When I heard this news, I was compelled to apologize to my kids, especially my eldest, for how I treated her during our after-school tutoring sessions. I recall scolding and spanking her for being slow to respond or not knowing the answers. Ironically, after spanking her, she'd suddenly become alert and recall the answers quickly.

1. Capital punishment in African school system has been the norm for too long, and needs to be changed.
2. Kindergarten and primary school teachers need to be properly trained and licensed.
3. The school itself that had tolerated and possibly encouraged this behavior must also be brought to book.
4. Government needs to review the licensing of these sub standard schools on a yearly basis.
