Stories have emerged about how covert operations conducted by the Department of State Services (DSS), coupled with prompt intelligence sharing with the military and other security agencies, led to peaceful yuletide across the country, especially in the South East region.

Competent sources, who confided in The Guardian, said the secret police has enhanced its intelligence gathering capacity since the assumption of office of the new Director General (DG DSS), Mr Adeola Ajayi.

It was gathered that scores of bandits were killed in Niger State barely 48 hours before Christmas, even as dozens of Eastern Security Network (ESN) members were also taken out before and during the celebration.

According to the source: “The government is happy with the improved synergy that currently exists between the DSS and sister security agencies, and that is attributable to the commitment and patriotic zeal of Mr AO Ajayi, the new DGSS.

“For your information, the DSS had, before Christmas, identified several dangerous camps in parts of the South East general area operated by the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/ESN.

“In a joint operation with DSS personnel, troops were able to undertake clearance operation across IPOB/ESN strongholds at Orsu, Oru East, Oru West and Orlu LGA in Imo State.

“Several AK47 rifles, improvised explosive devices-making materials, as well as shrines were destroyed in the course of the successful kinetic action.

“Also in the Coal City (Enugu), the lead domestic intelligence agency led the Imilike Agu forest clearance operation in operation in Udenu LGA.

“During the referenced operation, dozens of IPOB/ESN commanders were killed, while several weapons of different calibres were destroyed.

I can confirm to you that similar operations were carried out in Ebonyi, Anambra, and Abia states respectively, in a bid to deny the non-state actors freedom of action before, during and after the celebrations nationwide.”

Another source, who spoke in a similar vein, noted: “Bandits, who had gathered at Uregi Village in Rafi LGA, gathered for a meeting, were dealt devastating blows by DSS operatives, who had kept them under surveillance.

“The offensive was the second major outing by the DSS against bandits terrorising residents of the state in less than a week, having earlier neutralized three bandits in Dogon Dawa, Mairiga LGA of the state.

“Some three weeks ago, specifically in the Janyau Fulani Area of Gusau, Gusau-Kaura Namoda Road, in Zamfara State, as well as in Dalori quarters, Maiduguri, Borno State, DSS operatives apprehended notorious bandits terrorising parts of the Northeast and Northwest.”

If it's TRUE, kudos to them.

But we know that peace in southeast has always been there. It's a calm region of peaceful people despite what rubbish the propaganda mills are reporting.

These clowns taking credit for what they did not do. Peace in southeast has nothing to do with DSS.

Fr Ebube Muonso had to mobilized around 1 million naira to help secure the freedom of a priest that was kidnapped recently. Private individuals are doing more than DSS in southeast.

Well done for doing a great job, but don't look away when Fulani herdsmen go about killing innocent villagers. ESN was formed because of the marauders. Before you go after ESN, do well to get rid of the armed marauders.

As for those ones killing people in the name of secession, security operatives should comb the forests across the SE region to take them out. That's their hideout.

These are both in the same short write up above so one really wonders how your mind works.

Good job by the DSS.

But frankly, where was this all the while Ekpa and his boys have been doing damage to the SE? Isn’t this why people are alleging and promoting theories of government collusion? Because they know there can be peace in the SE if government does its job

The reports of DSS covert operations helping to ensure a peaceful Christmas, especially in the Southeast, paint a picture of coordinated and proactive security efforts. It seems that the Department of State Services (DSS) has stepped up its game under the leadership of the new Director General, Mr. Adeola Ajayi, focusing on intelligence gathering and synergy with other security agencies like the military. These operations, particularly in the Southeast, seem to have been carefully planned and executed to prevent any disturbances during the holiday season.

The idea of taking out members of groups like ESN and IPOB, along with neutralizing bandits in other regions, is a clear demonstration of how intelligence sharing and joint operations can have a significant impact on curbing violence. From destroying weapons caches to clearing dangerous camps, it appears the DSS is being strategic in its approach to tackling insecurity, especially in areas that have seen a lot of unrest.

However, the question that comes to mind is how sustainable these efforts are in the long term. Covert operations and raids may provide temporary relief, but without addressing the root causes of insecurity, such as economic hardship, lack of governance, or political instability, the cycle of violence could easily resume. It’s also important to ask whether these operations are being carried out with full respect for human rights or if there’s a risk of collateral damage in the process.

That being said, if these operations helped keep the peace during such a critical period as Christmas, they show that with the right intelligence, coordination, and planning, significant progress can be made. The real challenge, though, will be maintaining this momentum and expanding these efforts to create lasting security across all regions, not just during specific events or seasons.

It’s interesting to read about the DSS covert operations that were reportedly carried out to ensure a peaceful Christmas, especially in the Southeast. The accounts paint a picture of a well-coordinated effort between the DSS, military, and other security agencies, and it’s easy to see how this could be presented as a major success. However, there are a few things to consider when analyzing these reports.

First, while the operation may have been effective in achieving its stated goal of preventing disturbances, it’s important to question the validity of such reports. Often, during periods of heightened security, governments and agencies release success stories to boost their image and show they’re taking action. The language used in these reports, claiming the neutralization of dozens of ESN members, bandits, and the destruction of weapons, could very well be part of a larger narrative that emphasizes the government's control and capacity to handle the security situation. It's crucial to question whether these operations truly led to lasting peace or whether they’re part of a more strategic communication aimed at convincing the public that the security forces are working hard to maintain stability.

Another point to consider is the potential for government propaganda. Governments often use media outlets to release favorable information, especially around significant events like Christmas, to reinforce the image of a government that is in control of the security situation. While it’s possible that the DSS and other agencies carried out these operations, the extent of their success and the true nature of the operations (whether they were as effective or as widespread as claimed) is something we should critically assess. In many cases, reports about security operations don’t always provide enough transparency or evidence to confirm what really took place.

Moreover, while there’s mention of neutralizing bandits and ESN members, it’s important to ask: were all those targeted truly involved in violent activities? In conflict zones, distinguishing between combatants and civilians can be challenging, and it's essential to ensure that innocent people are not caught in the crossfire.

So, while the reports about these covert operations are certainly positive from a security standpoint, it’s worth keeping a healthy dose of skepticism. We should always ask for more concrete evidence of the outcomes and, importantly, ensure that such operations are conducted with full accountability and transparency. It’s easy for the government’s narrative to be shaped in a way that makes it look like everything is under control, but the real question is whether these actions will lead to sustainable peace or if they’re just a temporary fix.

The authorities say they have destroyed hundreds of South called ESN camps, yet nobody has seen a picture of one single camp

The authorities claim the have recovered so many bombs by ESN. If ESN were using bombs, who are they bombing? It is unheard that there was a bomb blast anywhere in the South East, and once they rare occasion you hear such, it's always the authorities telling the story

The authorities claim they have killed dozens of armed ESN fighters. The curious thing about this is that the authorities never seem to suffer any casualties in these gun battles, it is always them overwhelming armed people without suffering a scratch. How is that possible?

The authorities claim that their covert operations made the South East safe. The South East has been judged the safest place in Nigeria. Why isn't this covert operations not working in places suffering worse insecurity such the the NC, NE and NW?

Everyone has their own security challenges but this statement is nothing but stupid propaganda by the authorities

Story for the birds of the air.
You are seeking legitimacy to continue with your killing of unarmed secessionists IPOB people in the southeast; the armed forces of Nigeria are being used in fighting Jihad in the southeast for the descendants of Othman Dan Fodio.
The southeast was the most peaceful part of Nigeria before Muhammadu Buhari commanded soldiers started to kill unarmed IPOB separatists in the southeast.
