I am not here to popular. I say things as they are. There was no igbo coup. These were narratives peddled by to cause hate.

I have read many accounts of the war

From the Caged bird sang no more, Phillip Effiong’s account of the war to The Nigerian civil by St. Jorre which is one of the most vivid accounts of the war.

The Igbo coup narrative was intended to peddle hate and which was a sad one.

DONT attempt to weaken this revelation by attaching Rufai’s name like he was the one who said it. BABANGIDA who was part and parcel of the Army and also a beneficiary of the coup said it with his full chest!

Just like clockwork, hundreds of threads created yesterday naming IBB as the one who said it was ignored for the one naming Rufai Oseni. Nairaland, una no dey hide una bigotry again. This one is glaring for the world to see!

Nigerian propaganda doesn't sound sweet unless the Igbos are involved. Thank you, Rufai and IBB, for clarifying the Igbo coup nonsense. A country of stupid people who keep referring to what happened almost 60 years ago as to why it has remained a shithole country.

That is rather insulting that no ibo soldier had the chance to want to grab power. Was it the greed they lacked or the courage.

Good, I'm happy people are saying things how it should be. This is the beginning of the best for Nigeria otherwise there will be nothing for her except misery. You can't insult, accuse and persecute a whole nation with great potential and personality and expect a positive outcome. It is like an ocean, you can only cause a turbulence at a section and it remains calm at the other. It cannot be suppression nor contained else it consume you.

This would only make sense if the major actors where from the north, west and midwest and majority of the victims where from the east, you cant twist bare facts with propaganda.

Before i could beleive this narrative, can we have the name of victim of that coup and also the beneficiary of the coup. Let compare and contrast. Then we can draw our conclusion.
By mere just putting out statement without presenting fact and fugure would not go well with me.

There has never been an ethnic coup in Nigeria

Nigeria's military was too colonised to play along tribal lines in those days

Note this:
Aguiyi Ironsi became the first military head after the Igbo coup which killed two northern Muslims

He was killed in July in a counter coup and the man who emerged after him was a northern Christian who went on to become the longest serving military head of state we had.

He was removed and his replacement was a northern Muslim who barely lasted six months before he was also killed in a countercoup and the beneficiary was a southern Christian.

If you look at the trends of the aftermath of each coup, you'll notice the ultimate beneficiaries are not usually from the ethnic stock of those who carried out the coup

The beneficiaries of coups in Nigeria had nothing to do with names but rather titles. They were usually the highest ranking surviving officers

Of course, that is why Nairaland has not seen peace since Peter Obi lost the last elections.

Even though my assertion above is more an Obidient thing rather than an Ndigbo one.

Well, the coup was planned by Igbo politicians and soldiers, carried out by them (even though few mumu soldiers from other tribes were recruited into it thinking it was a revolution), the victims targeted were soldiers and politicians from other tribes. The people who took power after the coup were Igbo.

Even Nzeogwu, one of those who thought it was a revolution mentioned that the coup was tribalistic.

And in their usual fashion, Igbos gloated, celebrated and made fun of northerners after the coup.

Those are the facts. If you like you can give it any name you like.

Igbos want everyone to believe they are Jewish descendants
They want everyone to believe Nnamdi Kanu is a peaceful man who is only asking for better treatment of Igbos
They want everyone to believe Jonathan was the best president Nigeria ever had.
And they want everyone to believe the 1966 coup was not carried out by Igbos.

Random tribal bigot on nairaland vs IBB who was in the army when the coup happened, wrote a book about it and received over 10 billion naira support from political leaders across the country, an event attended by the current President himself. Who will Nigerians believe?

Lies have expiry dates, this one has expired! Now people wonder how Agbadorians will survive if nobody is buying the lies they peddle

Unlike you, this is not the first time we are hearing narratives about the coup. So the fact that the president attended and they donated plenty money makes whatever he said valid?
If that's how you reason, abeg you no reach to follow me argue.

IBB was a small boy in the army at that time. We have heard accounts from several key players, some of our elders were also eye witnesses.

If you are in doubt who to believe, don't believe the evil genius IBB. He is only trying to redeem his tarnished image.

Re: There Was No Igbo Coup - Rufai Oseni by Image123(m): 9:41am On Feb 22
From IBB's autobiography book

Those who argue that the original intention of the coup plotters was anything but ethnic refer to the fact that the initial purpose of
the plotters was to release Chief Obafemi Awolowo ‘from prison immediately after the coup and make him the executive provisional
president of Nigeria.’ The fact that these ‘Igbo’ officers would do this to a man not known to be a great ‘lover’ of the Igbos may have given
the coup a different ethnic colouration. But, again, I may be wrong here since this view is speculative. I admit that my position here may
be the naive insights of an unsuspecting young officer who viewed events from a distance!

I recall a particular incident that I shall never forget. Some of us young officers had gone out one evening for drinks at a nightclub
near the Ahmadu Bello Stadium. As we settled down to our drinks, we were confronted by passers-by who recognised us. They rained
abuses on us, calling us ‘big fools and cowards’ for not doing what they thought we should do. Articles in newspaper pages were replete
with scorn for us northern officers. Stories made the rounds that even the wives of married officers fought their husbands, calling
them cowards and threatening to withhold conjugal benefits from them! It turned out that the wives of Igbo officers, quite insensitively,
had been taunting the wives of northern officers about what had occurred to officers of northern extraction.

Meanwhile, the rumour mills went into overdrive with conspiracy theories. There were rumours that officers of Igbo extraction were
planning a second coup to kill more northern officers. Unfortunately, in the absence of an official federal government announcement about
the fate of the soldiers killed during the January coup, rumours were rife as to whether they were dead or alive.
There was also a rumoured plan to swap the 1st and 4th Battalions and rotate the military governors of the different regions.
These rumours were amplified by stories of some Igbos gloating over the January killings. Contrary to a promise given after the coup was
quashed that the coup plotters would be tried, none was ever brought to trial, although some were detained. On the contrary, a few of the
coup plotters were promoted. These confirmed rumours that an Igbo domination of national affairs was in the works.
