you can begin with 850 type or S70.readily available at Alhaji Amusa in ladipo market by daleko mkt. spare parts and mechanics are there loaded with up to date knowledge. i can give you up to ten mechanics and ibo man spare part that would give you reliable and considerable parts and price respectively. Given the fuel consumption, personally i drive volvo 850,which uses 27 to 30ltrs from lagos to kwara on good speed. i have EOD new as at then,that used up to 40ltrs from lagos to ife.u can just imagine. if you drive volvo, you are free from all molestation and embarrassment from police
and all sort. u live a cool life without attracting unnecessary attention to yourself

Well I don't know much about cars but used to own 740 built 1984(can't tell of engine size and all that) of course, that was my first car. Used it for two years, nearly committed suicide with it in 2011 then had to scrap it. now managing Honda CRX from nairaland but missing my Swedish Tank so much . Love my Volvo, just looking for a spare parts dealer

Hello guys, personally I own a volvo v40 estate 1998 model m/t going to two months now since I acquired it nd has really shown to be a good ride. The parts are unbelievably cheap in d market. Imagine a full 16 valve engine going for as low as 40k. The car has got good suspension and smooth handling. What's funny is dat I got a lot of discouraging comments from pple wen I indicated my interest in d volvo brand, every one was yapping about jap vehicles but I stuck my gun after considering wot I find most important I.e availability of parts and maintenance costs which I found to be okay. With regular servicing u can't go wrong with a volvo cos it is as rugged as a merc. The only setback is getting a very good and experienced mech considering that our mechs are archaic and don't attempt to upgrade themselves with latest developments in automobiles rather they attempt trial and error method which most of the time messes up ur car and the try to cover up by convincing u that a particular brand is not good.

Most pple u hear com plain about fuel consumption hardly know what fuel consumption is let alone d dynamic of cars. Most pple who do dis compare a corrolla with a maximum of 1.8l 4cylinder engine with other european cars with 6 or 8 cylinders even if u compare with a 2.4ltr engine it doesnt make sense. They hardly talk abt body size, weight size of wheel and alot other variable that affects fuel consumption. Dont want to mention dat dis "no -no" cars consume less fuel. Those who care to know do know.
now talkin abt Volvo my dad bought a brand new 78 244dl volvo in 1978 ,it was a straight 4 2.4l engine(D size u find on accord EOD of d 2000s) and dat car still traveled long journey's til around 2005 b4 he gave it out. Even if mpg was not an issue in d 80s nd 90s d only car dat had a better mpg in his fleet den was d Citreon Palace. He had a volvo 760 laterwch was a 6cylinder along side a Nissan Laurel wch was also a 6cylinder both were 2.8l cant remembr dre hp but definately wasnt too deiffernt, he prefered his volvo for long journeys cos of better handling nd bettr mpg.
volvos made noise because of d engine power wch is common to all powerful engines..
i wonder if we realy want to fuel our cars, When pple even complain abt mpg of accords.

thre has been some reviews of sme volvo models on this thread. I think D S70 got better reviews. Volvo is a good car, i advice you look thru dis thread and other volvo reviews as well as you local spare part market and mechanics(even tho i bliv they r funny too, but u cld get sme useful info) plus what you get from Biggy505. all these nd more would help you make an objective choice. Volvo Used to be strong, but as the year went by people started looking for fueL efficient and user-friendly cars , people weren't complaining and showing statistics of petrol pump price across opec countries, rather they were innovating and before the European and American Cars could catch up the Japs have gone far. I've noticed Nlanders always complain of jap mobiles . Toyotas and Hondas rule the world . Toyota sell more the GM or FORD in their home market. Is this not because they make good cars?
Volvo are good but our environment don't favour them , so go for what favOurs you environment, unless you are rich. As for me I love TOYOTAS they make the best cars, people. Don't even know toyotas that's why they complain(they make the highest variety of brands you can choose from) check out the Toyota Century and respect them.

If you have a roll over then your chance of survival with none to minimal injury is quite probable, aas it has the best roll over protection in the world. I intend to buy one for my Mum in Warri, thats how much i rate this vehicle also its not too bad off road, ideal for our kind of terrain in the Delta.

Any Volvo mechs in lekki axis?

Some Volvo cars are problem big time especially the recent models from 2005. Many of them have up 15 to 20 different sensors- If it develops problem no roadside mechanic can fix it.

I have to say at this point that I'm one of those 'ghosts' that only come to read and follow threads, but hardly comment. But at this point, I feel prompted to add my own to the myriad of comments I've read here.

I use a 1999 Volvo S80, which I got about the middle of last year (2013). Now, it's in its second year, and my experience with it is just marvellous, I must say. Even those who have a chance to drive it always talk about its beauty and sleekness. I haven't had any major issue with the car, except for the usuals...oil change, servicing, and one shock absorber replacement.

Nonetheless, I understand the reasons why some people here complain about Volvo models. My family is a Volvo family, and I guess I took it after my Dad. We've used the 240 station wagon, which I must say is a little noisy, but a very (emphasis on very) strong car. We've also used a 740 sedan, which is also old but still running. These old models are gas guzzlers, as in, they suck in fuel. But this also depends on your frame of reference. You can't compare these cars with the Asian types which are built mainly to be fuel efficient.

Now back to why I love my Volvo, I chose it because of its aesthetics. I just love the design of my S80, especially with the huge taillights, the menacing rear bumper (which one of my friends refer to as 'ikebe super'), and the 'shoulders' running from the front to the back. It was designed as a luxury vehicle with a comfortable interior. It's spacious, and cute on the inside. It's got a cool sound system too.

Secondly, it's got a powerful 2.9L Inline 6-cylinder engine whose performance is unparalleled when compared with cars of the same era. You can imagine me traveling at speeds close to 140km/hr when my RPM is within the 2000 range. It's also got this kickback feature that gives you this sudden burst of speed that pushes you back in your seat when you activate it. It can get you from 60 to 100km/hr within a few seconds.

Volvo and safety, almost synonymous. Volvo claims to have invented or hold the patent to the 3-point seat belt design, amongst other safety designs. Volvo also was the first to introduce SIPS into its vehicles. You need to see the long list of safety devices and designs that Volvo uses...all in a bid to make safety of its passengers its first concern.

Some people complain about the fuel consumption, but for a 6-cylinder engine, what do you expect. Of which when compared with cars within the same capacity, it still holds its own. I travel between Oshogbo and Awka with about 3/4 full tank, that's a distance of over 400km.

Another issue that people talk about is parts, but there are now parts everywhere. When I'm in the SW, I get my parts from Ibadan or Lagos. In the SE, parts are available in Onitsha.

Noise pollution is a thing of the past, so just forget about that.

The problem of mediocre mechanics is however a major issue. These new set of Volvos have got a 'very' complex electrical system. And God help you if you allow any of these 'thugs' in sheep's clothing to start fiddling with your wiring. There are some intelligent ones among them though, at least, giving them the benefit of doubt.

Well, I guess I've finally succeeded in boring some people. So it's time to stop after a job well done.

Still, I love my Volvo, and would always go for a Volvo, first.

Edit (10/03/2019): Just stumbled across this post from about 5/6 years ago. I still use my Volvo S80 and it's been a good car for almost 6 years now. I should get a newer version of the S80 - a 4.4L V8 in a few weeks.
