Sowore To Lead Protest Against Judiciary Over Dele Farotimi's Detention by emkz: 8:07am On Dec 06
Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, has asked Nigerians to join a “nationwide/global protest” against the judiciary over the prosecution of Dele Farotimi, a human rights activist.

In a post on X on Thursday, Sowore said the protest will kick off on December 10 from the Afe Babalola Chambers in Lagos, Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, Police Headquarters in Ekiti, and Kings’ College Campus in London.

"Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," the post reads.

It is time we all begin to condemn the weaponization of protests by Omoyele Sowore.

We must not sit idly and be selective when it comes to issues bordering on national security.

Mr Dele Farotimi not only made some damning allegations against Afe Babalola SAN in a book, he also made same in a press conference.

According to Afe Babalola's petition against Dele Farotimi, he petitioned that Dele Farotimi alleged as follows:

"That Aare Afe Babalola corrupted the Supreme Court to procure a fraudulent judgement in the service of his client" See page IX.

"That Aare Afe Babalola, Olu Daramola, Olu Faro and the law offices of Afe Babalola & Co, (Emmanuel Chambers) compromised the Supreme Court and the remaining semblance of integrity it might have had when they went back to the Supreme Court and got the Court to swim in the sewer of corruption and shameful self-Abnegation". See page X

"That Afe Babalola libeled me and the fact of the libel became known to me in a suit against Lawal Pedro SAN". See page X.

What has been established?

1. Dele Farotimi himself admitted there was a bench warrant issued against him to appear in Ekiti State to answer to the summons. wWhy didn't he honour the invitations? He claimed he committed the crime in Lagos and saw no reason to be called to Ekiti. Which law school did he even attend?

2. Instead of attending to the warrants, Dele Farotimi rushed to do a press conference to make claims that Afe Babalola was using the judiciary to bully him. No one questioned his accusations; they just believed him, because in their eyes, he could do no wrong.

3. If there is a bench warrant, how is it illegal? Can it be vacated? How? If yes, why didn't he seek a superior court order to vacate it?

4. Sahara Reporters and People's Gazette are being used to villify Afe Babalola to the effect that they even lied that King's College was considering their relationship with Afe Babalola. I think they should be added to the law suit.

5. Some people do not understand that human rights activism is not a license to bully those they don't like. Many of the latter-day human rights so-called activists are using their voice to terrorize and destroy others. There must be accountability for things said.

6. Atiku Abubakar desperately tried, but failed to effectively condemn President Bola Tinubu for the arrest of Farotimi. His vituperations failed when it was established that both Farotimi and Babalola supported the same candidate, and Babalola is not particularly fond of Tinubu. The candidate both legal pugilists supported took sides with one of them quickly because the mob supporting him took that side.

What we see is that there is unjustified anger by a certain mob against Afe Babalola, which we consider unfair. Dele Farotimi made some allegations against Afe Babalola and the Supreme Court as well as Justices of the Supreme Court, including Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour. It is incumbent upon Dele Farotimi to prove those allegations so that if anyone is corrupting our Supreme Court, the person is identified and EFCC steps in, and all judges involved are punished. Otherwise, let the law be applied on such if a case of defamation is established. It is also a matter that borders on national security if our Supreme Court is said to be corruptible and corrupted. If justices were compromised, the sensible thing to do would be to submit a petition to the NJC. If that was not done, then it amounts to malice to rush to write a book without substantiating such accusations. I urge the DSS to invite Dele Farotimi to come and give explanations on what he knows about corruption in the judiciary.

As for Afe Bababola, do not bow to the pressure of the mob. The name you have built for yourself and your children is being rubbished. Deploy every legal arsenal you have to ensure that Dele Farotimi proves everything he accused you of.

I'd also call upon the young ones who join protests senselessly. Omoyele Sowore is a failed politician who uses protests to advance his failed political ambitions. He misled some of our young ones to riots last August. Remember that some of them died. Has he visited their families? Do not allow yourself to be a weapon in the hands of a failed revolution monger, please.

Let the judiciary do its job, please. This is a case between two Nigerians more so legal practitioners.
All these intimidation of the judiciary will not help Farotimi's case unless you, Sowore, wants to use the matter to trend as usual.

First time I will support a protest

Someone used pen and paper to write against you

Why don’t you use that same pen and paper to defend yourself and all the allegations

Instead, you go around criminal detaining him

How many corrupt politicians have been detained in such manner before

How is democracy going to thrive if you don’t have freedom of speech

There is no smoke without fire, it’s possible Afe Babalola was an extremely corrupt lawyer who received kickbacks and contracts illegally through govt influence

His university costs billions almost the same on par with universities built with fraudulent pastors who milk thier congregation for money such as bishop oyedepo and the rest

If he had nothing to hide he won’t be running helter scatter because of a book

But please don't just allow B*afrans to join you in the protest.

We all know anything they are involved in must lead to violence, crime, can*ibalism & anarchy

It baffles me when Sowore and co begin to tell an aggrieved person how to seek redress.
Under Nigeria law, Afe Babalola has an option to either pursue a criminal charge or file for libel, he made his choice, why should that be a problem.
I imagine that Dele as a lawyer already knows the options available to Afe Babalola, and was prepared to damn either of it. Why the fuss.
Why should Sowore take this as oppression and didn't see that Dele has severely injured Afe. Let's be fair to all.

Lets see how this will pan out.
The alleged crime was committed in Lagos i.e the book was published and unveiled in Lagos. So there is no Police to handle the case in Lagos that should have jurisdiction over the case? You guys are just being clever by half by initiating the case in Ekiti

The argument of jurisdiction will destroy the case in Ekiti because only Lagos courts can assume jurisdiction over the case.

The case cannot also be prosecuted in Lagos courts because Defamation is no longer an offence in the state.

The highest the old man can do is to use his connections to detain Dele for some time to inflict emotional pains on him to soothe his ego.

The poser: Is the crime alleged against Dele bailable? If it is, why is he in detention? Neither the judiciary nor the activists should be seen to intimidate the other. Due process should be followed. I feel that Dele Farotimi should be bailed and charged with the strictest proof of his allegations. Since these allegations are against the judiciary, it is touchy because the same judiciary will look into the complaint.
