Under the PDP there was freedom of information & speech. If it wasn’t so the APC would not smell where they are today. Having the police arrest someone for defamation on an individual’s behalf is not far from abuse of privilege & authority. Defamation cases are settled in court and not at the police station. It is most appalling that Dele Farotimi can be treated like a common criminal just because a rich man didn’t like what he wrote. The obscene adulation of money, with or without enterprise, is why we’re where we are today as a society. It is also the reason why the future seems so bleak!

I don't think it's the police job to arrest anyone for libel or defamation I think it's the courts duty to decide a hearing for a libel or defamation case.

This is unlawful

Stop enabling illiterates into power because it suits your political, religious or social whelms!

A civil matter should be treated as a civil matter.... arresting Dele is part of broader reason why some of you will die of hungry soon! If you enable these illiterates, they will devour you at the time you leaset expect because there wuill be no Institute independent enough to challenge them when they abuse powers through their connections to govt in power!

If Dele is ready, he should also go after Elumelu and his assets abroad.... at least he will be given opportunity to prove how he abuses the priviledeges conferred on hiim by wealth, power and closeness to the present Executive govt! He might be lucky and a judge will see reason to compensate him wirth part of his assets abroad!
I dont think ut is a smart move on the part of Elumelu to get involved in this kind of negative press with Dele Farotimi...

Dude is not someone you intimidate anyhow...There is a reason most politicians avoid direct confrontation with him even when he castigates and calls them out often...

Stop yapping rubbish.
Dele has the right to speak up against evil. He has not said as much as your emergency mentor Bola Tinubu. That one said worse things about Abacha. Framing a genuine human rights activists as a trouble maker talking rubbish, all in the defense of the worst president in Nigerias history, is simply mind boggling.
You agbadorians too overdo

He has no right to defame people, he is always talking like an educated area boy on TV.

Abeg they should lock him away for a few months let him calm down,

This is not London, don’t read Oyinbo books to the extent you forget where you are, or that you will open your mouth and be making all sorts of allegations like a rabid dog.

I hope they get him a barber while he is cooling off. He looks like a man mad from the streets the gave a bath and put in some clothes.

Stop sounding like a stark illiterate...

Defamation and libel are purely civil matters so why involve the police while he could have filed a suit against perceived injury?

does the law on defamation permit the police to lock a person up "for a few months" on the basis of a petition?

I support Tony Elumelu for the petition and commend the police for taking swift action to arrest him. We must learn to stop defaming people.......

That's how one lil brat girl allegedly defamed me of which I took swift action by involving the police via petition, it was at the point of arrest, detention and charge to court that she confessed to have wrongly defamed me all because I didn't key into her demands, just imagine!

according to Nigerian Law, you can only sue for defamation and not arrest, this is an abuse of power. Let him goto court

Arrest then sue to serve as deterrent for other's whom wants to follow suit..... besides why do you feel it's everyone who arrest actually wants a case? If i really Wana deal with you, there's no point involving the police, I'll head straight to the court and teach you a great lesson but using police to put one in order... nothing more!

How is he abusing power??

This a man that has alot to lose if some rubbish is written about him if not true.

No top business man will smile at someone defaming his/her character.

He did the right by reporting to the authorities.....let dele prove what he wrote is true that all.
Dele has said he is ready for arrest and has even report to the police. Why going through the back door, trying to lure him to certain locations to abduct him, probably to 'teach him a lesson'. You know all those Machiavellian measures these elites deploy to get back at those who try to expose their misdemeanors.
If you claim defamation, file a suit, let the accused be duly served/ charged

Same rubbish the guy has been written that got him into trouble might also lead you into canal if you don't retract your steps

So what rubbish has he been written ?

Can you please mention just one out of the many rubbish he has been written?
Re: Police Arrest Dele Farotimi by casualobserver: 5:19pm On Dec 03
For all those who say why is the police involved. This is why:

Nigerians are a difficult people to govern. I wrote a post as to why I support the Uk’s clampdown on immigrants from certain nations who have a different way of life to that of the British including Nigerians. My main thrust is that they abuse the system. When you allow Nigerians unfettered freedom of speech, they abuse it such that over time it has been shown the language Nigerians understand is what we are witnessing…..jungle justice!

Be an activist by all means, oppose the govt by all means but when you defame people and make it a habit of running your mouth and crossing the line because you know you can gets way with it in Nigeria. One day you will encroach on the wrong person and you will know you have no monopoly on madness!

The reason you can defame people in Nigeria and get away with it is because you know the victim will probably not take you to court because the process is tiresome and even if they get a civil judgement against you it is difficult to enforce. You defame people because you know our institutions are weak. So when people are aggrieved and want to take action, they use the same weak system you abused to defame them to get their pound of flesh. So when you defame me and damage my reputation, I make sure you remember for the rest of your days the day you defamed me. Forget Oyinbo laws, that is justice served!

You defame me because you know nothing will happen, I arrest you because I know nothing will happen and that’s the only language the Nigerian understands! Forget all these imported Oyinbo man’s laws, rights etc, this is how we dealt with ourselves before they came and this is how we will always deal with ourselves. The difference between us and the Arabs is the Arabs never pretended to be white men like we do, or tried to adopt their laws. They whip you in public you or lock you up and their society functions.
