You don’t necessarily need to spend so many years serving someone, a better arrangement is to intern with Oga for a year and pay him, learn all you need to learn.

Go online , learn how to run ads on Facebook and instagram, scale your business and become your own boss.

Win Win.

No system is perfect but it's still better than the yoruba system. Imagine after learning for 2 to 3 years before you obtain freedom you'll pay for certificate 50k bring pounded yam and egusi to the boss house first thing in the morning, one cooler of amala, a cooler jollof rice and a cooler of meat, 6 packs malt and you'll pay for tent and chair after then you'll buy gift for the establishment. After you've paid 50k aprenticeship fee and 5k for form.

I concur with you. The Yoruba apprenticeship system is totally rubbish. My junior sister served one of our village relations from Ijebu. We paid through our nose. At the end of her stay, the man did not even settle her at all nor connect her to some of his customers for her to atleast get some footing. I very much prefer the Igbo apprenticeship system over the one we practice in Yorubaland.

Some matters are very mean. I know of one who finds excuses at the end of each apprentices training and gives them nothing.
I know another who treats his boys like slaves. Usually, the boys too act stupid by stealing from him as such, he doesn't settle them at the end.
Nevertheless, I know many great ones who established their boys at the end of their training.

Yoruba obsession.

The apprenticeship system failed according to Yoruba hate mongers.

Atleast the skull mining, tout grooming and Propaganda training institute in the south West is growing astronomically.

Yoruba youths litter everywhere 'jobless and foolish' doing nothing but being pickpockets and armed robbers after shouting mandate foolishly.

Such a sad representation of a failed tribe called YORUBA in the South West Of NIGERIA.

It’s failed and flawed.

Who will waste 9 years serving one mad man that will not settle his boy afterwards.

No money to settle but Oga and family dey go vacation.

Well , only to igbo boys, you can’t try this madness to an Edo boy

The dishonest masters who unfortunately happen to be in the majority are the ones ruining the once effective apprenticeship system.

Just last month, I was listening to one who brought his case to the popular radio programme "Brekete Family", and lamented about how his master used him for 9 years (after initially agreeing on just 6 years) and left him without any form of settlement thereafter. He narrated how his boss would ask him and the other apprentice to come and wash clothes including the boss wife's panties in his residence. He bought bathroom slippers for them which he mandated them to wear always and warned them never to wear any other footwear apart from bathroom slippers which he would still seize anytime they "misbehaved", leaving them to walk bare footed as a form of punishment. It was really heart-wrenching to hear the guy's ordeal that morning.

There is also another man who lives very close to my housee and who sells water tanks in large quantities. I see how he treats his apprentice whenever they visit and it makes me wonder if these men have any conscience at all.

Every labourer deserves his/her wages. I think it is better to sign agreements with enough witnesses and notarise it properly before embarking on the journey of apprenticeship.

Igbo apprenticeship system has a much higher success rate than the Nigeria system. You support wobbling Nigeria, while denigrating a much more promising one. I dikwa okay?

The boss that got swindled lacks proper risk management. In every business you do never put all your capital in one bag. As an importer, at any point in time never use 70 to 100 percent of your capital to import goods from the the same source no matter how good the business opportunity sound.

Why the so much hate? Where you not loved and properly groomed at home?
A topic was raised, discussed and the inherent challenges looked at, but all you choose to do was to drag a tribe that the name wasn't mentioned anywhere in the write up into your pathetic write-up!

The system is a good one, it's the evil, dubious bosses that are ruining it. I've seen a number of cases where the apprentice will serve the master only to be accused of theft right as he's about to round up and sent away without settlement. There's even one that got arrested by his boss and died in detention. The cases in the op are suspicious too, why is it that it's towards the time of apprentices settlement that the boss suddenly got duped? In the line of business they've been in for years? Not adding up.

I am IGBO and I understand the 'WHY' of the topic. Can you actually go through the post history of the moniker and see why the response was activated?

Now I ask, why won't the Poster talk about the EPIDEMIC of ritual killings and Fulani domination happening in YORUBALand. To the extent that 4 OBAs were killed by Fulani Herdsmen.?

Why the obsession with IGBO activities?

Nonsense

I have apprentices working with me and I promise myself I will lift them, i.e I will make them succeed but then they need to help themselves.

I have seen one boy who has previously been settled in one place squander his business money he got from the first place, he went to another place, a long the line of his apprenticeship, he impregnated someone and pushed for abortion, this same boy gambles, womanize and do all sort of things.
I'm sure his boss has zeroed his mind where he is but just buying time so he can complete his time and leave his house with his anyhowness.

Tomorrow, someone will come and say that system is this or that.

Some of these boys get their own for body.

The Yoruba system is far better. It gives both the apprentice and the master some level of privacy and respect.

Learn mechanic, after 3 years bring your parent to come and do graduation. If your parent want to invite the whole community that is their business. After the three years, you look for a workshop and start working.

So he can decide to go back to school and as well do other things. How can one serve a master for 9-12 years and after that the master will still bring him story.
