The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has clarified his position on the controversial tax reform bills, saying he was not an enemy of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Zulum, however, insisted that if the four tax bills currently undergoing review before the Green Chamber are passed into law, only one of the 36 states – Lagos – will be the major beneficiary. The governor made the clarification when he was featured as a guest on Sunday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today. He said, “I am a strong member of the APC. If you are to count two governors who have been in support of Tinubu from 2019 to 2023, you can mention Prof Zulum. I was the first governor to come out publicly to say that power must go to the South. “Unfortunately, the President was told by many that the North is against him. About 60.2 per cent of his votes came from the North. There are a lot of misconceptions about this tax issue. During the NEC, we advised the Federal Government to pause for a moment to have a deeper consultation with stakeholders. That was our own statement. “But later on, people have turned it upside down. I want you to believe that our consultation is central to democracy, and in a democratic setting, we are begging for the right to be consulted. This is only what has happened.” In the past few weeks, the controversial bills have pitched the 36 state governors against the Federal Government, with the former calling for the withdrawal of the bills to create room for more consultation. But Zulum had called on his colleagues and Northern stakeholders to reject the bills, insisting that the bills would damage the region’s economy if implemented. Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for transparency and fairness in the ongoing review of 86 Likes |

trutharena:He is not making any sense. If he complains of VAT sharing model, what about review of Personal tax template,is that also in favour of Lagos State alone?I am a tax man and I understand the content of the bill. There are 2 things I am not comfortable with: - The incremental review of VAT rate up to 15% in 2030 - Streamlining revenue collection and having FIRS changed to NRS. There is an aspect of the bill that does not favour Governors and that's why majority of them are kicking about it. The revenue accruable to states would be less ,if well implemented. Whether PAYE or direct assessment, workers that do not earn more than 840k in a year would be totally exempted from tax, this is where most Governors would lose revenue, they know this, they are just hiding behind VAT sharing model to make ' noise'. There would be public hearing, let them point out the part they are not comfortable with,is it the whole bill that is beneficial to Lagos alone? How can he call on president to withdraw a bill that seeks to exempt businesses with turnover of less N50million per annum from paying corporate tax? 58 Likes 6 Shares |

Finally, Tinubu and his overzealous tribal henchmen have managed to bring the much needed attention of the whole country to Lagos state. For a very long time, lagos has been cornering everything that should go to the rest of the country. They have hyjacked most federal properties in Lagos, including the former state House marina. Nigeria can not grow without solving the Lagos problem once and for all. Maybe this tax bill is a blessing in disguise for the country 5 Likes 1 Share |

Lagocracy. My only prayer is that the former East should not be on the menu this time around . If you know, you know . This fight will only get deeper and deeper. This is only the beginning. The 2027 election will hold next year in 2025 and the winner will be declared after the census results 4 Likes |

Prof Zulum is a true patriot. He has demonstrated that being a member of the ruling party is not a ticket to blind loyalty but to loyalty based on sound reasoning and patriotism. May God bless Nigeria for ever! 80 Likes |

Tax reform bill should look at the injustice in the NIger Delta. A situation where oil is produced in a state which suffers all environmental degradation, and taxes are paid to Lagos to enjoy simply because IOC have their office there is grossly an act of injustice. You cannot build justice on injustice. 5 Likes |

Why the rush to pass a bill that will have a far-reaching effect on the citizens? Those opposing this bill are justified because Tinubu has shown time and time again that he is incompetent, and every policy implemented by his government since coming into office has been catastrophic, inflicting severe hunger and starvation on the citizens. 3 Likes |

He said, “I am not an economist. But based on the calculations we did, only Lagos will benefit from this scheme. However, we have had a series of consultations with the FIRS team and had a meeting with the tax team of Lagos State. Lagos told me that they would lose a lot if this were implemented. They said, ‘We did our research and concluded we will lose.’ Lagos would lose for real.. 1 Like |

Before Tinubu reforms tax, he should reform public sector corruption. Pass a law of death sentence on anyone who steals public funds instead of passing a law to raise VAT by 100% that will be paid to mostly Lagos state while taxing the rest of Nigerians to death. Tinubu doesn't mean well for Nigerians at all. Tinubu doesn't pay any subsidy on fuel, electricity, education, health and agriculture, yet he's borrowing left and right and planning to raise taxes and VAT for Nigerians. Who does such except a wicked and corrupt president? 6 Likes |

Most Northern governors are opposed to this new tax regime because it means in essence that they would have to impose taxes on their population that does not pay much in tax....which means they lose power. It's that simple. 9 Likes |
