Ikwerre Is Not Igbo!; The Way Forward by shortgun(m): 7:56am On Jan 16 |
The recent election of John Azuta-Mbata, a former senator from Rivers East,an Ikwerre man as President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has reignited a longstanding debate on social media about whether Ikwerres are Igbos or not. Many groups in Ikwerre land have issued opposing public statements, with some affirming their Igbo identity and others rejecting it. Also, theres no day that passes in this forum without seeing multiple posts on the topic. The solution to ending this debate is very simple and straightforward: Let the Ikwerres who identify as Igbo be Igbos and those who identify as non Igbo remain non Igbos. No one should be forced to embrace an ancestry they reject or abandon an ancestral heritage they cherish. Igbos for all I know are not looking for more igbos or looking for a people to conquer, take over their territory and enforce their culture and religion. It is the height of ignorance for anyone to assume that indigenous Igbos are only found in the five southeast states of Nigeria! There are indigenous Igbos in Equatorial Guinea,Cameroun, Gabon and Benue State and Kogi state who till today identify as Igbos. Igbo is not a tribe, it's a nation of many tribes and tribes with many dialects...... The assumption that the Igbo is ruthless and dominant is contradicted by reality. If the Igbo are ruteless and dominant, they would easily have swallowed up and assimilated all other ethnicities around them with their population. At the core of Igbo philosophy has always been "biri kam biri"(live and let live).... this has guided the coexistence with others. The survival and thriving of smaller ethnic groups around much larger Igbo communities suggest a legacy of collaboration and non-domineering relationships. Historically, the Igbo have emphasized trade, diplomacy and cultural exchange over conquest or domination, reinforcing the idea that they prioritize coexistence over bloody conquests or hegemony. It is high time we Nigerians on social media redirected our attention to more pressing significant developmental issues instead of focusing on divisive arguments about who is Igbo or not Igbo. 3 Likes 1 Share |

Re: Ikwerre Is Not Igbo!; The Way Forward by MadPolitician: 8:18am On Jan 16 |
justtoodark:There is nothing to be "left alone" my brother. The point is very clear and sacrosanct: ikwerreland is igboland! QED!! Get used to that. If you migrated to Portharcourt from Tanganyika or Burma, that's your own kettle of fish. If you're living in ikwerre land you no more want to be associated with the great igbos for whatever pecuniary interests, your sole option is very clear; pack your bag and wriggle back to whence you claim to have originated from. It is that simple! Ikwerre has no boundaries with Benin, and no person from Benin is claiming Ikwerres. All migrants to ikwerre land must respect the status quo or get ready for eternal roforofo, because no inch of igboland will be ceded to any fat rat in the name of making peace. shortgun: There's nothing to consider here. Ikwerre has always been recorded as igbos ab initio. Trying to dignify all sorts of agbadorian treacherous interjections by "considering " this or that, is in my own view, very jejune. The mutant you were talking to is from the west. He wants you to accept that Lagos is yoruba. Yet he has problems accepting that Ikwerre is igbo. An igbo man can understand an Ikwerre but he doesn't understand a word in Egun. Egun are indigenous to the same Lagos he claims to be his! So this is dirty politics. Don't credit their tribal shenanigans with any sort of attention. 1 Like |

justtoodark: Who are the Ikwere leaders? Your likes are very demented and unproductive in their useless lives. Go get a life. The only thing you Yorubads have contributed to Nigeria is Divisions. Your divide and conquer strategies against Igbos have failed and finally been collapsed by the recent developments in Ohaneze leadership. Idiotsike you are afraid of what is coming soon.... Igbo is finally free. 2 Likes |

För an Ikwerre man to be the president of Igbos, it simply makes a loud statement. NOBODY, and I mean, NOBODY should ever say Ikwerres are not Igbos EVER again. Some people say they choose not to be, just like some Nigerians choose not to be Nigerians. We now know, it is now a matter of an individual denouncing his heritage. Let an Ijebu man also tell us he is not yoruba. 2 Likes 1 Share |

What we should all understand is that some Ikwerre trace their ancestors to Bini. So if the Ikwerre that traces his ancestry to Bini says he is a Bini man, and not an Igbo man, who are we to judge? Igbos should embrace the Ikwerre that says he is Igbo, such as Azuta Mbata, and forget the Ikwerre that says he is Bini, such as Wike 1 Like |

Godwin4444: Hahahahahahahahaha. Who are "u Igbos"? And what 'has boomerang'? You should have stopped it from the onset, or do you think betrayal doesn't come with identitet crisis. Dan fodio made your ancestors betray their neighbours, and you were taught to maintain the betrayal. I was thinking by now your kinsmen would have paid the Oba of Benin a courtesy visit to reinforce your ancestry. This one don catch una. Make una come denying again. Wike no fit do dis one for una. ruffhandu: The obsession with ikwerre is still beyond me even as an igbo man,why don't we allow the ikwerre to identify as they choose and who told you the igbos are recuiting? Let the ikwerres be ikwerres and igbos be igbos,it was because of this same people we lost the civil war and they stole our properties yet today some igbos still want to co-opt them to igbos I'll agree that some ikwerres choose to identify as igbos but the vast majority of them like 80-90 percent don't like igbos so learn to identify with people at an individual level I wish all other igbo people think like me I'm okay with the 5 states God has blessed us with |
Re: Ikwerre Is Not Igbo!; The Way Forward by shortgun(m): 12:45pm On Jan 16 |
Godwin4444:Some of the things you guys say about the relationship between the Igbo and her neighbors doesn't make any logical sense. As I mentioned earlier the fact that smaller ethnic groups surround the Igbo despite the Igbos larger population suggests two possibilities: either the Igbo lacked the ability to conquer and assimilate them or they were simply not interested in doing so. Either way, it proves that the Igbo have never been a threat to the survival of these groups. Historically, among Nigeria's major ethnic groups, the Igbo stand out as the only one without a vast empire or kingdom spanning thousands of kilometers. Such empires were typically built through bloody conquest where smaller groups were overpowered and subjugated to pay allegiance to the larger dominant power. |

shortgun:yes Because Igbos declared south south as Igbo land even when they were d people that stopped adaka baro cos he wanted freedom earlier? It has many things to do with this discussion because if u treated them right them they won't b scared to associate with u now If u treated them right them u won't have to b using silly tricks to call them Igbos by fire by thunder, they would have been d ones fighting to b Igbo n not d other way round |

Re: Ikwerre Is Not Igbo!; The Way Forward by ruffhandu: 3:37pm On Jan 16 |
chidonez: I don't think anybody is forcing anyone. What I see here is that a group of people want to speak for others. Saying 'we ikwerres are not Igbos' means they are speaking for the Ikwerres that say 'we are Igbos'. An individual can say 'I don't want to be identified as Igbo', which is fine. But if you objectively look at it, ikwerre language is simply an Igbo dialect, simple. Many Igbos see ikwerres as betrayers, sorry this is just my observation. |
