Lagos government demolishes 138 shanties where tenants pay N100k annual rent

The Lagos State Government has demolished some shanties in Ajao Estate Canal bank, where tenants pay N100,000 annual rent.

This was made known in a statement by the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared on X.com on Friday.

Wahab wrote, “In continuation of concerted measures to reduce the scourge of environmental infractions and illegal encampment in public spaces, the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) popularly known as KAI on Thursday demolished 138 shanties around the canal bank in Ajao Estate Canal where illegal occupants pays between N60,000 to N100,000 rent.”

It was reported in May that Wahab said the government discovered an apartment under the Dolphin Estate Bridge, Ikoyi, where tenants paid N250,000 annual rent.

According to the commissioner, the under-bridge apartment had 86 partitioned rooms, sized “10×10 and 12×10”.

Also earlier this week, no fewer than 94 social miscreants who have converted the rail tracks into their sleeping quarters have been arrested by operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce.

The miscreants were arrested during an enforcement operations conducted along Pen Cinema and Fagba railway corridor.

Officials said the operations were aimed at dislodging illegal occupants of the rail tracks who have also built shanties along the railway corridor.

Akerele disclosed that the action was necessary to provide residents around Fagba, Agege, and Pen Cinema railway routes a reprieve after series of complaints concerning the activities of criminal elements residing there.

He said the miscreants had shown a blatant disregard for the state’s environmental and sanitary laws.

The chairman further noted that the presence of squatters along the rail corridor was not only unhealthy but also hazardous.

He issued a warning to the ejected squatters not to return to the rail corridor, which was designed solely for the passage of trains.

Some of the recalcitrant squatters attempted to resist the Agency’s actions.

Akerele assured residents in Fagba, Agege, Pen Cinema, its environs, and train passengers that adequate patrols and regular surveillance would be carried out along the corridor to ensure that no squatters return to erect any shanties in the future.

He pledged to arrest and prosecute any individual or group attempting to return to the site.

Government should have provided an alternative for them, that's what they do in saner climes. All governors in Nigeria are guilty of this. You see them destroying markets without another provision for the traders for their daily bread. The new Edo state governor came and disbanded agberos (they disbanded the state police aka ESSN/vigilante before the election) without any placement even if temporary. Both the VGN and tax collectors aka agberos (we all know these are usually the criminal elements in every society even in the UK/US) are at home now. With the yuletide season in view, unbelievable/unreasonable increase in price everywhere, naira devaluation, etc. I can only help but pity law abiding and the vulnerable citizens around...

Provide alternative for those who don't have any business being in Lagos in the first place ?
What's stopping them from renting an apartment like every other person?
Why can't they rent face me I slap you?

How can a sane person rent a shanty, paying 100k per annum?
How can a sane person rent a partitioned rooms under the bridge in Falomo , paying over 250 k per annum?
How can a sane person build shanties close to the rail lines ?

Must they live in Lagos ?

Why is everything Nigeria does chaotic?
This is not the way to clear these buildings.

They should have cleared and arrested anyone there the day before.
Cordoned it off then set Up a patrol to watch over the area and then cleared it the next day AM.

Too much chaos which makes it more likely someone will get hurt.

This is not how government is supposed to work.

Then it becomes a matter of equity.
You provide benefits for people who broke the law, what about those who chose not to?

Reason for the demolition could be either because some investors or one baba olowo has paid for land in those affected places or those shanties provide cover for armed robbers, urchins and trouble makers in the community

..I don't like this type of thing.

At least give them a year to look for another place. The country is too hard and harsh at the moment to put people like this on the street.

First do partial demolition and tell them to leave if you come back and meet them there. When they see the partial demolition They will know you are serious.
