Firstly, 6 minutes ago I used to be an ex-muslim but I had to take the Shahada to raise my concern concerning this controversial topic. I'd be a muslim for a day to make my contribution here... The notion of implementing Islamic Shari'a law in the Southwest region of Nigeria is utterly incongruous with the prevailing values, customs, and traditions of the Yoruba people. A multitude of concerns arise from the inherent contradictions between Shari'a law and Yoruba cultural norms. One of the primary concerns lies in Shari'a's permissive stance on consanguineous marriages, which are unequivocally considered taboo in Yoruba culture. Specifically, Shari'a law deems it acceptable to marry cousins, step-sisters, and even daughters from illegitimate marriages. This starkly contrasts with Yoruba traditions, which strictly prohibit such unions due to the potential genetic consequences and the importance of maintaining familial harmony. Another significant issue is the age of consent. In Yoruba land, it is customary to delay marriage until a girl has undergone the proper puberty rites, typically around the age of 16. This ensures her physical and emotional maturity before entering into marriage. In contrast, Shari'a law does not specify a minimum age for marriage, potentially leading to child marriages that violate Yoruba values and jeopardize the well-being of young girls. Furthermore, the suppression of Yoruba orisha practices in Ilorin and Northern regions serves as a precedent for reciprocal measures in Yoruba land. The prohibition of these traditional practices, deemed "pagan" by Islamic authorities, underscores the incompatibility of Shari'a law with Yoruba customs and highlights the potential for religious tensions. In addition, the Nigerian constitution's inclusion of blasphemy laws has already sparked widespread discontent among the Yoruba people. The legalization of Shari'a law in Yoruba land would inevitably lead to the sporadic enforcement of blasphemy laws, potentially triggering religious conflicts that could have far-reaching consequences. Moreover, the draconian punishments prescribed by Shari'a law, such as the chopping off of hands for stealing, are deemed utterly reprehensible in Yoruba culture. Such brutal penalties are an affront to the values of compassion, forgiveness, and rehabilitation that underpin Yoruba traditions. Ultimately, Islamic Shari'a laws are fundamentally incompatible with the values, customs, and traditions of the Yoruba people. The implementation of Shari'a law in Yoruba land would constitute a gross violation of the region's cultural identity and would always be vehemently resisted by the Yoruba people. I believe I've not violated any nairaland rule because I took the shahada before making my contribution and I haven't insulted anyone on here. Masalam. 6 Likes |

Sharia in Yorubaland won't work. Continue to enjoy your conquest in Ilorin, beyond that, perish that thought. We Yorubas tolerate a lot of things, we are multireligious but we won't welcome anything that would affect our socioeconomic freedoms. We are liberals...we don't tolerate things like this, and it will never stand. In places where they have these laws, what change has it brought to their lives? Was it made for just the poor people? Has it improved the economies of those areas? 1 Like |

All these fake imported religions have destroyed the normal mental processes of a lot of our people. If you are following any of the two religion, you should know for fact that: There is no heaven, there is no hell, there is no God (or god), there is no Allah, there are no angels, there are no demons, there are no spirits, there is no life after death, juju don't work, there is no eternal judgment, there is no karma, there was no historical Jesus. All those are figment of human imaginations and tools use by a very few some to control the very many others. The earlier you understand and accept these facts as facts, the happier and merrier your life and existence will be. The religion you're currently claiming is the religion of your parents, if you were born into a different family of another religion (say Hinduism), that is the exact religion you will practice. You were born without a religion in you, your factory reset has no religion in it. If you were to be a phone and they do factory reset on you today being a phone, there will not be anything found related to religion in your settings, files and file systems anymore; you learn religion only after your birth growing up. Islam is idolatry and paganism, Christianity aswell is idolatry - All the world religion is idolatry, including all the Abrahamic religion. Holy communion is idolatory, bowing for a stone call Kaaba of the Bedouin tribes is also idolatory, killing of rams is idolatory, kissing or licking of a stone at mecca is idolatory, throwing of stone at pilgrimage is idolatory too. Infact, Illah is what the Arabic call God and not Allah. Allah was one of the diety been worshiped before the invention of Islam. That is why muslims will say something like "la ilah ila huwa" meaning Allah is one Illah (God). Have you ask yourself why Prophet Mohammed's father who was an idol worshiper and who lived before the invention of islam has Allah in is name Abdullai== Abdu Allah? It is because Allah has been an idol worshiped by paganists before the Prophet received his revelations. All Abrahamic religion are idolatory, they only package them well and condemn your heritage as evil, whereas, Nigeria was better in terms of morality, honesty and integrity before they brought the foreign religions. In peace loving, emotional intelligence, love for neighbor, respect for sanctity of life, we are even better than those who brought those religion with primitive leaders whose morality and characters are highly questionable. 2 Likes |

