
