Colonialism officially ended decades ago, but its effects are still felt in some African countries in form of colonial tax — a system where former French colonies pay money to France.

These payments, created during colonial times, continue through agreements made at independence. This system allows France to take about 85% of the annual income from its former colonies. As a result, these African countries struggle financially and have to borrow their own money back from France’s central bank as loans. They can only request up to 20% of the money they sent, and if they ask for more, it can be rejected. France says this system is to cover the cost of infrastructure and buildings it built over 100 years ago.

When an African leader refuses to pay the colonial tax, it often leads to a coup. Below are 10 countries still affected by this system.

Benin
Benin, formerly Dahomey, gained independence in 1960 but still pays money to France. The tax is meant to cover the cost of colonial-era infrastructure and services. Critics argue that this prevents Benin from using its funds for its own development, like building schools and hospitals.

Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso, once called Upper Volta, also became independent in 1960. However, it remains part of the CFA franc system, a currency controlled by France. This forces Burkina Faso to send a large portion of its reserves to the French central bank.

Côte d’Ivoire
Côte d’Ivoire, one of Africa’s strongest economies, plays a major role in the CFA franc system. It also makes colonial tax payments to France, which critics say keeps the country financially tied to its former coloniser.

Guinea
Guinea broke away from France’s financial agreements in 1958, demanding full independence. In response, France removed its resources and destroyed infrastructure in the country. Although Guinea stood firm, it has struggled to fully escape the colonial system’s influence.

Mali
Mali is landlocked and one of the poorest nations in West Africa. It is part of the CFA franc system and continues to pay money to France. These payments take away funds that could help Mali improve its economy and provide for its people.

Niger
Niger has vast uranium deposits that power France’s nuclear energy plants. Despite this wealth, Niger remains poor and part of the CFA franc system.

Senegal
Senegal, known for its political stability, still pays a colonial tax and uses the CFA franc. Many believe this reliance on France holds Senegal back from achieving full financial independence.

Togo
Togo, a small but resource-rich nation, also participates in the CFA franc system.

Cameroon
Cameroon has a dual colonial history under both French and British rule. The country continues to pay a colonial tax to France and is part of the CFA franc system. These financial obligations deepen Cameroon’s dependence on France, leaving fewer resources for local development.

Chad
Chad is rich in oil and other resources, yet it is one of the poorest countries in the world. Much of its wealth flows to France through colonial tax payments and the CFA franc system.

Biblical Slavery - Twale for your master!

Ephesians 6:5.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

Colossians 3:22
Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything, not only to please them while they are watching, but with sincerity of heart and fear of the Lord.

1 Peter 2:18
Servants, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, not only to those who are good and gentle, but even to those who are unreasonable.

Titus 2:9
Slaves are to submit to their own masters in everything, to be well-pleasing, not argumentative,

1 Timothy 6:1-2
All who are under the yoke of slavery should regard their masters as fully worthy of honor, so that God’s name and our teaching will not be discredited. / Those who have believing masters should not show disrespect because they are brothers, but should serve them all the more, since those receiving their good service are beloved believers. Teach and encourage these principles.

France imposed conditions on its colonies before granting them independence, particularly in Africa. These agreements, often referred to as the “Colonial Pact,” established France’s control over various aspects of the newly independent nations. While the specifics varied by country, the general conditions included:

1. Monetary Control: Colonies had to adopt the CFA franc, with reserves controlled by the French Treasury.
2. Military Presence: France maintained military bases and could intervene militarily.
3. Economic Dependency: Colonies were required to prioritize trade with France, restricting access to other markets.
4. Natural Resource Exploitation: France retained control over key resources like oil, gas, and minerals.
5. Education System: The French education system and language were maintained to influence culture and governance.
6. Exclusive Trade Agreements: Former colonies could only import and export goods through France.
7. Tax Obligations: A portion of national revenue was remitted to France.
8. Defense Agreements: France controlled defense policies and decision-making in case of threats.
9. French Contractors: Public contracts were awarded primarily to French companies.
10. French Control over Currency Printing: The CFA franc could only be printed in France.
11. Customs and Tariff Policies: France dictated import/export tariffs.
12. Intellectual Property Control: Patents and knowledge rights were often retained by France.
13. Political Alliance: Colonies aligned with France in international politics.
14. Permanent French Advisors: Key ministries, such as defense, finance, and education, had French advisors embedded.

These conditions ensured France’s continued economic and political dominance over its former colonies, creating a system often criticized as “neocolonialism.”

The six former French colonies in Africa that do not use the CFA Franc have adopted their own currencies or other monetary systems:

1. Mauritania - Ouguiya (MRU)
2. Morocco - Moroccan Dirham (MAD)
3. Algeria - Algerian Dinar (DZD)
4. Tunisia - Tunisian Dinar (TND)
5. Djibouti - Djiboutian Franc (DJF)
6. Madagascar - Malagasy Ariary (MGA)

These countries either established their currencies upon gaining independence or transitioned away from the CFA Franc over time.

Four African countries—Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and most recently Chad—have terminated various military and political agreements with France to join Algeria and Tunisia in the league This shift is largely driven by concerns over sovereignty and dissatisfaction with French influence, particularly in the Sahel region. These nations have expelled French troops, withdrawn from French-aligned organizations, and sought alternative alliances with countries like Russia and Turkey.

These still leave 14 docile African countries out of the 20 that still maintain complete or partial colonial pact (Slavery) with leeching France. cool

But I was told that Abiola once said in his campaign that he would stop the colonial tax. I don't know but somebody told me. So I am now asking if Nigeria is not also paying colonial tax. If he truly said it, it means Nigeria is/was paying it because he cannot be a Nigerian president and interfere with what is happening in the francophone countries.