Sharia law is a relic of the past that has no place in a modern and progressive society like Yorubaland. It is a system that promotes backwardness, undermines justice, and stifles cultural and societal development. Historically, the Yoruba people have thrived on their Omoluabi ethos—values of integrity, progressiveness, and respect for humanity. Sharia law contradicts these principles and threatens the foundation of our heritage. The government must take a firm stand against individuals or groups advocating for the imposition of Sharia law in Yorubaland. It is crucial to investigate and monitor clerics who push this agenda, as many of them are likely influenced by external forces seeking to destabilize our region. These individuals should be held accountable, and where necessary, prosecuted, as their actions endanger the unity and progress of our people. Clerics championing Sharia law should focus on meaningful contributions to society rather than exploiting religion as a means to manipulate and scam the vulnerable. Yorubaland has always been a beacon of innovation, education, and cultural pride, and we must not allow regressive ideologies to erode the progress built by our ancestors. Those who insist on practicing Sharia law are encouraged to relocate to regions or countries where it is already established, rather than impose it on communities that reject it. The example of northern Nigeria, where Sharia law is practiced, provides a clear warning. Despite its implementation, the region has not recorded any significant progress attributable to the law. Instead, it has created a system of inequality, where the poor and vulnerable are oppressed while the powerful and corrupt evade justice. No northern governor or political elite has ever faced Sharia's full weight, exposing its inherent flaws and hypocrisy. Yorubaland must stand united against the infiltration of these regressive ideologies. We must protect our cultural heritage, foster progress, and ensure that the Omoluabi values remain the guiding principles of our society. The future of Yorubaland lies in education, inclusivity, and innovation—not in the adoption of archaic laws that have repeatedly failed to deliver justice or development. 1 Like |

UncleAyo: Psalm 14:1 The fool has said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that does good. Proverbs 26:4-5 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes. The self-confident fool thinks too highly of himself and his opinions, and he shares them freely |

The establishment of Sharia law in Yorubaland poses significant dangers to everyone, including Muslims, and threatens the unity, progress, and cultural heritage of the region. Here are strong warnings about its implications: 1. Erosion of Justice and Equality Sharia law is inherently biased and often applied selectively. In regions where it has been implemented, it has consistently targeted the poor and powerless while shielding the rich and influential from its consequences. This unequal application of justice would sow division and distrust in Yorubaland, undermining the fairness that Yoruba society values deeply. 2. Threat to Religious Freedom Even for Muslims, the imposition of Sharia law could lead to rigid interpretations of Islam, silencing diverse perspectives and practices within the faith. Yoruba Muslims, who have traditionally coexisted peacefully with people of other religions, may face increased pressure to conform to stricter interpretations of Islam, eroding the religious tolerance that defines Yorubaland. 3. Loss of Yoruba Cultural Identity Yoruba culture is built on Omoluabi values—integrity, respect, and communal progress. The imposition of Sharia law threatens to replace these values with an alien system that prioritizes religious dogma over cultural heritage. This could result in the gradual erasure of the unique traditions, languages, and practices that make Yorubaland a beacon of cultural pride. 4. Impediment to Progress and Development Sharia law has not proven to foster economic growth or development in regions where it is practiced. Instead, it has often led to stagnation and regression. Yorubaland, known for its progressiveness and innovation, would risk falling behind in areas such as education, science, and technology if it adopts a system that prioritizes strict religious governance over modern development. 5. Increase in Social Tensions and Violence The establishment of Sharia law could exacerbate religious and ethnic tensions in Yorubaland, leading to divisions and potential violence. History has shown that attempts to impose religious laws on diverse populations often result in conflict, destabilizing communities and threatening peace. 6. Exploitation by Extremists The push for Sharia law is often driven by extremists and external forces with hidden agendas. These groups exploit religion to gain political control, grab land, and manipulate communities. Allowing Sharia law in Yorubaland could open the door for such groups to infiltrate and destabilize the region. 7. Disruption of Peaceful Coexistence Yorubaland is home to people of various faiths who have lived together in harmony for generations. The introduction of Sharia law would create divisions among Muslims, Christians, and adherents of traditional Yoruba beliefs, disrupting the peaceful coexistence that has long been a hallmark of the region. 8. Economic Consequences Sharia law’s restrictive nature could discourage investment and economic growth in Yorubaland. Businesses and investors value stability, fairness, and inclusivity, all of which would be undermined by the adoption of a religious legal system. 9. Alienation of Moderate Muslims Moderate Muslims in Yorubaland who do not subscribe to extreme interpretations of Islam could face persecution or be ostracized by their communities. This would lead to internal divisions within the Muslim population and further erode the social fabric of Yorubaland. 10. Historical Precedent of Failure The example of Northern Nigeria, where Sharia law is practiced, serves as a warning. Despite its implementation, the region has not experienced significant progress, and corruption remains rampant among the elite. Sharia law has failed to bring about meaningful change and has only deepened inequalities and divisions. Final Warning Yorubaland’s strength lies in its diversity, progressiveness, and cultural pride. The imposition of Sharia law would dismantle these values and pave the way for stagnation, oppression, and conflict. It is not a solution for justice or development but a tool for control and regression. To protect the unity, peace, and future of Yorubaland, its people must reject any attempt to establish Sharia law and stand firm in upholding their Omoluabi ethos and secular governance. 1 Like |
