1 person can be the brain behind the innovation, but it takes many skilled artisans and technicians to turn that innovation into commercial success. In otherwords, in any successful industrial setting, skilled hands (artisans, craftsmen, technocians etc) are needed more than engineers.

Been reading through this thread and it bizarre how almost everyone missed the point.
So you've looked around you didn't see bricklayer and ironbender in your environment.
Now contrast with if you've ever come across a lathe machine design specialist in Nigeria

The reason why it is as if our university graduates are not productive is because the university don't provide adequate apparatus and experimental materials. The ones that government procure are either sold out or locked up only to be brought out during accreditation. So the university graduate are now turned to philosophers and abstract thinkers no practicality in their learning.

The main problem is we Nigerians hardly want to struggle for the common good of this nation. We are mostly saboteurs. I can remember a headmaster of a technical secondary school who told his students to carry almost all the machines and hand tools that was bought for the students by the Federal government to his house. He stole almost every thing. That's how it plays out in all sectors. WE ARE OUR OWN PROBLEM.

Nigeria needs Artisans and farmers more than certificate holders but in reality certificate holders can also be artisans and farmers. Our value system dignifies white collar jobs

2. You seem not to know that blue collar jobs are the backbone of industrialisation. No matter how many tertiary degrees you have, no matter how many innovations you can come up with, you need people who can put in sweat and blood to do the 'dirty' jobs. People with technical know-how and special skill sets. Those people whom you take for granted which brings me to my third point.

3. You come across as one of those who raise thier noses against honest Labour. You see a bricklayer or mechanic and see the person as sub-human. You think they contribute nothing to the economy.

It's high time we all talk about acquiring technical skills. Each year, graduates are released into the labour market where there are no jobs.

How many people retire every year? Compare the number of retirements with the number of graduates each year, you will understand the mess we are in.
bro, artisans are suffering more than graduates in Nigeria na you nor know. How many millionaires are artisans? But I can bet with you that every millionaire in Nigeria is a graduate. When there is no progress in other sectors artisans are the ones that suffer the most. The sign of a developed country is that her citizens don't want to do odd jobs, China, Canada and other developed countries not dey do artisan works again, they import labor from developing countries to come hustle for their country ni.

If indeed what he is saying is true, how come they still pay brick layers very small in this country? If indeed Nigeria is short of these, their pay should have been high to attract people into the job.
Nigerians don't care about certs. If cert is our problem, a Bank Manager won't resign to be a cleaner in Canada! Let them pay brick layers good money and people will abandon their school for the job.

Oshiomole got this completely wrong.

I can’t count how many technical schools here in the west. I got some friends that graduated from technical schools. It’s usually pure practical in which ever program you want to study..

It's still engineers that will design and build machines for mass production
Bricklayers or iron benders don't do mass production. Your idea is like comparing a subsistence farmer with hoe and cutlass with an agric engineer who uses tractors and other machinery. Why are we unable to feed ourselves when agriculture is our largest employer of labour? The answer is that there are so many Bricklayer level farmers and so few agric technologist.
