The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has challenged aspects of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) report.

On Monday, the NBS said the country’s unemployment rate decreased to 4.3 percent in the second quarter (Q2) of 2024, compared to the 5.3 percent recorded in Q1 2024.

The report also said the employment-to-population ratio, which measures the number of employed workers against the total working-age population, increased to 76.1 percent in Q2 2024.

According to Punch, Chris Onyeka, the national assistant general secretary of the NLC, criticised the report and described it as a “voodoo document” that fails to reflect the stark realities Nigerians face daily.

Onyeka said the figures are a “fabrication designed to mislead the public”, adding that the data was inconsistent with the deteriorating economic landscape.

Unemployment cannot be coming down in Nigeria when factories are closing shops,” he said.

It cannot be coming down when there is increasing inventory and reduced consumer spending. If anything, unemployment is increasing.”

He questioned the methodology behind the report, describing it as a “figment of imagination concocted by people who want to manipulate figures”.

He also challenged the NBS to substantiate its claims by identifying the sectors supposedly generating jobs.

“Once data does not reflect reality, it loses relevance. Unfortunately, the NBS has lost credibility as a result of the data they continue spewing out,” he said.

“Where are the jobs coming from? Is it from employers who are complaining of consumer resistance and slowing economic activities? It doesn’t add up.

“The truth remains: the NBS has become a failed institution, much like INEC in the eyes of the public.”

NBS got it wrong today, they've been trying especially that last release which honestly reflect on extreme hunger against the populace

But in most cases they can't give out uncensored data

Even at this time the statistics clearly shows in our body

Tinubu thinks all Nigerians are his Yoruba people who are very easy to decieve with conjectured data.

Only a fool will believe unemployment reduced when in essence many employed Nigerians are now beggars.

Even on NL, check out the increasing numbers of beggars including those who beg shamelessly.

I thought NBS was smart, but now I realize how dumb they are. How can unemployment reduce amidst all the economic turbulence we are experiencing under Tinubu?

Propaganda doesn't grow the economy

All the manipulated propaganda data from the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics will not grow the economy.

Real economic growth will be felt in the lives and living standards of Nigerians.

As long as the cost of basic food items, fuel, transportation, etc., continues to rise as it is currently, negatively impacting the lives of the average Nigerian, then Tinubu and the NBS are merely dishing out propaganda, deceiving themselves into thinking they are deceiving Nigerians.

How can Nigeria , a struggling economy with one of the worst economic indices in the world have an unemployment rate close to that of Canada. NBS is just a useless organisation, I can bet they don't even have a statistician in that organisation.

NBS during Buhari regime used to give stats that were very close to the reality of our economy in terms of inflation rate and unemployment percentage....as soon as chief propaganda machinery Tinubu aka balablu took over,he ensured agencies that are meant to give out near accuate data about the economy became biased and partisan!
That's how they claimed through finance minister edun that cash transfers were sent to millions of Nigerians with no single data to know who received or how they were able to come up with such names!
At the end,U cannot lie forever!

70 percent of Nigerians are unemployed.
I lost my certificate earned job in 2015 and after several FRSC , Immigration, Civil Defense recruitment ends in who knows one strong politician or senator, I lost d passion, keep my certificate and started hustling.

Thank God today, have achieved everything a man can boast of but I often get sad dat spending 4years in a public university and making Second class upper seems like a waste of time and resources.

I'll rather advice parents to send their kids to technical schools and that huge university fees etc, gather them together and set d child up.

I was born in a wrong country

People are survivors,as one way is closing ,another one is opening .

A master holder that japa to UK and he's working has a caregiver is employed.

A master holder that's doing Uber in Nigeria is employed.

What the NLC failed to consider is that there's a difference between unemployment and underemployment.
