This is the map of the South in the fifteenth century by the Portuguese who were the first Europeans who came to trade with the Benin Kingdom and today all the other names are still the same. So when and how did Ibo change Igbo?

That's just a linguistics shift. There are no "gb" in foreign languages. The closest is "b".

The term "Igbo" is derived from the native pronunciation of the ethnic group’s name. The spelling "Ibo" was a result of colonial influence and the English language's phonetic interpretation. As awareness of indigenous identity grew, the preference for "Igbo" became more pronounced.

Secondly, prominent Igbo writers and intellectuals, such as Chinua Achebe, played a significant role in promoting the use of "Igbo" in literature and public discourse, further solidifying its acceptance.

Some people won't ask how Oshogbo became Osogbo, or how Ishekiri became Itshekiri

Oka became Awka
Okunano became Awkunanaw
Dahomey became Benin
Ghana became Gold coast
Igweocha became Port Harcourt
Owerre became Owerri

It has always been Igbo, the white men couldn't handle the pronunciation of the "gb", so they changed it to "b"

Yeah, the whites found Port Harcourt in 1902 that they landed there, while Igbo and Ijaws has been marking their boundaries and fishing, living quietly and populating the place since 800 BC? grin

Yeye people.

Igbo people had their name for Port Harcourt until the whites landed with their boats and "discovered" River Niger and Lagos island grin

We hear you Mr Nigerian. Allow us determine that. Go and settle the rift between your people and the yoruba people about sharia implementation.

So you feel the Portuguese should know the indigenous people's name better than themselves?

Nope! Port Harcourt was renamed after the British colonial master Harcourt who presided over that area at some point

It was Ibo and Ebo when foreigners were the one writing.

When the natives became literates, they wrote it better and it has remained Igbo ever, afterwards.
Re: How And When Did Ibo Change To Igbo by ValarDoharis: 5:11pm On Feb 01
So Ijaws called it Port Harcourt from 1000yrs ago? Because you said Port Harcourt has always been called so? How dumb!

Check the map it shows IGBON-IBO who were the first to migrate across the River Niger to the Benin Kingdom then.
The Portuguese got all the other names of the tribes right including IGBON-IBO, so it can not be that they only got the Ibo name wrong.
The later Ibo writers must have changed it to Igbo when the English came later and created the eastern region.

Does that map look like 15th century to you?

Besides, what will this narrative you're pushing do for you or Nigerians at a time like this?

Yes it is a 15th century Portuguese map. Research is important to help dig into history inorder to correct errors made later. The map shows that it's Ibo and not Igbo.

Do you know the meaning of Igbo in the west?

You guys should focus!

Focus on how to get Nigeria working. Have you seen what China is doing?

Inflation is over 34%, a litre of petrol is over 1000, minimum wage remains unimplemented but you concern is Igbos?

Focus!!!

To make Nigeria work, it's very important to research the history of the area now called Nigeria so that errors can be corrected. What if it's the name Igbo that is causing all the problems in the south east now, because that was not the name given to it by the original ancestors who started the Ibo tribe. in the south east.
