SKhanmi:
That

-Get Started with Cloud Storage
-Use APIs to Work with Cloud Storage
-Networking Fundamentals on Google Cloud
-Build a Website on Google Cloud
-Set Up an App Dev Environment on GCP
-Deploy Kubernetes Applications onGCP

-Develop Serverless Apps with Firebase

Finally got here. I’ll say networking fundamentals, Deploying Kubernetes application and Firebase are the hardest part of this GCP course. But by the time you go over it again and again, understanding would break through.

Breaking down a monolith app/website into microservices is easy to understand. Configuring and exposing them is not especially with the CLI.

You have to keep tabs on Project ID, Artifact repository, Docker container names, Docker image names and Damn… This definitely not something you’ll use a month to learn.

Still, I learnt how to read the codes and patch them to get the required results in the challenge labs even though I don’t fully understand some aspects. That’s encouraging.

That firebase course contains a lot of codes though, Will just shelve it till my brain cools off.

Finally. Completed the GCP course, submitted my pending assignments and capstone project within days.

AI really helps if you know how to prompt.

I still don’t fully understand the Kubernetes, docker big picture.

But I can manually create & manipulate dockerfiles, package.json and other configuration file using Editors or Vscode and make it run locally using docker desktop or push to registry on cloud.

Learning Linux really helped. Troubleshooting code is another thing. See me tinkering with javascript like I know anything, I got it to work though.

Taking a breather before focusing on Altafrica, Then I continue building on my previous knowledge with Alausa’s youtube videos & start tinkering with ansible, terraform and other tools.

All I need now is to build a portfolio I can showcase and get an internship so I don’t just learn & learn without applying it.

Wondering if I should create another thread for My AltAfrica Cloud Engineering Course progress. We're currently learning the basics of html/css. Just browsed through the available weekly courses. Will do the html assignments within 30mins.

Anyways, back to practicals. Devops & Cloud is huge. I come across foreigners who are senior this and that and they don't even know half of what we africans are asked to learn just to compete, even some of their Job postings are simple. Linux Administration is a full time Job on its own!

We'll be fine though
Re: 2024 My Journey Into Devops & Cloud Computing by SKhanmi: 11:48am On Nov 29, 2024
So i did 8, then 7 then 6. Think it helped me. Running docker on the cloud gave me enough experience to do it locally on my system using VScode & Dockerdesktop. Now all I need to do is understand IaC and learn monitoring/logging which I don't think would be a problem.

Weak point is still Kubernetes in all of this. I can bring it up and manipulate processes but I feel like understanding the underlying process is key. Will set aside a month later to off myself on it.

For docker, understanding how to create a docker file and other configuration packages is key. After downloading docker desktop, I was at loss on how to create a docker image and the in app tutorial skipped some steps. This is where terminal/linux experience came in handy. Knew I needed an editor to create the docker file. Tried to use nano, vim etc and remembered i was on windows.

Downloaded Vscode and it was seamless. It automatically recognize a yaml and dockerfile.

Scenario was to create a multi-service-app and containerize it.
- Broke the app down into sections & Created directories for each service
- Created respective files in each app service directory (order, product, user)
- Built the docker image
- Created a docker container
- Configure and ran the container (ports access, env settings)

In all, I manually created a
- dockerfile
- docker compose .yml,
- node .js file and a package .json file.

The yml and json being the configuration files for the dockerfile and node. js service respectively.

Second image is showing the build process of a docker image. And the location of the build in the docker desktop app

I would be detailing my journey into DevOps/Cloud here.

I mentioned I did a AWS cloud practitioner certification a while back in my previous thread https://www.nairaland.com/6930545/2022-experiment-1-becoming-product

Well, a DevOps and Cloud computing scholarship I applied for a while back came through recently. Talk about keeping your options open.

I know it's a long term thing but I'm enjoying the little I have experienced. Guess that coding I've been running from eventually caught up with me. Gone through css , html , python before to a degree so it shouldn't be a problem. Already learning bash scripting.
Nice to know brother would appreciate it if I could know how old you were cus I'm still trying to figure out what to do with myself and if there's time for me to go this path.

I’m 55 years old, married and first born of my family. At least one of them is true.

Like seriously, you think age is a barrier? The important thing is to pick a goal and stick to it. I’ve seen a 60yrs old man pick up and learn python successfully for his business on this platform. And seen a gen-z give up within months. It all depends on you Brother.

There’s always time.

Thanks for sharing, chief.

Will you encourage someone midway through JavaScript to apply for the Frontend Internship?

Feeling annoyed throughout this week. Phcn did their worst but once bitten twice shy. My laptop powerbank is always charged. Need to buy a bigger one sef.

Back to my source of annoyance, what’s with showing people how to use AI to solve their problems for free and they still want you to help them do it? Youtube is there, google is there. Still feeling lazy? Ask meta ai or chatgpt. The worst ones are those that studied any kind of computer related courses in uni and completely forgotten some things. Ladies especially.

