Senate Sets Up Committee To Review Tax Reform Bills by Bobloco: 2:58am On Dec 05, 2024
The Senate has constituted a committee headed by the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) to address the grey areas in the tax reform bills and report back to the committee of the whole before public hearing on the bills.

The Deputy Senate President Barau I Jibrin (APC, Kano North) announced this during plenary on Wednesday.

Barau who presided over the session said there were controversies over the bills, adding that the committee was saddled with the responsibility of consulting with the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), the executive arm and other critical stakeholders.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had on October 3, 2024, transmitted to the National Assembly, four tax reform bills, in a letter, read by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Tajuddeen Abbas, during separate plenaries of the two chambers.

Tinubu said the bills would bolster Nigeria’s fiscal institutions, adding that they were in line with his government’s broader development objectives for the country.

But Nigerians including governors, traditional rulers, civil society organisations, some federal lawmakers and others have kicked against the bills.

Barau also named Senators Titus Zam (APC, Benue North West), Orjir Uzor Kalu (Abia North), Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), Abdullahi Yahaha (Kebbi North) among others as members of the committee.

Very important

All I know is the north can't continue to hold Nigeria down with their unreadiness to exploit human and capital resources for economic growth, cause they only use it for political gains.

This bill will destroy their high heavens this is why they are all fighting it.

The senate must overwhelmingly support this bill as all sane Nigerians want it passed, meanwhile not that

it is only a Nigerian girl you will see preparing for marriage and she only has #5k or less in her account

With a mind blowing milage

I don't have a problem with amending VAT revenue share, but if you're not also amending oil revenue share to match, you're not being fair to oil producing states. In case you think oil producing states are getting enough from 13% derivation, I made a post to show how oil revenue share compares with the newly proposed VAT revenue share.

Basically, if Rivers generates N100 billion for Nigeria, they get only about N19 billion after revenue is shared. But with this proposed new VAT bill, if Lagos generates N100 billion, they could get up to N36 billion naira. Is that fair?

In all, this reform must work o. It will take away burden from low income earners, if you park five cars in your garage, be ready to pay more taxes which is what is applicable in western countries.
We cannot continue to operate like this and expect a change.
Whoever is not happy with the bill is the real enemy of Nigeria.

You are correct but those countries started doing the right things several years back not today. Nigeria is just starting to abolish the tax laws of 1930 and the tax will be utilised well now unlike the much corrupt systems we are used to for years.

The narrative will change now. Reason they didn't want the bill to pass is because they want to continue the old system of symphony the economy.

The majority of the Opposition politicians in the NASS are for the bill more than the ruling party.

It's not by the power of any individual. This bill would've failed woefully if it is not in the interest of the collective South which seeks implementation of fiscal federalism and can see this bill as the first step towards the right direction.

U see the north abi northerners...they will continue to veto, preside, legislate and always have their ways in every sectors in this country bcus of their uncommon unity of foolishness among themselves even if they don't understand the context.....but u see other regions like the south east and south south. Useless tribalistic regions ..........
Until politicians stop trying to buy the north during elections bcus of their unproductive population the north will continue to have that hegemony over all asundries..............

Once they percieve something not in Thier favour they go on rampage useless unproductive clog in the wheel of progress.....

No one doesn't want to pay tax but everyone want to see what they are using their money for.
You cannot be squeezing people to pay tax but you the collector is living larger than life. Preaching one thing and doing another thing. It makes no sense and that is why people are sceptical of paying tax because they are not seeing the benefits. When they are seeing the benefits, citizens will joyfully embrace paying of tax without compulsion, as done in advanced societies.

U pple should think small before opening ur mouth ...everyone pay taxes in this Nigeria directly or indirectly

..millions of pple employed by a company pays PAYE tax, companies pay income tax on revenue, additionals by-force education tax is charged on all big business and those using generator to run big business pay emission tax,, they even pay business premises tax...

you will surely be paying VAT if u are buying any goods in this country....

There is withholding tax if u are collecting interest on ur saving from bank and collecting contracts from any company..

Nobody is escaping stamp duty...even local government tax is charged on small market women and small shops owners...

There is , land use tax for home owners for jutt owning a building weda residential or business that makes money or not...

So what on earth do u mean by someone doesn't want to pay tax...

The question has always been what exactly are our taxes used for..?? for the 3 arms of government to live luxury life style??

Tax payers money is use for free education in Europe, even for international student for free to any level of education in countries like Germany
It is used for free education, free health care, and agricultural subsidy in the UK....

If everyone sees what their money is used for..everyone will be happy to pay even 50% of their income...whats the essence of contributing to purse that is embezzled

All these pple in government studied for free in this country, ......e reach their turn they are strangling masses, and embezzling money

Pple that are actually paying taxes worried where their money is going to ...but pple like you are on zómbie autopilot making pple that want accountability look like they are wrong

Are they paying you pple for this behavior or you are just choose to support poor governance and stvpid leaders...
