When is it projected to land? Prayerfully it lands on the sea.
That would be catastrophic leading to a great deadly flood

Ok deep deep sea is ok

It doesn't have to land to bring the destruction. Once it bursts our atmosphere, the sonic boom alone will be catastrophic.

It is things like this that might eventually lead to the end of the world and human existence. There are millions of asteroids orbiting out there and we can't continue to be lucky each time.

Another sure factor that can lead to the end of the world and human existence is the death of the sun just like every other star out there. Scientists currently put the remaining lifespan at several million years so it is nothing to worry about.

Asteroid 2024 YR4 is a near-Earth object that has a very small chance (currently estimated at 2.3%) of impacting Earth on December 22, 2032. However, NASA experts believe that with more observations, this probability is likely to drop to zero, as has happened with many other asteroids previously flagged as potential threats
BL

The asteroid is estimated to be between 130 and 300 feet (40-100 meters) in size. If it were on the smaller end, an impact would likely be similar to the Tunguska event in 1908, which flattened a large forested area in Siberia. If it’s closer to the larger estimate, the consequences would be more severe

NASA and other space agencies are continuing to monitor the asteroid, and the James Webb Space Telescope will take more precise measurements in March 2025. These observations will help scientists better determine the asteroid's orbit and whether any planetary defense actions might be necessary

As them dey panic now, i just dey laugh because i wonder if they did not see it before.

Itr seems the closer it gets, the more sure they are it will hit earth.

In 2021, they said it will pass by very close but miss earth, now e don change.

Lagos keh?

No need to panic.

If at all, it will drop into the Atlantic ocean far from our stores.
That means Lagos will still be wiped out, but by water.
Nothing to worry about anyways. Nothing will happen to our Lagos.

I saw truth in it. The way it appeared in my reasoning. Even the sun. The sun is going through some metamorphosis(processes) that may not align well with earth later in the future.
Even we human beings, we distrupt the climate, weather, and space with our activities. Our industries produces some harmful chemical waste that is deteriorating the surface of the earth!

Editorialtimes:
The odds of asteroid 2024 YR4 colliding with Earth have surged, reaching a historic probability threshold that has raised concerns among scientists and global space agencies. According to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), the asteroid now has a 1 in 32 (3.1%) chance of impact, a sharp increase from earlier predictions.

Initially discovered in December 2024, its impact probability was 1.2% (1 in 83) before doubling to 2.3% on February 7, then rising to 2.6% earlier this week, and now hitting its highest recorded figure. These odds make 2024 YR4 the most dangerous asteroid currently tracked, surpassing even the 2004 predictions for Apophis, which had a 2.7% chance of striking Earth before later calculations ruled it out.

Lagos at Risk if Asteroid Strikes

Measuring between 131 and 295 feet in diameter, YR4 is large enough to generate an 8-megaton explosion, equivalent to 500 times the power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb.

Among the major cities in the asteroid’s projected trajectory is Lagos, Nigeria, one of the world’s most densely populated urban centers. With over 20 million residents, an impact on Lagos Island, Ikeja, or Victoria Island could result in catastrophic destruction, wiping out entire districts and severely affecting surrounding areas.

No Immediate Cause for Panic—Yet

Despite the alarming statistics, scientists urge the public not to panic.

Experts predict that the impact probability may continue to rise before eventually dropping to zero, as has been the case with many previously tracked asteroids.

To refine the risk assessment, NASA and the ESA will deploy the James Webb Space Telescope, using its infrared instruments to accurately measure the asteroid’s size and determine its exact trajectory.

The ESA confirmed that NASA, ESA, and other space agencies will analyze this data to assess the risk and prepare any necessary response measures.

Our government should better shed more light to us. Not sure our disaster management agencies and EMS can deal with this "apocalypse" if it happens. What contingency or evacuation plan do we have if this ever happens?
