➜In this interview with IMOLEAYO OYEDEYI, widowed mother of a three-year-old pupil assaulted by a female teacher at Christ-Miltos Primary School, Ikorodu, Lagos, Mrs Adenike Okunlaya, recounts how the incident played out and her daily struggles to fend for her son since her husband’s death three years ago.
Can you explain how the whole incident happened?
The incident happened on Monday (January 6, 2025). I am also a teacher in the school. I teach Nursery Two, while my son is in Nursery One. On that very day, I was in my class while my colleague, the teacher in question, was also in her class. Suddenly, I heard, ‘Write six; write six’. Later, another colleague brought her phone to show me the video. So, I sent it to my phone and forwarded it to one of my friends.
Why is it still considered OK for a teacher to lay hands on a student even with child abuse/assault considered a crime in the same country? 😩😩😩😩😩

My kids are not here but if they were here in Nigeria, I'll say beat them if you must but use cane and be sensible in the beating process.

This woman failed her son abeg. I don't know if she is a weakling, or if it is just condition that has made so 'gentle'.

As for the school, they need to be questioned. Why did it have to take a social media uproar for them to take action, even after the pastor reported??

This kid was failed by those who should have protected him.
She's a poor , uneducated school cleaner single mother

She doesn't want to lose her job

Fight her for what? The teacher should be behind bars for assaulting the kids who is also a Nigerian citizen covered under anti-assault laws.

Teacher, don't teach me nonsense - Fela Kuti.

A teacher who is thoroughly frustrated in life shouldn't be allowed to teach at all.

They carry their frustration to school and vent it on innocent pupils and students.

Sacking her isn't enough!

She must face the full weight of the law!

Gbam!

@hotseat

What's the law? Thou shalt not slap? What's the weight of the law on slapping?

Everything about Nigerians is sensationalism.

We have this repulsive habit of giving maximum energy to minor issues.

A primary school teacher goes overboard with the discipline of a child, yes she did wrong. Ordinarily, her sack should be enough of a disciplinary measure while the school puts more efforts into the reorientation of its staff. But trust Nigerians to always get emotional and overly animated.

Police has entered. Government ministry has entered. Bloggers have now entered. We'll end up seeing dozens of articles related to this one issue on the front page for the next one week .

Oga, read the article from top to bottom and stop arguing blindly. Everything is there and I can't open your head and force the clearly written details into it.
That is literally what you are implying though.
There is no any hidden context what you said is clear.

You first said it wasn't that big of a deal that the teacher shouldn't have been arrested, now that you read that the child was hospitalised cause he has a hearing problem same you is now implying that the woman is "soft" for allowing it.

Stay in one place lol. A child was abused repeatedly until it became serious and your own problem is the animal that was arrested for it you now here saying another thing.

Don't be an hypocrite. It's very certain 99% don't even think slapping or beating children is against any constitution. Even the people who want to put someone behind bars slap every day.

The mother of the boy did not handle it well professionally.

She should be sacked too.

Something happened in the school, you didn't report to the school management, instead you took a recording of the incident and showed it to your pastor who was now the one that called the headmistress.

Is that how it should be?

There is a hierarchy in every workplace. What happens in the class that needs serious attending to should first get to the school management before getting to the public.

Since the school management already had a policy against corporal punishment, why didn't she report the matter to the headmistress?

The poor boy is without a dad.

Hope real help comes his mother's way.

For me,I think the teacher should be released as she must've learnt a very serious painful lesson that she will never forget in her life.

The law and its enforcement of it should not be based on the opinions of individuals. If 99% break the law, 99% should be punished for breaking the law. Pretty straightforward, right? 🙄🙄🙄

I am very sad for the Teacher and dear child. Teachers and Educators must always exercise restraint when engaging with learners. If a person is temperamental then he or she should not teach especially minors. It is easy to lose tempers but when one considers their age and weakness then adequate patience must be applied when teaching them. It is a sad event. I pray the child's ear has not been hurt by the battering....

The teacher is the culprit in this case and should be appropriately docked by the law so she serves as an example for others who have issues with managing their anger issues. undecided

That's a very wicked act which the woman should be punished for. The school authority also shares in this by not training their employees or monitoring their behaviour while in the school.

You want justice for your son, yet you couldn't confront the offender when you saw the video. You relied on public roar to inspire your call for justice.
Madam....you failed your son!
The school management did well enough to sack the teacher before she was arrested. They would have totally cleared their name and integrity by getting her arrested by themselves, however, they did the right thing by relieving her of her post.

There roles to be played in times and season; these roles are mainly played to lead this woman out of the duldrums- the set time. But those that took the ugly roles will also reap the recompense nevertheless- ' woe unto him through which these prophesies will be fulfilled'.
