Is there any particular reason the anglophone countries like Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Uganda & Ghana cannot organize regular military war games and counterinsurgency exchanges between them
I see Kenya has a dedicated simulation area it regularly trains with U.K troops.
What is the drawback?

KDF introduced a cutting-edge military training system, Tactical Engagement Simulation (TES), to hone the combat skills of soldiers & units, & derive the best value from live training

Denel upgrading Umkhonto missile

Denel is upgrading its Umkhonto surface-to-air missile (SAM) from the current Infra-Red (IR) Block II version to a more powerful weapon with better intercept capabilities.

This will be good news for Denel’s customers, including the South African Navy (SAN), the Finnish Navy and the Algerian Navy, all of whom currently use the Umkhonto. Also, the SA Army is interested in the ground-based version to compliment its current Ground Based Air Defence System (GBADS).

On 5th of January , News emerged that two days prior hundreds of Boko Haram militants had overrun several towns in northeast Nigeria and captured the military base in Baga. This would then be the beginning of the end of Boko haram. With an election on the Horizon, GEJ finally decided to “play ball” and wouldn’t exit the stage without a fight.

On 23 January 2015, it was disclosed that Nigerian troops were in final preparations for a major offensive against Boko Haram insurgents in North Eastern Nigeria. This Operation will later become the most offensive mission ever to be undertaken by any African troop. The goal of the mission was to eliminate "safe havens and escape routes of terrorists in or out of Nigeria" and provide "once and for all comprehensive operations" to eliminate the Boko Haram threat. Before now, Boko haram has captured over 20 local government areas in Nigeria.

25 January – Boko Haram rebels launched a large offensive against Nigerian forces in Maiduguri leading to the deaths of at least eight civilians, up to 53 militants, and an unknown number of soldiers. Although the attack failed, the rebels captured the nearby strategic town of Monguno. The status of the 1,400 soldiers stationed in Monguno was unknown. As a result of these attacks, Boko Haram controlled four out of five roads leading into the major city, prompting fears that it would be taken as well.

29 January – The Nigerian military had , captured the border town of Michika from Boko Haram rebels.

By 6 February, Nigerian warplanes and ground troops had forced Boko Haram forces to abandon about a dozen towns and villages.

On 7 February, Nigeria announced that the elections would be postponed for six weeks, citing unsafe voting conditions in the northeast.
On 16 February – Nigeria regained the key town of Monguno, Borno, from Boko Haram. The town had previously fallen to the militants on 25 January.

On 21 February, The Nigerian Army retook Baga, which had fallen to Boko Haram on 3 January.
During the week of 15 February, more than 300 Boko Haram fighters were killed by Nigerian forces as eleven more towns were recaptured. Various weapon stockpiles were seized or destroyed, and additional insurgents were arrested.

On 6 March, the African Union officially endorsed sending 8,000 troops to help secure the Nigerian border, but declined to allow the troops to enter Nigeria. The truth is most countries in Africa were afraid of the capabilities of boko haram. Boko Haram had earlier released a video claiming that they had stockpiled “enough weapons to take on Nigeria and its neighbours" and ofcourse they weren’t bluffing.

March 2 was the Battle of Konduga – 73 Boko Haram militants disguised as herders were killed near Konduga town in Borno

As Boko Haram continued to lose territory, the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant on 7 March. The then Nigerian army spokesperson Sami Usman Kukasheka said the pledge was a sign of weakness and that Shekau was like a "drowning man".

On 16 March 2015– Nigeria, began to liberate Damasak, Borno, from Boko Haram militants

On 17 March, The Nigerian military reclaimed the small city of Bama, Borno, from Boko Haram.

In the heat of serious battle, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau had promised to disrupt the elections, then scheduled for March 28, in retaliation.

On 27 March, the Nigerian army captured Gwoza, which was believed to be the location of Boko Haram headquarters. According to the army, the victory meant that "virtually all" of Boko Haram's territory had been recaptured a day before the elections.

In just 6 weeks, Nigerian military retook all captured local government areas and territories once captured hereby limiting Boko haram to the Sambisa forest.

On 22 April, After elections, the Nigerian military began to push into the Sambisa Forest, a dense forest covering 23,000 square miles. But Boko haram wouldnt go down without a fight.

On 25 April, Boko Haram launched a counterattack on an island in Lake Chad. Boko Haram also retook the town of Marte in Borno, invading with tanks and over 2,000 troops. Yes over 2000 troops facing our gallant troop.
After the attack, Niger recommended that the island of Lake Chad be evacuated. By early May, more than 5,000 people had left the island towns and reached N'guigmi, Niger by foot. An additional 11,500 evacuees were expected.

Then the mother of all fights started. A fresh push into Sambisa Forest by Nigerian forces began on 27 April.
As the Nigerian army advanced into the forest, it began to free a large number of women and children held as hostages by Boko Haram.

On April 28, just under 300 hostages were freed. It is unclear if the freed prisoners were captured in Boko Haram raids or if they were area residents. A battle on April 29 killed over 400 Boko Haram insurgents, while freeing an undisclosed number of female captives.

On 30 April, another 234 women and children were freed from Boko Haram captivity as the military destroyed 13 Boko Haram camps. In total, close to 700 hostages had been rescued. Efforts to press into the Sambisa Forest were slowed, as the military encountered landmines and booby traps. Boko Haram pushed back, launching suicide attacks on civilians and attempting to capture the Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri.

On May 15, Boko Haram forces recaptured the border town of Marte, demonstrating that efforts to contain the militant group to the forest were not completely successful.
The following day, the Nigerian military responded by destroying ten Boko Haram camps in the Sambisa Forest.