How will you forget how to install a program? My low tolerance to people like that is starting to manifest. Don’t care if they stop talking to me.

If I’m choosing a team, shit like this is what I’ll look for, can you do your own research? Ignorance is not an excuse.

We have the right size you need Sir! Quality not in doubt!

We’ll see how it goes.
Re: 2024 My Journey Into Devops & Cloud Computing by SKhanmi: 8:10pm On Jan 22
Thread check

Still on My AltAfrica Cloud engineering course, Going through html, css and recently JavaScript. No problems. Only new thing I learnt was how to deploy to netlify and vercel, some new tricks in vscode ; didn’t know I could upload directly to my github repo from VScode. Github CLI can go to blazes lol, Think I prefer git bash though. Also like the warp terminal but it’s not available on windows for now.

Also preparing for AWS solutions architect certification. Got info from an insider that things haven’t really changed, most won’t even look at your application if you don’t have the cert upon all your workings . Lol

And seems Google Cloud Certs aren't really worth it in Nigeria, so better aim for that AWS. I like the hoodie they sent me though.

Locked in and keeping my fingers crossed for now. I have a clear laid out path in front of me. Just have to be patient.

This HNG internship is tough! 10k+ joined, less than 3000 scaled Level 0.

I checked the designers project and no amateur would have scaled that. It’s a lot of work and you need to have been exposed or designed something similar to find a template like that.

For the Devops part, Stage 0 was about deploying nginx over an aws ec2 with a custom message.

2 was about creating an API that returns random numbers with fun facts, deploying it over a public accessible endpoint and adding a well detailed github readme. I wan craze, no be backend duty be that.

Used flask and python to develop it, troubleshooting the damn code was the major part.

I wonder how many would get to level 6

Re: 2024 My Journey Into Devops & Cloud Computing by SKhanmi: 5:16pm On Feb 09
As for Alt-Africa. Next 2 weeks is the first semester exams. Did a lot of practical html Css assignments ranging from simple to a full landing page and deployed on vercel. Time to focus on Java script

Re: 2024 My Journey Into Devops & Cloud Computing by SKhanmi: 7:58am On Feb 26
Been a while.

Done with AltSchool Exams, currently on a week break.

Dropped out of HNG at level 3 although my premium subscription will allow me get to level 4/5.

The last task was about deployment design and architecture. Already lost interest and just looked on, the time to complete the task was insane, Used that time to make some dollars on the side. Will copy the projects down and complete it at my own time.

Guess what they dropped at level 4 , Containerizing, deploying and automating a micro service app. Easy to figure out if you’ve done it before. Think I wrote a post about that.

They definitely know what they’re doing.

Best time to get inspiration is when you’re broke. Finally got into an online hustle Ive been looking for. What’s with nigerians and hoarding info? That attitude of pretending to offer help and posting earnings but dm the idiots and they either ignore or try and make money off you on very simple things, For the same course we both paid for and people are sharing updates for free?

All the online hustle courses I’ve taken and succeeded in was made by Igbo men/women. Most yoruba mentors have this stupid mentality of wanting you not to surpass them. Met some on this nairaland. Old men o. They don’t last though or never pass a particular level. If you meet one that doesn’t have that mentality, hold them tight. They are exceptions.

Another ish is abroad people. Funny thing is most times, Nigerians here have more updates than them on ground while they are clueless. Share it with them on a premise of sharing earnings and most would eventually scuttle the arrangements.

Will they make it? Most won’t because they forget, we’re more hungry here. They are comfortable to an extent over there. Motivation levels can never be the same. You Dey jump danfo everyday?

Nigerians will always be the same wherever they are, very few are different. Get paid £200 pounds per month without lifting a finger but no, you want the whole thing to yourself knowing fully well you are lazy/dont have the time. Now you don’t even get up to 50 again on your own. UK people no too dey get sense.

I’m more likely to get help from yaho bois in the UK than the so called educated family members and friends. We applaud honesty in this country but laugh at it indoors.

Omo, enough of my ranting. I’ll just continue avoiding anyone who prefers to oppress their fellow countrymen with some small change than help them get on their feet. …Which is most nigerians… come back and do detty December with money you lots cannot afford.

Anyway for anyone reading my thread. This are online hustle’s I’ve tried and personally cashed out from.

Please don’t DM me. Unless you also have sure updates you want to share with verifiable earnings. I also need money.

Find courses on them and pay for it. I spend money every year to get updates like this.

Amazon KDP
Domaining
Lead generation
Airbnb Arbitrage and Virtual Assistant
Facebook/Telegram group page creation and ads offers
Real estate wholesaling
Streaming Agencies
Online Surveys

Focus on one and it will definitely pay.

By the way Gre.y finance don turn thieves with their cut throat deposit fees. We’ll always find alternatives.
