True talk o. The way teenagers grow rapidly in this decade is alarming. You will see a 16 or 18 year old teenagers as big as someone in his 30s

I thought so, but just wajt to be certain I'm not the only one that has seen it.

I know gmo has existed for long but why has someone not been doing it for us to notice.
Only this year end I'm seeing such

There was literally a video circulating last year about how Europeans were to export not GMO fed but actual GMO chickens to Nigeria from Dec 2024.

I think you're a very smart person to be asking these questions. The fact is that food production, processing and sale are not regulated in Nigeria. So farmers, wholesalers and market women use anything in any quantity and at time - which they feed to the unsuspecting public. Ideally, someone needs to investigate this and assure the public that nothing untoward is going on. Anyway, I'll stick to my local chicken for now.

^^^
Very true.

The person you quoted is asking the right questions - and you have answered some of them.

Your second sentence says it all. We are a fifth world country going up against international agri-business empires that are on the hunt for more (and more) profits. Who is likely to prevail?

The reason is that day old chick price went up as much as 2k per bird, farmers that were suppose to stock 6 to 8 weeks before Xmas couldn't and decided to continue rearing the one they were suppose to sell themn for additional weeks up to Xmas period

Is as simple as that.
emmy512:
December of last year marked the first time I came across a chicken so big and heavy that I had to stop and wonder. It’s not something you typically see around here, and I’d imagine the same goes for other states as well.

Initially, I thought it was just a rare exception when I received two hefty chickens as gifts. They were so massive that I almost doubted they were the regular chickens we’re used to seeing. Each one cost up to ₦28,000 a price far beyond what we’d usually associate with the common poultry we know.

However, my visit to the market recently revealed something surprising. Chickens just as big as the ones I received were everywhere! Stall after stall, it was the same big, heavy birds ready for sale. It got me thinking: why the sudden shift?

Where did all these oversized chickens come from? Why weren’t they as common before the end of 2024?

It’s curious how this trend seemed to pop up almost overnight. Could it be that something new is being used to grow these chickens faster and larger? Were there advancements in poultry farming techniques that suddenly became widespread? Or is this tied to some kind of new feed or growth-enhancing practice that wasn’t used before?

More importantly, should we be concerned about potential health implications? If these chickens are being bred or enhanced in ways we don’t fully understand, could there be side effects for consumers down the line?

I can’t help but wonder if others have noticed this trend too. Does it feel suspicious to you, or do you think it’s simply a result of improved farming practices?
Share your thoughts
have you encountered these big chickens recently, have you been seeing them often before ending of last year? and do you know what might be causing this sudden boom?

Maybe it's only me that's noticed this

This chicken weighed 9kg when I went to buy it on 24th Dec. cost me 40k in Lagos. I was in awe of its size that I began to wonder what the rearers feed them. Haven’t seen such a thing before. The picture doesn’t do justice to the actual size of this chicken

We want more of this, on a larger cheaper scale.

Why are you wondering?
The Chicken have been genetically modified. My family Raised 10 chick's starting around June, 3 Broiers and 7 layers. The broilers were so big after 3 months, they had to go. The layers ate same feed, but were struggling to get to half the weight of broilers. It's not the feed, and it's not selective breeding. It's gene modification being experimental on us for longterm health effects while the Government regulates in absenteeism.

^^^
Your last sentence is what worries me. Our governments have been very poor at delivering some of the most basic services where there isn't any foreign interest at stake. This ineptitude becomes much more costly when it gets to international agribusiness worth billions - and the stakes are very high, with our food security and public health potentially at huge risk down the line. Countries whose governments (like ours) are always asleep at the wheel will pay a heavy price.

GerogeI:
Just like they are now mixing carcinogenic substances into straight run naptha to make gasoline and claiming the refineries are suddenly working. Na all of us go suffer am with time.

^^^
sad

Some of us can still remember the Koko toxic waste incident of the 1990s and what it did to the communities that were affected. If a foreign ship could come into Nigerian waters and just dump that sort of stuff so easily, then what else have they dumped that we don't know about?

These calories from GMO are transfered to children who consume these foods genre in enormous quantity, hence the extra large size of teenagers these days.

Thank God for my local fowl and village local goat. They are healthier because they eat natural grasses.

No the theory there is we have always been malnourished. Those weight and height you thought were normal are actually stunted.
Except genetics, Africans are naturally tall, heavier and bulky people na malnutrition dey stunt am.
With adequate nutrition and frequent calorie intake, it's ni surprise that our children and teenagers are getting bigger rivaling their black counterparts in abroad countries. It'll also bring out the beauty in them.
If the economy can be good, you'll be surprised on how good looking and physically upright Nigerians can be.

Genetic modification...!

One of the reasons people will eat little and still gain weight.

The feeds being fed to these birds are designed in the lab to enhance their cells and 'improve' them.

It's also happening with seeds for planting.

Nigerians won't escape this Westernised stage of human evolution or retrogression, since we have refused to be independent of the Western world.

Yeah we prefer the days of our forefathers where majority of under 5 die from malnutrition, and those who survive are mentally malnourished to drive innovative thoughts.

Lol
But native fowl don't have much meat on its body. I prefer Noiler sha. It's not as tasteless as broiler. But generally Nigerians just like big big things regardless of how it taste. T

That's how I went to sell Noiler to one man some years ago, and he said next time the one I should bring for him are those ones that are too big that they can no longer walk. Imagine. Most people don't care about taste or how healthy the chicken is, they just want it to be BIG.

You no lie. We are stomach first people.

Most of food they even considered native are engineered products of the 20th century.

Lol, stop making me laugh here. Shawarma, pizza, hamburger that many of us couldn't afford, that many of our parents couldn't afford for us to eat regularly or at all. If a kid is eating all these regularly, do they need it to be pumped with hormones or come from GMO products before you would notice their effects on the kid's growth and skin? That's massive carbs and protein intake.
Re: Have You Noticed The Sudden Trend Of Big Chickens In Nigeria? by themanderon: 9:22pm On Jan 02
I once had a glimpse into the farm queen Elizabeth owned them. I thought I would find these big chickens but alas what I found there was the local chicken we overlooked for these big chickens that were basically modified to produce more meat probably using chemicals whose long term effects on humans are unknown.
Those oversized chickens are not natural to nature hence their size. The reason we are having outbreaks and sudden increase in diseases is because we modern humans are eating dead food. That's why we are weaker and prone to more diseases than people of old.

What i normally advice is for people to buy their chicken at least 3 months in advance if you have the space to keep it. For that 3 months regular feed at least those toxins would have left its body. They also pack catfish with growth hormones too

Nothing to worry about , they are healthy to eat but be careful about imported frozen chicken.
Both in breeding and feeding , scientific research had improved for better results. I am a broiler farmer planning for healthy chicken products accessible to many in Lagos and other states in Nigeria

And this is coming from someone who has reared poultry birds multiple times

We should indeed be concerned about any foul play from farmers
