Should I Leave For Canada by dipset01: 4:17pm On Nov 30 |
Just at a crossroad, I currently work for an FCMG in Nigeria currently go home with about 1.7m monthly as income after tax, also have some other benefits, I got my PR since 2022 and did my soft landing with my family and came back to Naija 2023. Since then I have been job hunting in Canada, lately and got a contract job with an IT firm, the pay not so fantastic but it is more than enough to me the needs of myself and my family. The contract is for 7months as I am reliefing someone who is on a long leave. Wondering if I should just resign in my current job and move with my family to canada. The contract job I got is exactly what I do today in my naija job with the same grade, just contract. What do you guys think, just so you know i current support the house 100%, I spend like 800k to run the house in this Tpain economy and usually endup saving 900k monthly. I have also been hearing alot of stories on the challenges in Canada and how canada is beginning to change its immigration policy, I dont want to loose my PR. |

If u Japa...u go feel small regret but u go eventually dey alright... If u dey naija...1.7M per month is not bad salary man...so u go also dey alright .Unless the clueless president and his CBN gov finds a way to destroy the exchange rate more to 8000 naira per dollar..... 2 Likes |

What happens after the contract ends? You definitely will lose your sponsorship visa and become illegal? Also, have you met with people to tell you the cost of living in that job location so you know if it can give you a better life than what you currently have in Nigeria? 1.7 monthly with job security is not something you dump for a 7 month contract. If you get an extension, that will be good, but if the contract ends, it will be disastrous. The Canadian job market is not smiling. Make sure you weigh your risk very well before you reach a conclusion. |

Omo 1million naira savings per month and you wan go Canada, don't be unfortunate, If you trust your wife, send her go there or your younger brother, to test the waters, My friend wey de Canada now sold his 2 cars and 2 lands, is not happy presently don't know if Canada is difficult for him or too cold, but the way he spends on family and friends is not same since his Canada trip 3 Likes |

Run to Canada withour DELAY! Don't even think twice. You can leverage the contract job as local experience to get other Canadian jobs. The KEY reason to leave Nigeria is your child(ren). Nothing else. There is POISON in Nigeria. It stifles growth and fertilizes WICKEDNESS. And it's only going to get WORSE! Plus if you don't do it NOW, you may live to REGRET it. Canada is about to get a Conservative, anti-immigrant government that would make it difficult to relocate. Leave NOW! 2 Likes |

It is permanent residency (PR) that he got and not sponsorship visa. AllenSpencer: 1 Like |

dipset01: What was your motivation for applying for the PR? I guess you're aware you must meet certain obligations to maintain status. |
Re: Should I Leave For Canada by Deeegbee: 9:33pm On Dec 01 |
You should know what you want? What are your long term goals. Also, ask yourself why did I apply for the PR in 2022? You are in the best position to make that decision!! I also work in a top tier FMCG with global HQ in the Netherlands before I left Nigeria. I was sick & tired of office politics and everyday fear of losing the job coupled with the fact Nigeria lacked so many social amenities. For me, when I applied for in 2021 and relocated thereafter, since then I have no regret whatsoever. You already answered your question in your last paragraph that you don’t want to lose your PR. You still have 3 years left to make that bold step. |

*knock on wood* I don't think Canada will snatch your PR. I hope not. I think their biggest concern is the Indians flooding the country. Have you considered some other possibilities? 1.) How uncomfortable are you willing to be? Have you explored IT jobs working on US military bases outside the US? 2.) Do you have enough to invest in real estate in Canada? 3.) What does your wife do for a living? Is she training in something high-paying? |
Re: Should I Leave For Canada by Deeegbee: 10:05pm On Dec 01 |
Maria96: Exactly he is not serious lol. He did WES and wrote the English exam, got ITA and paid for the PR application fees and yet he can’t make up his mind. |

You would have at least read a part of his post before commenting trash. Reading culture is far from us in this part of the world. AllenSpencer: |

dipset01:You might get more responses if you post in the Living in Canada thread Your concerns are valid...certainty to uncertainty The only thing I would add is that you would need two incomes in Canada so your wife would have to prepare to work. Does you FCMG have policy for taking study leave? You can also consider going first and prepping for your family ahead. 1 Like |

79733139:What's sponsorship visa? |
Re: Should I Leave For Canada by aestake: 6:12pm On Dec 03 |
Taal17:He said they have done soft landing and went back to Nigeria. I guess at this point everyone has their PR card and can move anytime within the residency rules. |
Re: Should I Leave For Canada by 10thTenthMan: 6:48pm On Dec 03 |
aestake: I am guessing a Canadian Work Permit Visa. Sponsorship is the term commonly used for UK Immigration. It exists as well in the Canadian Immigration System, however, It is just commonly known as Work Permit. OP however is a Permanent Resident (PR). |
Re: Should I Leave For Canada by 10thTenthMan: 7:00pm On Dec 03 |
dipset01: I know people who currently run the same model. Many oil company guys do. Wife and kids are in Canada. Husband is in Nigeria hustling and visits periodically. e.g. Once every 2 months. The question is a matter of economics. 1. What will be your total income, expenditure and savings if you maintain your current model VS if you move fully to Canada? Calculate these without deceiving yourself. You know your: INCOME (Canada Vs Nigeria) MONTHLY EXPENSES (Canada Vs Nigeria-current/status quo) POSSIBLE SAVINGS (Canada Vs Nigeria - Current/status quo) Do the math and let the numbers guide you as the first thing to consider. 2. Job Security. What will be your plan B is the person you are relieving returns to work, and you are let go? I know Canada. I am also a PR. I also shuttle Nigeria back and forth. Likewise, I know you will be able to get another job in Canada. But what if the pay is not as good as Nigeria? Consider the risks and keep plans against these. 3. An additional benefit is, you get to stay with your family and spend time with them. Nurture and raise the kids with proper values, etc. You also get to enjoy the serene environment. 4. Unless of course '' You dey flex for naija, chop, enjoy, bases, booze and rock life'' which is not readily available in Canada. Canada might bore you. I am a realist. And I have presented the realistic things that should influence your decision. No BS or sugarcoating. Choose wisely. It is your future we are talking about here. 3 Likes |

10thTenthMan:Work permit is temporary work visa here. Sponsoring family members is permanent resident visa. |

Re: Should I Leave For Canada by 79733139(m): 10:08pm On Dec 03 |
I was quoting the guy who misread what the OP wrote and said that. His Canadian PR isn't tied to any job or work contract is what I was pointing out. It is for 5 years, then he either renews or apply for citizenship. aestake: |