In September 2015, the Director of Information at the Defence Headquarters of Nigeria announced that ALL Boko Haram camps had been destroyed.

On 24 December 2015, Muhammadu Buhari, the President of Nigeria, claimed that Boko Haram was "technically defeated."

We continue to honor the men of valor that have made our country.

God bless the Nigerian Armed forces

Sparcx developing AI-based radar target classification system

One of the key projects being pursued by Pretoria-based electronic engineering company Sparcx is an artificial intelligence (AI)-based radar target classification (RTC) system that has broad applications in the defence and security sectors.

This was detailed by Sparcx Managing Director Sujo Mulamattathil, who was speaking at the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative (AISI) Industry Day hosted by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) on 29 November.

The RTC system is currently being developed for a defence customer, although it could also be used in public safety. Mulamattathil said RTC systems often struggle to accurately classify targets due to several challenges such as clutter, noise, multiple targets and rapidly changing environments. This lack of precision impacts safety and accuracy.

Consequently, Sparcx is building an AI-based system to identify targets faster and more accurately, and is making use of expertise at the CSIR and Reutech Radar Systems to do this – funding for the project is being provided by Sparcx, the AISI/Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, and Reutech Radar Systems.

Mulamattathil said the next phase of development is size, weight and power optimisation, industrialisation, manufacturing, marketing and sales. The company’s business model is to sell its RTC system hardware with radars manufactured by companies like Reutech.

He added that a combination of radar and camera technologies to identify and better classify targets is being integrated. Use cases include farm security, wildlife monitoring, border security etc. as the system is able to tell the difference between a vehicle and, say, an animal or a human being.

Sparcx is a wholly black military veteran owned and managed electronic engineering company focussing on the aerospace, defence, and public safety sectors. It is developing several technologies, some in collaboration with the CSIR, to serve the African market.

For example, Mulamattathil explained that this year Sparcx has been developing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based automatic speech recognition system for an aerospace customer to reduce incursions/accidents at airports. Other projects include implementing less lethal devices for a law enforcement agency, and industrialising AI-based smart water network sensors to reduce leakage losses for municipalities and water boards (up to 60% of municipal water is lost countrywide due to leaks).

In 2024 Sparcx was chosen as the sole South African representative in a cohort of 10 businesses from Africa in Qualcomm’s “Make in Africa 2024” start-up incubation programme. It was selected on the basis of its RTC system.

Since its inception in 2015, Sparcx has developed a number of different technologies, such as a radio frequency measurement system for the government, and an AI-driven runway occupancy alerting system.

The temperatures were never like this when we moved into the Lowveld in the late 90s... Even 30°C was rare... Nowadays you can easily hit those degrees before 10AM... The temperatures get extreme the further east you go towards Mozambique and eSwatini. I've come to a concussion that the Lowveld will be un-habitable in the next 50 years.

Mostly financial.

When you hear that US gave this or that amount in foreign aid, much of that isn’t in cash. Foreign assistance includes military exercises. When western countries conduct these joint excercises, African countries do not pay a dime. All of the logistical expense is covered and all you need to do is show up.

However, when you want to organize one yourself, you will have to decide how the bill will be footed or shared. If you are in charge of the Kenyan military and Nigeria invites you to train with them but you foot your own bill, there isn’t much of incentive there considering the financial burden and the fact that Nigeria is really not that ahead of you in capacity. Nigeria on the other hand may not see the point of paying other African countries to come train with them.

Not a unit. On the SAPS organogram, it's the division that houses together TRT, NIU, VIP Protection and Flying Squad. The team sent by the division is cobbled together from those units.

Ukraine says Zelensky will visit South Africa, but no formal invite yet
Ukraine has said that President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to visit South Africa, though official details and timing are still pending. Zelensky is hoping to discuss the issue with President Cyril Ramaphosa at the upcoming World Economic Forum in Davos.

Ukraine said on Monday, 20 January that South Africa has confirmed that President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit the country.

Ukraine has long awaited an invitation from South Africa, and in an online briefing for South African and Indian journalists on Monday, the head of Zelensky’s office, Andriy Yermak, said that “through the diplomatic channels we received confirmation that President Zelensky will be welcome to visit South Africa”.

He said it was “very important” to Zelensky that he visited SA.

But South African Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said that although discussions were held about a potential visit by Zelensky to SA, no official invitation had yet been issued.

“A discussion has been held, but we are yet to officialise the invitation as well as how and when that visit will happen,” Magwenya told Daily Maverick on Monday.

Yermak told journalists Zelensky was hoping to iron out the date and other details of his potential visit to South Africa in a meeting with Ramaphosa on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, this week. Zelensky had requested a bilateral meeting with Ramaphosa and was hoping to receive confirmation that it would happen, according to Yermak.

In response, Magwenya confirmed Zelensky’s request to meet Ramaphosa in Davos, but suggested that a meeting between the two leaders might not take place due to changes in Ramaphosa’s schedule.

“However, the President’s programme, with respect to bilateral meetings, has had to be adjusted because he has cut back his visit to Davos by a day.

“So we will look at the programme when we get there in terms of how we manage requests for bilateral meetings,” he said.

On Monday afternoon, Yermak told journalists that a meeting between Ramaphosa and Zelensky would be important to discuss a potential strategy on how to continue to press Russia on ending the war by a “just peace” – which did not mean a temporary ceasefire or merely freezing the conflict.

I ask because you are using the dehumanising expression "orcs" to describe Russians. That expression has been repeatedly used by Ukrainian propagandists who seem to love "lord of the rings".

So either you are being paid, either you've been brainwashed by propaganda.
