Nigeria is one of the Countries seen by the USTR as involving in unfair policies facing American exporters. Others are: China, Algeria, Angola, Peru, Brazil, Japan, India, EU, Ecuador and Colombia
The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has faulted Nigeria’s import ban on 25 items, saying the restrictions limit market access for American exporters.

This comes almost a week after President Donald Trump announced sweeping tariffs on goods entering the US, with Nigeria getting 14 percent.

10/10: Nigeria's import ban on 25 different product categories impacts U.S. exporters, particularly in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, beverages, and consumer goods. Restrictions on items like beef, pork, poultry, fruit juices, medicaments, and spirits limit U.S. market access and reduce export opportunities.

These policies create significant trade barriers that lead to lost revenue for U.S. businesses looking to expand in the Nigerian market..

In 2016, the Nigerian government banned 25 items from importation as part of efforts to control imports.

These items include: live or dead Birds including Frozen Poultry, pork, beef, bird eggs, refined vegetable oil excluding refined linseed, castor and olive oil. cane or beet sugar and chemically pure sucrose, in solid form containing added flavouring or colouring matter, cocoa butter, powder and cakes, spaghetti/Noodles, fruit juice in retail packs, waters - including mineral waters and aerated Waters, containing added sugar or sweetening matter or flavoured, ice snow, other non-alcoholic beverages, etc....

The full list of 25 banned items:

On March 26, 2025, the Federal Government said plans are underway to halt the importation of solar panels to promote local manufacturing and help transition Nigeria to off-grid power solutions.

Accusations, counter accusations flying everywhere🧐 countries poking threatening fingers at each other day after day. America too is not helping matters especially Ranting Trump misbehaving like a bad B.itch.

Other countries too including Nigeria should stop being leeches begging for crumbs from America. Also Trade Tariffs between countries should be 50-50.

Nigeria seeks for her economic growth and US should not threaten us with theirs. There are market opportunities in other countries and they should e explore that.

Nonsense. If Nigeria doesn't want your goods, there are many others who wants it. Export your goods where they are needed. Ever since this Trump get to power, he has been behaving like that North Korean leader. Kim Jung Un or what's that his name sef.

In other news, Mr. Terriibu Eleriibu is driving this country into the bottomless pit. After 8 years, Nigeria will be far buried in the soil and will peak among the poorest and non-ambitious countries in the world. I will quote myself 6 years from now, that I'm very sure of.

Infact, I started liking Trump on this tariff war, LET OUR GOVT OPENS BORDER AND REDUCES TARRIF, IT WOULD BE BENEFITS TO "WE" THE MASSES..... Afterall, border closure and higher tarrif haven't done any favour for us but the rich.

NB. How did I gain since govt ban cement importation? Only the Dangote, BUA etc smiling to the banks, while we the masses sweating to buy a bag of cement at rate of 10k for now.

These people are fools. So you mean if America knows what is good for them by slamming higher tariffs on other countries, Nigeria should also not do or implement policies that will help her country locally? This America thinks they can just bully anybody to submission. Nonsense!

Based on the actual experienced wickedness, greed and gross sharp practices of Nigerian farmers, I totally support the lifting of restrictions on all agricultural imports from US and other parts of the world, provided they meet health and safety regulatory standards.

Why will a full chicken be more expensive to buy in Abuja/Lagos than in Edmonton Canada? It's crazy!!!!

Please flood our markets with cheap foods and let Nigerians breathe.

It cannot be an equal competition. Usain Bolt and yourself cannot start a 100m race and you expect to achieve a fair outcome. There is a reason why certain restrictions are necessary. Do you think our agricultural sector can compete with that of America? Our farmers will become jobless overnight if we allow their products in. Even Europe imposes restrictions on certain items from America due to quality concerns. Most agricultural produce from America consists of genetically modified products, which have been linked to obesity and other health issues[1](https://statcarewalkin.com/info/list-of-diseases-caused-by-gmo-foods.html). Europe has informed America that it will not permit certain produce due to unacceptable levels of banned substances[2](https://european-union.europa.eu/priorities-and-actions/actions-topic/agriculture_en)[3](https://agriculture.ec.europa.eu/farming/crop-productions-and-plant-based-products/fruit-and-vegetables_en).

Nigeria should not allow America to exert undue influence. We do not desire the tasteless products they consume over there.

Every problem we encounter still narrows down to the government. They allowed Fulani herdsmen to scare and kill farmers and gold their arms doing nothing. They allowed the cost of farm production and management to skyrocket, forcing the farmers to increase their prices as well.

The US has been known to be quite selfish when it comes to international trade.

I really wish we had the capacity to be self-sufficient in some of these tradable services and commodities so we can logically remove them from imports and still live comfortably.

Unfortunately, one cannot think of any aspect that we can boast of being self-sufficient in; and even the few attempts by the government to attain self-sufficiency has always been hijacked and sabotaged by figures operating under the Nigerian spirit of greed and selfishness.

We need to sit up to these foreign meddlers.

Imagine the US telling us how to operate our markets.

What rubbish!
