So Afe Babalola now the govt? Afe Babalola and Farotimi are obidient member attacking and arresting each other and not the govt so it is family matter, Ok.

Pls stop involving the govt in obidient shit...

Realdeals:
In the note shared by Farotimi himself, he was summon by the Police in Lagos based on petition by Tony Elumelu, by was granted bail on self recognition. Afe Babalola's case is another petition

DEFAMATION, as claimed by Afe Babalola, is a CIVIL MATTER.
All he need to do, is to approach the Court and seek COMPENSATION.

What has POLICE got to do with Defamation matter, when it is not CRIMINAL MATTER?
Moreover, why take him all the way to Ekiti State or is the Nigeria Police, no longer a Federal Police again?

The alleged Defamation will be about something "He Said or Wrote" but he lives in Lagos, why kidnap him all the way to Ekiti, after he has responded to Two Invitations by "Zone 2", as he said?
It is an Offense against One's Character.

People need to stop using the Police to do their dirty work of "Harassments and Intimidation", we cannot build a better Nigeria like that.
Police has Seasoned Lawyers among them (like that One that said that the Underage Children arrested and presented in Court after Three Months, for "Protesting Hunger", are University Graduates and are Married! grin grin ), they know that Defamation is a Civil Matter and they should have advised Afee Babalola (or Elumelu!) to GO TO COURT.

Pointing Gun and threatening to Shoot Staff in his former Office, seizing their Phones under threat of Gunshot (we dont want you to record our malfeasance!) kidnapping an Accused Person at Gun Point and brutalizing Staff, is not part of Democracy!

That Man, even at his age, has never been known for anything good.

I will never understand or grasp the concept or practice of police arresting and locking people up on account of petitions...!

How do we even normalise such an abnormal trampling of the fundamental rights of citizens?!!

The person is not a criminal, is not a flight risk, has no issues with the law... Why the use of oppressive tactics and force?!!

They even manhandle and dehumanise the individual.

Why can't a competent court or judge issue a summon to the individual petitioned and invited to appear in court?!!

Why the use of police force in a civil case?!!

Yet... When Kanu called this nation a zoo, you all reacted in misplaced righteous anger.
Then you are not conversant with the extant laws. The Cyber crime laws permit such and stipulated the punishment. It's a very serious issue.
The point here is that bloggers should stop defaming people. Once your online posting is false, then you have committed an offense.
By the way why do you think telling lies against someone else is fair?

and so? so the police should be allowed to operate in gestapo manner? was he ever declared wanted? was he invited for questioning and he refused to appear? was it a murder or armed robbery case. it simply a case of defamation which in sane society the police should have no business with aggrieved person should simply go to court. impunity and lawlessness everywhere
Once that defamation is posted online, it has become a cyber crime and police can be invited. That's our law in Nigeria, be educated. It's not lawlessness.

if it is posted in a newspaper article it becomes what? is defamation now equivalent to extortion or wire fraud? what kind of a society criminalizes free speech? this is so disheartening. right thinking member of society should speak out against this form of tyranny and oppression

The laws state that the police should arrest, forcefully imprison and dehumanise individuals because of allegations or petitions leveled against them?!!

What exactly are you trying to justify here, please? Or you didn't quite grasp my post?!!

Abi you wish to pretend you don't know what these law enforcements do in the name of 'arrests' ?

Who gives the police the jurisdiction to punish? Or you don't know the meaning and implication of what you said in your first paragraph?!!

Punishment comes from the judgement of a competent court of justice, after the petitioned or accused is found guilty.

It's not the duty of Policemen to punish offenses. Their Job is law enforcement.

I'm in no way justifying how our law enforcement is done, we should do better. I'm only highlighting the responsibility of citizens to know and understand the law of their country and stay out of harms way. If you comprehend that an act is criminal, you should become much careful how you conduct yourself.
But we must also recognize the impacts of falsehoods on the security of the victims. The victims are citizens that deserve the right to be protected

Yes, you are right about such offenses being wrong and criminal... But, they are a civil matter.

They are not in the league of crimes like armed robbery, battery, or homicide.

Civil offenses are handled by courts... This means the petition should be filed with the court, a judge should SUMMON the offender (note the keyword), and he should be made to explain himself.

The judge can thereafter award fines against the offender.

Remember the case between the Falanas and VDM?!!

Why didn't they have him arrested, imprisoned and his fundamental rights trampled upon?!!

You only arrest the offender if he refuses to show up in court or obey a judge's summon.

You didn't sue someone for alleged defamation, but quickly got the police to arrest and dehumanise him... That doesn't make sense.

Unfortunately most of the arrest were not based on the civil cases of libel, but on the cyber crime Act as Amendments in 2024.
Once the allege defamation is posted online it becomes a cyber crime.
If our judiciary system is fixed and cases are decided promptly, victims can get justice. But where civil cases runs for 15years, victims are forced to seek justice somewhere else.
But more importantly is that bloggers should stop destroying others people. The victims deserve justice

1. It literally did just that! πŸ€”

2. Falana is not in the Supreme Court and he did not rightly institute a kidnap of VDM either given he understood quite well that defamation cases are civil cases under Nigerian law. undecided

3. Burna Boy's instituting of the kidnap of Darlington is no different from this here case highlighted in the OP where individuals with power abuse it for selfish reasons. undecided
