The planned financial autonomy for Nigeria’s 3rd tier of government takes effect this month, January 2025.

In readiness for this, a dedicated unit has been created in the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation, to handle direct disbursement of funds to the 774 Local Governments (LGs) across the country.

Also, the first meeting of the country’s Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) for this year has been scheduled for Wednesday 15 January 2025, and it is expected to focus on operational details for direct fund allocations to the LGAs.

BACKSTORY

On 11 July 2024, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, in the case of Attorney General of the Federation versus Attorney General of Abia State & 35 Others, reinforced the autonomy of Local Governments in Nigeria, affirming their status as a distinct 3rd tier of government.

The court ordered that Local Governments be paid directly from the Federation Account.

CONFUSION CONTINUES. NOW LOCAL GOVERNMENTS SHOULD PAY THE REMUNERATIONS OF THEIR RESPECTIVE TRADITIONAL RULERS AND SUBMIT THEIR BUDGETS THROUGH THEIR RESPECTIVE TRADITIONAL RULERS TO THE STATE GOVERNMENTS FOR INCORPORATION IN THE STATE BUDGETS AND FOR ONWARD TRANSMISSION TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BUDGET BEFORE BEING SENT TO NASS.
THIS IS THE FUNDAMENTAL OBJECTIVE AND DIRECTIVE PRINCIPLES OF THE CONSTITUTION.

NOONE IS FORCING ANYONE TO BE UNDER ANYONE, BUT THERE MUST BE COOPERATION, COORDINATION AND COMBINATION OF ALL NATIONAL POLICIES IMPLEMENTATION..

Let's see who will work and who will embezzle...because every leader feels any sum coming to the office is for him.

Also, the burden on the FG will be reduced! If your LG is bad, it's the fault of your LG chairman, before the state gov, and before the FG.

Local government chairmen go live large this period more than ever , they will live in their state capitals or Abuja or Lagos and rule from there , LGA officials go become kings again and treat teachers like dirt paying them whatever they like , Nigeria was created deliberately to keep the black ppl in Africa down

What is the essence of one APC governor can wake up and suspend all local government chairmen and nothing happens. Is that not enough to indirectly control how the funds are used

Public school teachers' salaries are not paid by local govt, but state govt.

And why not actually give the LGAs the opportunity to work before crucifying them with your negative mindset?

Nice!

Now we can start holding our LG officials to account on various issues.

Same way it operates in the US, UK etc.

In those places, when something goes wrong with the infrastructure, eg bad roads (which they also have), people blame their local council or county.

In Nigeria we blame the President.

Stop spreading fake news, the Governor has no such power, he folded when the pressure was too much, what he later did was using the councillors to remove the chairmen which is although very wrong but constitutional, but we are still in the early days of this local government autonomy which means in the future it will become much more harder to remove these Chairmen as they settle in and build a structure for themselves, there was a time when Obasanjo was influencing house of assemblies to remove any governor he doesn't like, that is much more difficult for any president to do now.

always wailing fake news ,their impeachment followed the suspension abi what is this one saying.
Will the early reckless action not make governors influence the activities of the local government chairmen or not?
Take it or leave the local government autonomy is already being bastardized by the irresponsible deceitful APC government.

Now we should start to see some innovative LGAs generating their own power, using renewable energy sources, and achieving 24/7 power within their LGAs.

An LGA can build a SOLAR FARM or even a WIND FARM or SMALL HYDRO PLANT that will serve an entire LGA with 24/7 power.

It's a shame that many people don't get the point up till this moment. For the very fact that governors conducted the LG elections that brought those chairmen into office, the governors will continuously tell them how to distribute their allocations.

Y'all can keep deceiving yourselves thinking that LG bosses are truly autonomous just like we have run this country for over 100 years and think we are making progress as a country.

Rome was not built in a day, the difference between you and many other achievers is that while you're pessimistic and shortsighted, people are looking very deep into the future and they know that with long term strategic planning everything will be fine.

I'm in Edo state, when the Edo state government announced their suspension the chairmen went to court and they were Swiftly reinstated, I can tell you this because I pass through Etsakor West LGA secretariat almost every day, when they were reinstated the government did the constitutional thing, which is remove the Chairmen with the councillors which is totally legal, in the long run the third tier of government will become more powerful and very competitive with financial autonomy, give it 5 years and allow the system to work then you can criticise, or what would you rather want the government to do? To not do anything at all?

Can the governor actually use councillors to remove lg chairmen? You said yes and for me I don't need any other epistle to conclude that the lg autonomy under the APC is a charade .
The lg autonomy was received by Nigerians as a great news but it is now obvious the useless party will make mess of it.
See there is no leadership in Nigeria presently but nothing you fit tell me.

I understand that you're an opposition but please we must opt out of this firefighter approach to things in Nigeria, governors of Plateau, Oyo, Anambra, Anambra and Ekiti were removed in the early 2000s, their impeachment was greatly influenced by the President at that time, today it's much more harder to pull that off.
