Hello! Please I need advice. My name on my birth certificate and other documents is James Chika Johnson. James is my first name, Chika my second and Johnson my last name.

When I was registering for the JAMB UTME exams, a mistake was made in the order of my name and Chika was my first name and James my middle. I was like 16 then, and I didn't think it would matter.

Now, because JAMB would send the same name format to the schools during admission and all, I've been like that all these years.

I just received my certificate yesterday, and it bears Chika as my first name and James as my last.

My National ID card, Voters card and all other documents, including my SSCE results are James as my first and Chika as my last name.

This has never been a problem for me. In fact, during our Certificate Verification at school, the council did not bring up any issue because my name in the school was Chika James Johnson, but on my SSCE certificate was James Chika Johnson.

On the school notice board, there was a note that the Student would bear all responsibility for any error once they leave the issuing room if they don't point it out there. But this is not technically an error because I've been going through my university education with this name order. All my tests, exams, and registrations in school.

Please will this affect me later? Like during NYSC registration or something? What can I do?

Carry on with your life.... Anywhere you are to fill a form and you are given space for SURNAME always ensure you write your surname there... That's all that matters.

they don't use SSCE certificate in Nysc though, only your BSC or b.tech degree cerificate. Since Chika is now your first name and James your last name in your degree certificate, if the school can't change it. It would surely affect your Nysc discharge certificate aswell. You will have to change it to corresponds with your other documents like NIN, BVN e.t.c cos, that's where the issue is, even your banks account names. The names must corresponds. That's why you will need to do an affidavit for the corrections and take it to the bank, in respect to your BVN, NIN and others.

mine was on my admission letter they made mistake on my surname
i fixed in school...
i think what you should have done was to correct the name in the school admssion letter to correspond with your names on your document.
and you can later go to jamb to correct the name...
the name and the picture would have made it easy for you..
from what you are saying now your cert , call up letter and nysc cert would bear the names jamb gave you right?
if yes i dont know what you can do

@OP.. What you mentioned above can not affect you in any way. The only thing can affect you is wrong spelling (like writing JHIKA instead of CHIKA, etc) or using initials eg CHIKA J. Johnson and full name in other documents

My O'LEVEL Certificates (WAEC and NECO) bear a different name arrangement from my Uni certificate. ie instead of ABC it was BCA, just like you, I went to do affidavit in court (they called it name reconciliation) but I haven't used it till date. Anytime I present it, they'd say I don't need it.

So you're fine bro.

But if you're having a doubting mind, you can go do name reconciliation affidavit and present it should you need it.

@OP, dats a serious issue. U should av corrected it after ssce, cos it's really very late now. U will understand how serious it is wen u av minor bank issue, like making huge transfer. They will stress d living hell out of u, dat the name must b dsame in any identity card u used.

Mine was only d first other name dat was missing from my NIN, cos dats d identification I used, and my bank name has all 3, dey didn't acknowledge d affidavit dat states dat all 3 names are mine. They said I must change it via NIN or any identification card I want to use

U av 2 options

A) Just live with it like dat. Assume James as d Last name n Johnson as ur other name, since chika is already ur first name there. And I also hope it's same like this in ur bank details...

B) Swear an affidavit dat the 3 names are urs and dat there was a mistake, ur other name was used as last name and last name as ur other name. And also go and change ur NIN to d new format n other identification like driver's licence and voter's card. If u can't change d voter's card, apply for a new one wen it time with d exact pattern u want..
Then take d affidavit, new identification to ur bank and use it to change ur NIN and change of name in ur acct....

Option B is very stressful, cos it's illogical to comprehend d fact dat a mistake was made in ssce, jamb, degree and NIN. It will be difficult to convince someone it's a mistake. I would av been easier if u av corrected it after ssce.

In terms of job and work related stuff, it won't b stressful since u av affidavit to cover it, and all 3 names were actually in ur cert, not dat u are changing anyone.

But every logical person will wonder how u made such a mistake consistently, so it's better d affidavit should be change of surname and other name, instead of claiming or 3 names are urs... Explain to d person dat will do d affidat dis exact way u av done here as well, so he can advise u as well, and also, I beg u, go to ur bank and explain to dem and seek for solution on how dey think u can fix it too.

I hope dis will help, thanks

Except he doesn't want to travel out of the country. If he has it in his plans to, then he should start shedding tears from now on or see if he can rectify the issue as that is "maximum tears loading".

Forget, I'm in the UK. Studying and working with the NHS. Offered admission into 2 different schools and I picked the best one for me.

Name arrangement is not a problem. Spelling errors, using initials are.

They'll even rearrange your name for you at work.

You both have different issues. Yours is missing name, his issue is name arrangement. No one will query you for name arrangements.

So he won't have any complication with his bank? But I will still advise he visits his bank, cos they headache the most. Just imagine the current of that lady whose brother told about money in his acct and access are denying dat there is no money. These people can use little things to defraud or stress you.

That's why I said he should do name reconciliation affidavit. So he can present it should he have a reason to

Your issue is name rearrangement.

It's barely an issue. Your affidavit should sort things out.

A name reconciliation affidavit will fix the issue. Maintain your real surname as the surname. One of my certificates has my name wrongly arranged as I speak and without an affidavit, I have never had any issue with it.

However, if you go into politics in the future, your opponents may use that to score a cheap political point.

Thank you. I plan to do my international passport next year, so I could just use the name arrangement on my university certificate from now on.

The solution to your problem is to go to court and swear affidavit, or go to jamb and do change of name.

He can't possibly be telling the truth. Even Nigerian immigration will bounce you. Having two different surnames in different documents is a security issue.
He is better off swearing an affidavit of a kind...and harmonizing things and sticking to one name format going forward.
