The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court in Abuja has ordered the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to pay N30 million to Gloria Okolie, who was arrested in 2021 on the allegations of being a spy for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN), for the abuse and enslavement she underwent.

Justice Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves, sitting in the ECOWAS Court on Thursday, stated that Okolie was unfairly detained beyond 60 days, which is the legally admissible period of detention for a capital offence following her arrest by the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the police.

The IRT detained Okolie, who was 21 years old at the time, for 248 days and made her serve as a maid in detention.

Samuel Ihensekhien Jr., counsel to Okolie, told FIJ on Thursday that the federal government of Nigeria admitted to detaining Okolie for more than 90 days illegally, a breach of all statutes known to law, treaty, the Nigerian constitution and any legal framework.

Ihensekhien Jr. said that besides the N30 million charges awarded against the NPF, the court also mandated the federal government to pay one million to the 24-year-old Okolie due to its nonchalant and disdainful attitude in court. The court held that the federal government delayed the proceedings and hearing of the case because it refused to file a court process.

Besides this, there is also a local judgment from the local High Court that has also awarded her the sum of N60 million. Today, the federal government of Nigeria owes N90 million in terms of judgment (on Okolie’s case),” Ihensekhien Jr. said.

This judgment where they awarded N60 million to her against the federal government was delivered on June 23, 2022, by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

FIJ reported in 2021 how Okolie had left her house on June 17 of the same year and never returned. She was kept at the office of the IRT, Owerri, where she was washing clothes and cooking.

After a social media uproar, the police admitted to having her in their custody on the basis that she worked closely with “one Benjamin Uzoma Emojiri, also known as ‘Onye Army’, one of the ESN commanders earlier declared wanted by the Police for his lead role in planning, coordinating and executing the attack on the Imo State Police Command Headquarters and Imo State Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service”.

Okolie later went on to sue Usman Baba, the Inspector-General of Police, for the ordeal the NPF put her through.

She has got great lawyers!! 🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓 👏👏👏👏👏

Since the ECOWAS court is right there in Abuja, I would suggest all others who the Nigerian police have illegally detained before now proceed to the same courts to get their deserved compensation under the Nigerian Constitution as well. It is your constitutional right to claim and so there is no reason why not to. 🥺

Terrorists must pay for their crimes against humanity.

As for the bold, I pray that you will be accused, arrested, and detained for a crime you didn't commit, so that you can experience the same inhumane treatment that Gloria Okolie went through. And I pray that when you cry for help and shed crocodile tears in detention, no one will come to your aid.

She has another judgement for 60 million, making it 90 million

But it highlights how lawless Nigeria is that you can arrest a person and detain them indefinitely without charge even though the law forbids it

She should leave Nigeria then file a case in an international court to enforce the judgement. Seize any Nigeria owned asset abroad and sell it to recover the judgement debt.

This case is a true show of shame as to how rotten the Nigerian Police Force are

You arrest a young girl, claim she is an 'IPOB Spy', detain her for over three months without access to a Lawyer as her parents are running helter-skelter not knowing what happened to her. In that time, you turn the girl into a personal slave who cooking and washing

When the parents finally find their daughter after months of searching, the Police hurriedly moved the girl to Abuja and charged the girl to court for being an IPOB member. When the case got to court, all the Police could tell the court is that they think she is an IPOB member because her boyfriend is an ESN commander.

Where in the constitution does it say you can arrest a person based on what the boyfriend may be, or may not be? What is that?

This is how the Nigerian Police operates, an organisation that should uphold the law, but is full of criminals in uniform that know nothing about the law.

They always rush to the media to shout ipob without any investigations. This points to the fact that they may be protecting the perpetrators.

They don't obey their own laws, but they expect Finland to repatriate Simon Ekpa.

Simon Ekpa will simply point to this case as a reason why he should not be handed over to Nigeria.

Nigeria should compensate all those who have been detained illegally so that it human rights records can improve in the eyes of the international comity.

I'm from Orlu.
My brother has been kidnapped before and we paid heavily for his release.
My best friend was shot dead for refusing to hand over his car to unknown gunnen in Imo state few years ago.
So I don't know what else about the unknown gunmen that I need you to lecture me on.

Get this tho; Unknown gunmen killing innocent people in the east are not Biafran agitators. The Easterners know this for a long time, and that's why irrespective of the amount of killings, no Easterners are interested in ending the struggle.

The authorities and desperate politicians should call their unknown gunmen to order. Those agitating for fair treatments within the Nigerian federation or outside it, have the right to do so. If you don't believe so, that's you personal view but you have no right to pontificate on issues way above your pay grade.
